7/10 album, not perfect but it’s the only interesting thing they’ve released since Death Magnetic.

Cheat on Me, Frustration, and Dragon are great songs.

Metallica is (Was) a really good band precisely because of the range.
The had good songs that pulled from every genre and ethos imaginable. They were just flatly good at music.
Compare that to other, shittier bands. A friend of mine used to be really into Megadeth, when I was a kid. Every single fucking song sounds the same. They had one hit, and then they started to just produce variants ad nauseum forever.
You can read the personality of a band based on what they have the courage to make and experiment with. Whether you like Metallica or not, they proved themselves and they had the balls to get out of their comfort zone. The vast, VAST majority of bands can't do that. They don't have the courage OR the skill.
>>

Their (Re)Load look was the best of their entire run.
>>
>>214266627
Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and And Justice For All are brutal yet gentle, kind yet cruel, vicious yet elegant, and chaotic yet tight and controlled. There was no regard for pandering to the mainstream radio and MTV crowd, so songs were as long as they felt the songs had to be to tell the story. That allowed them to simply be themselves.

Then they decided that they wanted the money of normies, so songs are shorter for MTV play, and overall everything's softer so normies can more easily digest it.

Things changed eventually. I never really liked Metallica the same after Saint Anger. Saint Anger kind of sucked, but there were some decent songs. And then they never made anything worthwhile ever again.
I think they got mind-broken by commercialism when they got all cunty about the Napster situation. That was probably the exact moment they went from good to shit. Because that happened in 2000, between Reload and Saint Anger. Then Saint Anger was garbage, and then they never made anything good again.
Shit was over. It's obvious that corporate bullshit lobotomized them.

I am tired of people saying "Kill 'em All" was their best album. It's not even a Metallica album. It's a "monkey see monkey do" album. A band of always-drunk young people heard Venom, Motorhead, Diamond Head, and others, like it, and copied it. There's absolutely nothing on that album that's "Metallica." We don't get that until "Ride the Lightning."

They sold out at the very beginning. They didn't play the shitholes like CBGB. They played the hair-rock clubs like Rainbow Bar and Grill. They didn't want to tour with other thrash bands. They toured with Van Halen, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Dokken, Guns N Roses, Queensryche, etc., and if other thrash bands were also on the bill it was not by Metallica's doing in any way. From the very beginning they didn't want the thrash crowd, and wanted the hair-rocker crowd.
>>
>>214266933

There's a real love/hate relationship with that album. Yeah there's a lot fog reat songs on it, but the audio quality really is absolute shit. Well really all of them had bad audio quality up until the black album, but that one was so much worse.

>>
>>214267125
Even without One it’s still in their top 3.

Blackened is the best opener on any album, Title track is great, Harvester of Sorrow is great on the album and was one of their best live songs at the band’s peak, To Live is to Die is great, Dyer’s Eve is way better than Damage Inc.
>>
>>214267236
That whole album would probably be considered their best if it had the audio quality of the black album.

You're right re. Justice, but it was the 3rd of a string of like albums. All of the Rasmussen albums have the same layout:
fast opening track,
overlong, epic title track,
filler,
some instrumental,
b-tier fast song to start side 2,
then the cliche power ballad,
more filler,
kinda fast-ish side 2 closer.

By the 3rd iteration of this, it was getting tiresome. But agree re. the audio mix quality.

Same goes for Jason. I remember the narrative being for awhile that Jason's creativity was being strangled and he had the best metal riffs hidden away. Years later he's still yet to make something good after leat Metallica.
>>
>>214266483
>>
>>214266353
They're only okay, which is the entire problem. After "the black album," it's as if they collectively decided "okay, let's just murder everything we're known for and lean heavily into radio hits, WE MADE IT BOYS." It wasn't about how they cut their fucking hair. They literally lost every shred of energy that made Metallica, "~Metallica~."

And they know it, because they've been trying desperately to find it again ever since.
>>
>>214268905
The absolute basics to understand about the music business: Songwriting contribution = songwriting credit = song ownership = $$$ royalties.

This is what killed Pink Floyd when Roger Waters was getting a bigger paycheck than everyone else. Sharon Osbourne infamously stole Jake E Lee's writing credit to keep his ownership in the songs to a minimum, and she probably did it with Randy and Zack too.

