What's your favorite Woody Allen movie?
>>
>>214227038
The one he decided not to make
>>
>>214227038
None because they all suck
Parts of Midnight in Paris are somewhat comfy though
>>
>>214227038
I've never felt more robbed of my time than when I took my wife to see Café Society
>>
I love Woody Allen and have seen most of his films. My favorite is Manhattan, but if I'm trying to be impartial, I'd say his best are:
>Crimes and Misdemeanors
>Bullets over Broadway
>The Purple Rose of Cairo
>Husbands and Wives
>Midnight in Paris
And not among his best, but definitely underrated:
>Broadway Danny Rose
>Sweet and Lowdown
>Shadows and Fog
>Deconstructing Harry
>Irrational Man
>Small Time Crooks
The man is America's greatest screenwriter (along with Billy Wilder) and an absolute living legend.

never watched a WA movie, are they good?
>>
>>214227206
Many of them are excellent, but what Orson's saying is true too.
>>
>>214227194

I'm guessing you and I are two of the only people in here who have actually seen most of his movies.

My favorites, in approximate order:

Hannah and Her Sisters
Annie Hall
Crimes and Misdemeanors
The Purple Rose of Cairo
Stardust Memories
Blue Jasmine
Match Point
Husbands and Wives
Bullets Over Broadway
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Midnight In Paris
Everyone Says I Love You

Imo Manhattan is overrated. Melinda and Melinda is underrated. I still liked some of his forgettable 21st century ones: Irrational Man, Cafe Society, Magic in the Moonlight, Cassandra's Dream. His last one, Coup de Chance (in French) was really good actually, best since Blue Jasmine imo. I don't love the "earlier, funny ones" as much as a lot of people, but Love and Death and Sleeper are my favorites of those.

Everyone Says I Love You is very underrated
>>
I like his early funny movies.

Bananas
Take the money and run
Sleeper
>>
>>214228041
Love and Death is the best one

>>214227194
And a sick pedophile.
>>
>>214227038
I'd have to say Annie Hall is my favourite, but I really liked Match Point. Woody should have called it quits with A Rainy Day in New York.
>>
>>214228041
All great comedies, but Love and Death is his funniest
>>214228091
nobody's perfect

The thought of this absolute goblin being with a young aryan princess Mia Farrow makes me feel ill.
>>
>>214228146
It's ok, Frank won
>>
Annie Hall is complete crap.
>>
>>214228146
He fucked Diane Keaton before. I don't know what's his secret but it really works

Annie Hall or Radio Days. That being said, >>214227206 is 100% right.

So is Polanski, but that doesn't make Rosemary's Baby any less of a masterpiece
>>
>>214227194
>>214228041
>>214228088
I like his early broad comedies and his later quirky dramadies, but I think Annie Hall and Manhattan are extremely overrated. In that middle period he was making films that were like scientifically engineered to make the critical intelligentsia coom their pants.
>>
>>214228439
>dude, pregnancy and having kids, is like, bad, go- I mean man
The only thing of value from Rosemary's Baby is the fact that EoE ripped off the poster.
>>
>>214227038
Somewhere between Crimes & Misdemeanours and Sweet & Lowdown.
>>
>>214228563
Annie Hall just makes me laugh a lot man.

Welles last paragraph is spot on and relates to a huge number of comedians. But I disagree that it is a bad thing. Some of the best artists, or at least thoughs I most enjoy, fall into that category.

>"The failure of the country to get behind New York City is - is anti-Semitism."
>"Max, the city is terribly run."
>"But I'm not discussing politics or economics. This is foreskin."
>"You see conspiracies in everything."

I didn't say it doesn't have funny moments, but on the whole it simply insists upon itself.
>>
>>214228788
I wonder if this is what Woody tells himself
>>
>>214228788
That's true of literally everyone regardless of ethnicity. It's so common to hear that a baby has his mother's eyes that it's a cliche.

I love Woody Allen, his movies are comfy, even if same. I don't think I remember any that reaches some top quality though. Some that I remember:

Sleeper (1973)
Magic in the Moonlight (2014)
Midnight in Paris (2011)
You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger (2010)
To Rome with Love (2012)
Small Time Crooks (2000)
The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (2001)

>are we twins.
Maybe.
I stumbled upon Radio Days because I watched picrel, which is a very similar film about a late 20s/early 30s Japanese woman in the 1982 experiencing a midlife crisis and reminiscing about her coming of age in mid-1960s Japan. It led me down a rabbithole of the movies that influenced it, and I found Radio Days and Amarcord to be the two big ones it took direct influence from. I found Amarcord to be too weirdly bitter, but Radio Days scratched the same exact itch.
I particularly got emotional at the part near the beginning where he talks about how much he grew to cherish the gray, overcast Winter days; because it managed to put into words and sights a feeling I've had since I was a kid given I grew up in MN and always loved the overcast days in Winter over the sunny ones. The Radio City Music Hall part also got me, because I'm the same way with movie theaters.
But anyway, if you love Radio Days I highly recommend Only Yesterday. It's a fantastic film that is as good or better.

Fair. Say what you will about Allen, besides the pedo stuff he's a pretty frank and genuine guy. The hilarious and bizarre Epstein letter laid that bare lol.

hannah and her sisters
>>
>>214227194
i can't find crimes and misdemeanors anywhere heard it's great
>>
>>214227375
Manhattan is overrated and i'm a huge simp for NYC. The best part is the beginning then it just becomes mid after that
>>
>>214228114
i agree but coup de chance was surprisingly good. better than scorsese or spielbergs last movies
>>
>>214228288
>>214228613
looks a lot like Mia Farrow's dad (who was a better filmmaker than Woody)
>>
>>214228894
i disagree. i think it lacks pretension because it was edited down to be a love story instead of hte meandering pretentious shit woody initially wanted to do
>>
>>214227038
I watched blue jasmine. while a decent, he's a confirmed pedo groomer. him being jewish was enough for me to drop him.

No question. But I'm only mid-forties so I got a late start. I still haven't seen his "most important" earlier movies. Match Point was tight which shows how versatile he is.
