You really can just put whatever boring cheap pseud crap you want out there and as long as it's Japanese people will pretend it's incredible and elevated brilliance
>>
it's universally agreed that The Ring > Ringu.
>>
>>214255112
And both dramatically beat the insanely convoluted nonsense that the source material is

Sonatine is great.
>>214255112
This.
>>
>>214255051
The 90s were a great decade for film making and especially foreign films as lots of markets that were previously closed to the West opened up. For example, few people knew about Jackie Chan and Jet Li in the 80s but they literally made it to Hollywood in the 90s.
>>
>>214255147
What do you like about it? The thirty second shots where characters are sitting down and not saying or doing anything? The long tracking shots of cars just driving normally? The big finale that's literally just someone flipping a light switch in a hotel room with occasional reaction shots of people falling down?
Oh let me guess. "The atmosphere."
>>
Lol did you watch this in roncesvalles too?

I thought it was great, I didn’t think I’d like the slice of life humour in my mob thriller but it worked beautifully those were the best parts
>>
>>214255051
shut up, zoomer, pay attention to the movie instead of watching tiktoks next time
>>
>>214255335
A friend of mine suggested it and we just threw it on, he might have heard of it from some YouTube channel or something, not sure
The bits of humor were great and I actually did laugh a bit and get interested in the characters, but I was just nagged by the feeling of "Where's this going?" the entire time. There was no flow to the movie whatsoever, every scene was just meandering to the next and eventually the movie ended
>>
>>214255424
NTA but the atmosphere is half the point of the movie. You need to stop watching movies for the plot like a pleb. Watch movies for the emotions they reveal and the skill with which the director has executed his vision. I'm sure on your re-watch of Sonatine, when you're not expecting something to happen that doesn't, you'll be able to appreciate it more.

>>
For me, it's YO YO GIRL COP.
>>
>>214255530
I don't mind slow movies whatsoever, The Shining is my favorite movie and almost nothing happens in it. I just didn't feel that core to Sonatine that makes it compelling. I do think you're right that if I rewatched it I'd be more into it, but I don't see myself doig that because there aren't any great performances or memorable moments I'd be eager to see again.
I think the subject matter as I interpreted it, a gangster who's afraid to die, takes no joy in his work, and feels there's no way out, is interesting. I just don't think they did anything with it.
>>
>>214255424
sonatine is not his most accessible movie to start with. you should start with violent cop.

Added to my list, I do like challenging movies I just find that very often people hail absolute crap just because it's obtuse (Saw this a lot with Bring Her Back earlier this year)

try something like Kids Return. it's similar in philosophy but there's more plot there

takeshi kitano is what i call the quintessential boomer artist

tough guy image, sneers at intelligentsia, sneers at theory, knows whats beautiful because it just is, and shoots it, cuts it, releases it and moves on to the next project. Whether or not his audience is huge or small or global or local doesn't matter worth a shit to him. Many old guys are like this
>>
>>214255051
Replace Japanese with foreign and you'd be correct. As long as its not American, it'll be overpraised to death.

Fucking love Sonatine. Such a great movie. It's one of my fave hang-out movies. I love movies where gangsters hang out and goof off and let their guard down. "Exiled" by Johnnie To is another great one...

Oh and Hisaishi did his best work when he was working with Kitano, not Ghibli. No contest.
>>214256362
Scene at the Sea is amazing also.
>>214257093
This makes no sense. His age has nothing to do with it.

>there aren't any great performances or memorable moments I'd be eager to see again.
You don't want to see the beach scenes again? Those aside, I actually enjoyed every actor's performance in Sonatine. Kitano has them all act real, with many details, and subtly revealing their inner emotional lives.
>>
>>214256362
Great ranking. Kikujiro is such a wacky but powerful movie.
>>
>sonatine
>psued crap
>no flow
The film is a death march, the flow is pretty easy to follow. A lot of what you liked is the living throwing their own wake.
It's also shot in a really fun way, in contrast to a lot of Japanese stuff in the 90's where even the really skilled indie guys shoot really dour films, which is a neat contrast for a movie that's about the fear of death.

Kikujiro was one of my favorites, it was touching. There was no happy ending for the kid but at the same time there was. Upbeat 'walkin around japan' type movie.
>>
>>214256362
A scene at The Sea is underrated.
Kikujiro's first third of the film is bad. It only comes together as a travelogue when they begin meeting up with the various societal misfits.

I've been in this thread but I also want to post another movie that makes me thought Japanese were untouchable in artistry

Seriously, this movie haunts me. I don't know another movie that explored a woman's private world quite as well. Not even from the same director, and he's put out a lot of fucking movies since this one
>>
>>214255051
Mainly because it's the only viable alternative culture to western that isn't a pile of third world rubbish
>>
>>214258212
>makes me thought Japanese were untouchable in artistry
That's a bit of an exaggeration. In the making of movies, I can understand believing that, but in poetry, painting, music, drama, sculpture? Not at all, as great as their culture's achievements are in these artforms.

Sonatine is kino. And I think Hanabi is even better.

These movies are made for people who feel, people who know stuffs not right in their lives. It's about finding those tiny shots of serenity in a life of stress and anxiety. You will get it once shit hits the fan for you.

Rewatching Mad Men. Don has a great line at the end of season 3 that you reminded me of.

Goddamn right. Shame he fell out with Kitano back in the 2000s.
