I don't really go for that kind of thing anymore. I think no medium should masturbate to itself in the mirror. Rarely does it add to its own movie, just reminds you of one you wish you were watching instead. I prefer literary homage or just playing in the style of a filmmaker rather than just referencing them obliquely, because it requires more talent and doesn't stop the movie in its tracks. An example of this is in Evil Does Not Exist, where during a conversation scene, for about 10 seconds or so Hamaguchi shoots it Ozu POV style and then moves on. It's very identifiable yet subtle and if you're not an Ozufag you don't care. Yet it's impressive how fluidly he weaves in and out of his idol's filming style. I really loved how Marty tipped the cap to The Cock when he did Cape Fear too (and completely mogged all of De Palma's numerous attempts to channel the master on his first attempt).

I was referring to film enthusiasts, of course normalfags prefer the baby movies. KineJun readers voted Cagliostro the number 1 Japanese animated movie ever. Urusei Yatsura 2 also rates way higher than GiTS in terms of Oshii's movies.

Yes and no. The anon making the charts around the world inspired me to rank the films I've seen from each region, but east asia is the only list that reaches 100 so far. This is how the others look

A very constricted view on faith which would be expected from an ultrabeliever like the Popeman. I would put Mean Streets on my own personal list of Catholikinos. It's a great portrait of the layman believer who can't be as good and pure as the aspirational characters the Pope relates to and chose as exemplary models for the world to see.
"You don't make up for your sins in church. You do it in the streets. You do it at home. The rest is bullshit and you know it."
My favourite quote in a movie about the faith. It comes from Harvey's character but Marty delivered it himself in the voiceover. I wish Marty wrote the stories of more of his movies instead of doing so many book adaptations.

I think it's just a classic in general. One of the most real anime / manga out there, from back when producers weren't afraid to try something out of the box in regards to themes and plots. Nowadays, it's all just ridiculously formulaic. It's insane to think that Joe was a success in the 80s with an end like that, and the gritty realism present in the whole show.

I saw it and loved it as a kid too, same with Ponyo and Howl's. I rewatched both last year though and was a little disappointed by them, especially SA given the insane reputation it has as a perennial pick for greatest film ever made. His films from the 80s and 90s mog so hard it isn't even funny, while I personally have fell deeply in love with the Wind Rises the past couple of years.
I rewatched Arrietty around that time though, and that was still as excellent as I remember. Director fell off the face of the Earth afterwards though, making nothing but mediocre derivative crap; which is sad because he has the artistic talent.

I actually only care for Sen to Chihiro nowadays, t b h with you. I've come to realize that Ghibli is a little overrated along normalfags, but I still want to go to their theme park in Japan someday. I honestly think I enjoy most classic western animation more nowadays than Ghibli joints, though Whispers of the Heart is still a major banger / tearjerker.
What I like about Sen to Chihiro is that the atmosphere feels very magical, like literally: it's a very magical film.

>Ghibli is a little overrated along normalfags
What's interesting to me is that I don't think Ghibli is overrated, it's just that the Ghibli normalfags think of when they think of Ghibli is overrated. Ghibli's 00s stuff while being good and very nostalgic for Zoomers are just not essential films the way their impeccable classic run from 1984-97 is. That run has such a diverse array of incredibly well-made, handcrafted, sui generis films that have inspired directors and artists around the world for generations that the vast majority normalfags don't recognize at all. Stuff in the vein of Nausicaa or Laputa had not been made since the early days of surreal trick films courtesy of Melies in the 1900s, and never as thematically or aesthetically fleshed out; while the tragic realism of Only Yesterday and Grave of the Fireflies still have virtually no peers in animation or film. And Whisper of the Heart as you mentioned is just about the best Capraesque film made since he died.

