This is Nolan's best movie. Everything else is slop.
>>
>>214261953
The reverse twist that there are no clones and the movie follows the three parts of a magic trick is definitely what elevates it, reminds me a bit of Shutter Island
>>
>>214261953
This movie is insane disclosure, Elvis switched places with his twin, that’s what his song Blackstar is about, thats why David Bowie’s last album was called Blackstar, he also faked his death, and JFK Jr also had a secret twin, the Gemini twins, “Gemini Man”, Trump
>>
>>214261972
Huh? There were definitely clones.
>>
>>214262197
NTA. The clones are always part of the false narratives. The clones in the tanks are only implied through the editing.
Jackman wanted to pin the murder of Root by luring Bale in by misdirection through putting doubt in Caine.

If the clones aren’t real, why would Jackman’s character be adamant to his dying breath that they are?

Every time i watch nolan slop i have to pinch myself. This is the very same guy who made The Prestige. Unbelievable. Same with the guy who made Event Horizon. And then every follow up was completely braindead slop cinema. Looks like these people have only one good film in them.

Why would he give the trick away to the indifferent Bale twin? The point being that the Bale that kills Jackman already is indifferent to the trick. It was the other Bale - the one that got ensnared in the scheme that let his curiosity drive him. That was the brother that was raging about Jackmans last disappearing man.
>>
The prestige is his best slop. Insomnia is his best movie because he didn't write it.
>>
>>214261953
Ultimate redpill on the movie
>All the Tesla scenes never happened, they were a fabrication in Angier's diary trying to convince Borden that his machine was real
>Angier had a twin too, one of whom died in the crate when Borden slipped backstage
>All the other "clones" were wax figures meant to convince Borden the machine was real
>>
>>214262961
Agreed. Insomnia doesn't feel like dumb Nolan slop. It also looks great because it's actually filmed in Alaska.

It's the same as the rest of Nolan's movies, action flicks masquerading as intellectual films, which fall apart as soon as you start thinking about them.
>The fire rises
>>
>>214261953
Angier won, borden revealed his trick but jackman never did.
>>
>>214263041
>clones in plural
there’s only one wax doll. all other are alluded to through editing.
question is through - since Jackman is shown to have started to try to have his face under water for a length of time after his wife dies - is he the one in the tank with Root (his double) taking the bow?
>>
>>214262341
>NTA. The clones are always part of the false narratives.
no, they're real
>>
>>214263110
>action flicks masquerading as intellectual films,
You're a midwit who overrates his own intelligence.
>>
>>214263200
prove it
>>
>>214263211
It's always the same with Nolan threads. Some retard who wants to prove he's smarter than Nolan making smug statements.
>>
>>214263241
The movie shows the machine creating them and jackman killing them time and time again. that's the whole point of the story. the length he was willing to go compared to bale
>>
>>214263270
you’re missing the central point that jackmans whole diary (which the clone scenes are from) is part of the false narrative he has created in order to lure bale in order to ensnare him. The whole elaborate procedure with the tanks and blind workers were all part of the length Jackman was willing to go.
all clones “shown” underneath the boardwalks are never there - they are only implied through the misdirection of the editing.
>>
>>214263265
Well come on then. If we're too stupid to get it, explain the depth's of Nolan's genius. Shouldn't be too hard, right?
>>
>>214261953
>Everything else is slop.
you might want to add Memento in the exceptions
>>
>>214263384
We are shown the machine being real after the diary portion of the film is over.
>>
>>214263384
wtf are you talking about? there's no misdirection of the editing. the machine is real. it replicates whatever is placed in it. jackman chooses to use it to get the prestige he otherwise wouldn't get. and he was willing to keep killing other people (copies of himself) for it
>>
If the machine is real then what did he not have a harem of Scarlett Johanssons?
>>
>>214263390
NTA. The writer to the novel which Nolan based his version of the prestige said it was genius. Nolan has expressed creative genius in many different ways through his oeuvre - but in the prestige one could say the film is written and made in an extraordinary way which it makes one question the causality of actions depicted in a myriad of ways depending on what one infers.
>>
>>214263457
>>214263524
we are only shown an actual physical machine when he has “come back from Tesla” yet we are never shown it work in London. Only from when he is visiting Tesla (which is just part of a retelling of his “diary”)
>>
>>214263563
We are shown it working, in the final confrontation with the surviving twin. Borden and Angier talks about the lengths they've gone to for their art, and the film shows us through flashbacks. Borden never says he had his twin cut off 2 fingers to mirror the injury from the gun shot, yet there it is on screen. And equally, Angier never says he shot a clone the first time he used the machine, yet there it is on screen.

So yes, we are shown it working.
>>
>>214263563
we are should pretty explicitly that the machine clones what's on it, the mass murder being the nefarious length jackman was willing to go (the whole point of the story) yet you're going out of your way to pretend that it doesn't

The very book the movie is based on established the machine as working like it does in the movie

