Interstellar. 3 times.
Evangelion 3.33 is not very popular, and understanding it is out of reach of most normalfags. To really get what's going on with the movie, you need to watch at least the Evangelion TV show (the original TV Broadcast version, specifically for the more overtly intimate translation of the dialogue in the scenes between Shinji and Kaworu, instead of the platonic angle in the Netflix re-release - fuck gay erasure). You also probably need to watch End of Evangelion, then Evangelion 1.11 and Evangelion 2.22. Ideally, you'd also understand the subtext/historical significance of Beethoven's 9th symphony and it's association with Kaworu, and what Kaworu represents as an allegory for certain historical realities. This is in addition to some familiarity with what Evangelion is doing on an occult/mythic level. If you've achieved all of this, and you watch Evangelion 3.33, you will see it is a movie that simply does not want to exist. The creator of the movie did not want to make it, the characters in the movie do not want to be there...It even tries for the first 40 minutes or so to be an entirely different movie. It spends the rest of its runtime shakily going through the motions of what it's recreating with borderline coherence, pulls the final trigger while turning away and shutting its eyes - so to speak, doing no justice to what it's re-creating, and when its over it just regrets itself. This isn't the saddest movie I know of, but it's one of my favorites. Because it's a very raw and very public expression of a personal grief, which managed to be made at a time in its industry where this sort of thing would never happen otherwise from any other studio and at that scale. Needless to say, there is also nothing like it from the west. Maybe some Eastern European gay films, but I doubt any of those have such intense world-rending pretense.
