Already sick of the show by ep 4. First couple episodes were pure pre-colonial kino. Just comfy sailing/fishing and savages murdering/pillaging each other with some ceremonial dress and barbarian theology sprinkled in. Literally all I could have wanted in a show about pre-contact indigenous. Then the Whites arrived and the show writers drop the ball hardcore. Turns into a typical “Whitey bad” story but in an enormous way I could have never seen coming in a show which portrayed the Hawaiians in such a nuanced way. Every single White character is irredeemable. They even have a random ugly black guy on the crew just to show how mean and racist the crew is to him. Then the main character goes to Zamboanga and meets a wealthy Hawaiian woman who sailed there and “became civilized” He is constantly chastising her for becoming “like the greedy paleskins” who only care about money and “put children and babies in chains” (actual quote from the show).Episode four culminates in Jason Momoa’s character burning down a slave warehouse after freeing the slaves and helping them kill the slavers. There is a missionary who is portrayed as a meddling BWC interloper whose lusts after Hawaiian women.Really just overall a sad waste of potential. What could have been a proud display of native Hawaiian culture and an nuanced tale of first contact has degenerated into typical “evil Whitey colonizer” slop.
>>214215941If this is true it does suck.
>>214217500OP is true (for once) but doesn't even mention how every guy is wearing a loincloth with half the shots focusing on their bare ass while all the island women are basically wearing burkas.
>>214215941This is every show on apple. This is their agenda. It couldn't have been any other way.
>>214217557What did Hawaiian women wear in real life? I’m guessing they walked around with their tits out.
>>214217865I was doing some post-watch research and apparently Jason Momoa outright stated that his goal for the show is to push an >anti-colonial narrative; telling Hawaiian history through their eyes where Europeans are not “adventurers” or “civilizers” but invaders, exploiters, and opportunistsas if that’s some kind of new an revolutionary portrayal of history? lol that’s basically every colonial-era period piece nowadays.I just don’t see why it wouldn’t be possible to portray the positive qualities from both cultures. Obviously the Hawaiian kingdoms had a lot of admirable/noble qualities and I’m not even asking to see their flaws…I prefer making myths rather than subverting them. Is it really so hard to not portray White people as paradoxically weak-but-bloodthirsty devils without a shred of mercy in their bodies? This kind of tired black and white post-modern view of history is just getting old, I’m actually surprised they’re rehashing it in the current year.
What’s funny about Kaiana’s indignation at seeing slaves in Zambanoga is that Hawaii had its own slave caste.
>>214219449For 10 minutes it looked like Kai'ana is going to just mind his own business in Zamboanga, I would have preferred that
>>214215941You told me the woke was over with Trump in the White House
>>214219845Absolutely. I was getting Conan the Barbarian book vibes…exotic physically superior barbarian gigachad shows up in a decadent civilization, chews the scenery for a bit, murders some dudes who mess with him, then fucks off back to the wilderness…instead we got more Obama-era moralizing. *Yawn*
>>214217865I was confused because Jason Momoa passes the physiognomy check but then wrote his show about brown victimhood…
>>214219338why make this show without Xochitlcoatl?
>>214215941>>homofaggotryhawaiians did indulge in boy man love, they were not brave enough to to commit, so they did the regular faggot queer shit>>surfing on gravelthey took the piss with that one
>>214219924and you believed him?
>>214220050>exotic physically superior barbarian gigachad shows up in a decadent civilization, chews the scenery for a bit, murders some dudes who mess with him, then fucks off back to the wilderness…This would be perfect, the bit about sandalwood for guns could stay
wtf is AI’s problem?
>>214220189>physiognomy checkpseudo-science
>>214222807Nah
>>214219188>portray the positive qualities from both culturesThere isn't much point spending time trying to humanize the aggressors when that's not the store line focus in the first place. It's like how stores about the drunk dad or shitty mom end up focusing on the shitty stuff... Being you can't burn chunks of time on how dad took everyone to a baseball game...If you ever really talk to someone who trauma dumps over an ex or parent they do the same oh it's all bad sort of condensing. It's just story telling... Who cares? It's not like the position of modern power and privilege that comes from being white is going to get up ended due to an apple TV show...
>>214223303It’s poor storytelling. > It's not like the position of modern power and privilege that comes from being white is going to get up ended due to an apple TV show...True, not even a concerted attack from every media corporation for over 20 years was able to do that.
>>214215941alright shill you convinced me to watch it
>>214215941Did you watch SEE?
>>214223787No, I skipped on that one after a teevee anon said that it has a black character who runs a white woman breeding program.
>>214223827I watched all of it and liked it. Wanted to know how this compared. There's nothing good to watch. The last good show was Succession.
>>214223827>black character who runs a white woman breeding program.peak?
>>214215941>Jason Momoa’s character burning down a slave warehouse after freeing the slaves and helping them kill the slavers.lmao does this actually happen? >King Kamehameha I did not abolish the system of slavery in the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi. Although he did not participate in the Western slave trade and employed escaped African and African-American slaves, the Hawaiian Kingdom had a native caste of outcasts, called kauwā, which were part of a rigid social structure. The kauwā class was not officially abolished until 1819, after Kamehameha's death
>>214218989full-dresses became popular with hawaiian women post-colonial contact but yes, before europeans they largely had their big brown titties out for the world to see. God, to be the first white man to land on hawaii.....