just accept it and move on instead of living in denial about a very simple plot
>>
>>214263642
Angier says he also has made sacrifices - then it cuts to him shooting a clone - which is a part of the whole diary narrative. no clone is ever shown in london. there is just one body in the tanks.
>>214263659
Then why would the author of the book find Nolan’s rewriting genius? That’s a false equivalency to crave that both book and film has to have the same logic.
>>
>>214261953
Following and Memento aren't slop
>>
>>214263800
So Angier, while dying and never speaking a word of it, remembers a false memory? For what purpose, to trick himself?
>>
>>214261953
For the most part, yeah. His set design budget is enormous and people credit that to Nolan’s vision or whatever, but his scripts are notoriously weak and full of plot holes and his third act is usually underwhelming, Nolan just covers it up with explosions or time manipulation that needs a flashback to make sense. He’s a total hack, but he cooked with the Prestige. It had the right amount of star power before they were famous, and foggy, Elizabethan wonder that hadn’t been seen since.
>>
>>214262417
This is the trick, the devotion to his art
>>
>>214263830
he doesn’t “remember” it. We are shown it as a callback to the false narrative. The magic trick the film itself executes is gradually cross-cutting false and true narrative with seductive editing in order to imply that the ordinary (the box) makes something extraordinary.
>>
>>214263857
>Elizabethan
Victorian
>>
>>214263874
Oh Jesus the cope....
Was the flashback to Borden's memories that happens like 20 seconds before Angier's also just a "call back to a false narrative"?
It should also be noted that the body the camera shows us at the end in the tank wouldn't be the first tank that Borden would be looking at, and the shot clearly shows something of the same shapes and sizes in every other tank. Just because the camera doesn't do an extended travel to show every single body doesn't mean there aren't bodies in the other tanks.
Perhaps the film is lying about the Borden twin that was hanged too, maybe he never went to prison at all, or were convicted. The short trial we see, that was just a magic trick too right? After all, the film is outright lying about everything right? Hell, whose to say Borden or Angier ever existed at all, perhaps they were just figments of imagination of Angier's wife as she was drowning, maybe the entire film is her getting revenge on them from the after life.....

no it doesn’t show the outline of others in the tanks. They are shown to be empty except the one closes to the camera. There is a cut to the pile of top hats - making us infer the bodies in the tanks after the fact. No Jackmen in plural are shown in london at all.
>>
>>214264009
Are you fucking blind? Go watch the end again, right before it shows the tank with one of the clones up close, you can clearly see body shapes in every other tank.
>>
>>214262961
Insomnia is just a shitty adaption of a much better Scandinavian flick.
>>
>>214264009
I guess you ran away, but another nail in the coffin is that the entire film spends time setting up the 'birds in cages' metaphor which finally shows it's inevitable conclusion here at the very end, with a single broken bird alive and every other one dead in their cages, or for the story telling illiterate, water tanks with dead clone bodies.
And in spite of how on the goddamn on the nose it is, that magicians breeds birds to be killed for their acts mirroring Angier making clones to kill for his act, that still gets missed by the likes of you.

Even in that picture, you can clearly see the outline of one body in one of the tanks. Go forwards 1-2 seconds and you can see the same outline in every other tank.

the clones are real. this movie brings out all the pseuds. the clones are real in the book the movie is based on.
>>
One of the more interesting thing about nolan films is that they often strive for an ambiguity created by stylistic filming choices. Whether it's leo squeezing his face through an alley in mombassa and running into his japanese benefactor, yet the audience taking it 100% as reality, because they arent told it's a dream and it manages to feel like reality through choices in filming and pacing, despite being, on the page 100% a dream sequence.

This makes the film easy to digest for niggercattle, and creates depth to enjoy for midwits who can perceive the ambiguity and argue over what it means.

In the book you only have a single (unreliable) journal, but the movie takes things further by having back and forth unreliable journals.

The chinese magician story and the tesla machine story are very similar. Like the spinning top, it's a good if a bit cheap trick of ambiguity.

Literal contrarian retardation. The whole point of the film is devotion to the art and how far you're willing to go. What's so special about fabricating a diary and a legend? Jackman's whole deal is that every time he performs the trick he risks being the one chucked into the tank and drowning, all so that he can revenge himself upon Bale. How the fuck would that go over your head and prompt you to seek double meanings?
>>
>>214272689
Is it feasible that he first of all had a cloning device - which enabled him to make hundreds of clones of himself that he could kill? Do we as an audience find it to be murder when just killing a copy you made of yourself?

Or could it be actual much harder idea to swallow: that the sympathetic jackman actually killed root? That the idea of the cloning machine itself was the magic trick.

There is Jackman and there is his drunk double Root. That is it. Amazing that people here will get twisted and upset for not understanding this. What the fuck did you think Michael Caine's opening monologue was about?
>>
>>214273873
Andy Serkis deposited a bunch of hats in the woods nearby the path that Bale would be entering from. He thinks he notices them without anybody seeing him, but its still a ruse to get him to believe in the trick.

It's important to remember Bale is the protagonist and we see the story unfold from him and his brother's perspective. It doesn't mean Jackman isn't playing tricks (no pun intended ha)
>>
>>214273589
We literally see him do the trick with Root before he adds in all the sci fi flavour. The only reason they struggle to repeat it at all is because Root is a dumb drunk, which is why Jackman kills him to get Bale imprisoned. They don't do the disappearing man trick again after that.

>>214272689
This is backward reasoning. You have an impression of what the movie is about, then you use that to argue what the meaning of certain happenings is. The relation should be reversed. First you look at what happens in the movie and then yoh derive meaning from it.

Not that it matters, because in either way the movie would support the meaning you're suggesting. How is creating a fake story and diary, killing one man and framing another, not about a magician going the next obsessive step of escalation?
>>
you know, in the book the machine actually worked. I wasnt a cloning machine, but it would create a new body, and then transport the spirit to the other body. This meant that a fully spiritless body was left behind.

When Angier uses it (I'll use their movie names), Borden turns of the power in the middle of the trick. As a result Angier's spirit is split in two. He's both a lumbering zombie-like body prone to disease, and an ephemeral spirit with not quite a full body.

Because the machine works in the book, you know the machine works in the movie

Yup, they're real. Tesla's experiments with electricity proved that teleportation and time travel are real and possible. This was known until the (((relativists))) captured and subverted electricity research to replace the ether concept with subatomic particles. Look up Eric Dollard on yt if you want to know more about Tesla and his experiments.
