A bunch of near-future dystopias thought up in the 70s to mid 90s(?) were discussing far flung theoretical futures that are plain mundane or near real at this time. It'll be the same with full on sci-fi in a hundred or so years, they'll be quaint "oh how neat" kinds or movies when energy weapons and warp drives are real, or on the cusp of being real.