>>the tragic realism of Only Yesterday and Grave of the Fireflies still have virtually no peers in animation or film
They absolutely have antecedents, particularly midcentury Italian films (Fellini particularly) and some 80s Euro filmmakers like Wenders, but those filmmakers usually lack the subtlety that those films nail so well. They tend to venture into the absurd, schocking, or abstract too often as a crutch because they don't think either themselves or the viewer would be interested in watching the film/story, or that they don't really know how to intertwine the magic and realism the way Takahata does in a story like that.
Watching Amarcord and Radio Days and then comparing them to the structurally similar Only Yesterday is a great example of this.
Graves is most comparable to (and likely heavily influenced by) post-Stalin Soviet war films, particularly The Cranes Are Flying, and Ivan's Childhood. However, since I haven't seen any war films take that approach or anything close to it.

>the Disney version is genuinely a work of art.
If it weren't a musical it would be a great film, same could be said for every renaissance Disney movie.

I love Claire too. I think she is really underrated because she is a woman. Not that men underrate her but women do. Same with Catherine Breillat. You know. A lot of women care about "optics" so they think a woman artist shouldn't be provocative. A lot of women hate Fat Girl. Because they think every movie has to be a statement on womanness... Of course it's guys like me and you who have to lift these women directors up because we don't care about "positive representation", just the movies themselves. For me, Claire is "God" alongside Abel, Martin and others.

The old Disney joints were just much more universal because they were based on myths, and that's why they were so rich meaningwise.

I saw the re-release, it was really good to see it on the big screen... It's a shame it became the template for like every Hollywood movie ever released after but that doesn't make it less good. I thought it was very Truffautian.... Most of your childhood favourites are never as good when you watch them as an adult, but Jaws is still good. It's one of the few movies in the "12 year old boy movie" brigade that I wouldn't hold against someone if it was in their top 10 today. But maybe that's just because I love Moby Dick and this is the closest thing, cinematically...
When I watched it I thought about Izzy saying Jéáóúz but I also thought about Rebecca. The scene were The Cock's camera passes over the room while Olivier explains the process of Rebecca's death. And the camera traces her movement in the past... She's not there now but you're so used to the camera following people around you feel like you can almost see her moving. In Jaws there's a shot when the boat is starting to sink. Quint looks spooked at something off camera and it pans over to the life jackets with water dripping on them. And I could see what he saw in that whole famous monologue, memories I never had flowed back to me. It was my favourite shot in the movie... Of course the image is nothing special but I don't really go for the every frame a painting thing. Bobby Bresson talked about ordinary images linked together in a specific way creating extraordinary meaning... avoiding pictoriality as a director. I won't go so far as to say Steven made a Bressonian film, but he is a sensible guy. I respect him. Is he GOD? I don't know, but I respect him.
>>
>>214227445

Watch Room 666 if you're interested in changing that opinion.

What do you think of A.I. Artificial Intelligence? It definitely scratches that gnarly phantasmagorical itch that you speak so highly of... Is it a good film, though? Does it showcase "good" filmmaking? Does that even matter? I don't know. I find it to be interesting, however. As is Jonathan Rosenbaum's headstrong commitment to it.

I had to pause Nymphomaniac merely 4 minutes in to come here and lovingly call Lars a hack fraud. Playing metal over such peaceful imagery is a delightful moment of eye-rollery, you can tell he's in on the joke with you, the viewer, and he's laughing at himself too. Moodysson did it in a melodramatic way and and Micky Haneke did it in a pseudointellectual way but Lars knows he is being cringe when he's being cringe and it makes it based. He's crased.

>>214227475
Yes I think the censorship decapitated the movie in a respect. When they changed it so he didn't murder Rebecca... the whole movie is about Joan Fontaine's life becoming possessed by the spectre of Rebecca, her fate determined by Rebecca, so in the novel when it's revealed he killed Rebecca, the suggestion is that due to the protagonist retracing her steps, she is going to end up being murdered too. Daphne doesn't even have to write the death scene because it's an inescapability, you already know it will happen after the final page... And so she is being haunted by her own future murder in a sense! Another movie Hays Cucked. I like most of Rebecca but if he's a dindu nuffin and they live happily ever after it does lead to nothing at all, yes.

I vill vatch bose of zeez. It's weird, I watched like 12 Spielberg movies as a child and thought of him as God, then completely cut him out after a certain age, so I missed a lot of his famous ones. I've only seen Indy 4, War of the Worlds and The Fabelmans of his 21st century flicks. But I vill vatch zis AI...
