The book is a good read. The real Tommy was far more deranged than in the movie. Goodfellas substantially polishes the characters, who were generally drug addicts and degenerates of the highest order. One of the most popular true crime Mafia books is Murder Machine. But even in that case the director deleted a lot of scenes and altered the story because he said people wanted to see a crime movie, not Wolf Creek. The real life family were like the freaks from a Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie who happened to fall into assloads of money because of heroin trafficking.

Nah, only super honorable down to earth mellow guys joined criminal organizations that gave him complete impunity to do whatever they wanted to anyone else, and were largely involved in extortion and protection rackets.

Mafias are a natural occurrence of any place that allows an underworld. They're just slightly more sophisticated than gangs, but the structures are basically the same all over the world. So yeah, NK does have a thriving black market that is handled sanctioned and tolerated by the government, just as it happens in Venezuela. The government is the biggest mob there.

Now, the "Mafia" in Italy and the US have the particularity of being very much a nationality and family thing. But in some other places they're simply assemblages of loosely related crooks. And many countries have several mafias, some cities have more than a single mafia like structure per city but the codes are similar.

Americans love talking about "The Cartel" like it is this very specific thing. They're just mafias and in some cases their biggest source of income are drugs, but they also run protection rackets, handle prostitution, contraband, gambling and predatory loans and eventually they also have legal investments. They buy out the police and politicians and threaten whoever they can't buy. In some cases the city mafia is connected to a larger national structure or are just what is left after a larger group is dismantled or falls apart.