James and Lars keep everyone else's contributions to a minimum because of it. James even writes most of Kirk's leads. I remember years ago reading an interview where James said he went to Jason's apartment who in turn showed James some riffs that would become the rhythm section of the title track for AJFA. But Jason has no credit on that song. Jason's prog style is all over AJFA which is why the song-note structures are notiably more prog than the previous albums, but he barely has any songwriting credits on that abum; mainly B-sides. Then I saw an interview where James dismisses Jason as a root-tower, and had to ahve Bob Rock explain to Jason how to play a bass besides towing James's root notes. Honestly that's a big "fuck you" to Jason after they already did to take a shit on him for over a decade.

And when Jason does side projects where he can actually get credit for his work, Lars goes off with "HE LEFT THE BAND AFTER WE TOLD HIM THAT HE WASN'T WELCOME BACK! WE DIDN'T FIRE HIM AND JUST TOLD HIM THAT HE'S NOT WELCOME AROUND US FOR CHEATING ON US WITH A SIDE PROJECT, SO IT'S HIS FAULT HE'S OUT!

I saw them live, was thoroughly unimpressed. Granted, I'd never heard their music before and was only aware of their--what's the word--aura?, saw they were in town that night & had nothing to do so I went. I thought they were some gothic-like band so I expected gothic-y, almost doom metal music, but it was surprisingly fast & sounded like ass, mixing wise.

>It wasn't about how they cut their fucking hair.
It was, though. Not that the hair was ever a strict metal requirement (e.g. Kerry King, later Phil Anselmo, the Anthrax jew). But when the entire band cut their hair at the same time as a major stylistic shift in an era of MTV owned by Alternative music, it was a pretty obvious and blatant symbolic statement about cutting ties with the past. Seeing that first "Load" video was demoralizing to the schoolyard metalheads who were still pining after Cliff Burton ffs.
>>
>>214270209
If you were still pining after Burton 8 years later, serves you right. lmao, imagine him with short hair.

>>214266897
Kill'em All was the birth of thrash metal, they didn't copy anyone as their sound was unique, but they were definitely inspired by early new wave british heavy metal. The quality was rough, their sound was fast and yet still simple and that's why it's my favorite, it hits all the marks that I like. It's also why I prefer Peace Sells over the clean and over produced Rust in Peace. It's all preferences at the end of the day.
>>214267108
That isn't true and you know that. They left LA for San Francisco as LA was a hotbed for hair metal fans. They even joked that glam in glam rock stood for "gay LA metal".
>>
>>214269534
>sounded like ass, mixing wise.
I've never played music in a real club, so I'd be very curious to know how the conversation works between the band and the resident sound guy. But I am always inclined the blame the sound guy, who knows the venue and its acoustics and the sound system. I have been to concerts at nationally top-rated venues where you could barely even tell which song the band was playing because the general rule seems to be:
>if it's rock music, turn it up until people's ears bleed
The same venues were much better for jazz/blues inspired bands. But if it's heavy rock (including metal), the attitude seems to be that the audience isn't getting its money's worth unless their senses are being assault to the point that you get a headache and can't hear properly for hours after. Inb4 wear earpro, that's cope, there is no reason why a concert goer should have to do that, UNLESS perhaps you're up front in a true arena/stadium environment. It's insulting to take these great songs and reduce them to pure static noise.

new science fiction film:
anon has a tv that can tune in to any channel at any time in the past. the anon buys a load of hoarded tv guides and spends his days going through them to find out when a lost episode was shown, then tunes his dial back to that time, and is able to watch it.

I miss the glam aesthetic in some ways as it immediately tells the audience "Welcome to the show where our characters will perform" it immediately signals that you're getting an energetic performance, I have to give slight kudos to slipknot and GWAR for someone preserving that

Purists will never admit it, but Death Magnetic was good.

>>214271564
James and Lars are just yin and yang which is where a lot of the band's success comes from, the push and pull between their very large personalities. but at this point James was dealing with alcoholism and kind of checked out in a way so Lars basically took over the band and James was too tired to argue. and Lars is a very pretentious person who cares a great deal about what other people think of him, he was tired of Metallica being seen as this big dumb loud beer chugging band and wanted to be taken seriously as an artist, which to him meant dressing like a fag and wearing mascara and pretending like he "got" art. he's really the picture perfect example of a midwit who doesn't know he's a midwit and thinks he's smart, while James is the opposite.
>>
>>214266627
I used to really like the first 4 or 5 megadeth albums, there was not much repetition in a lot of their songs
>>
>>214271559
>Whereas Kirk Hammett just looks like he practices his finger dexterity by knitting AIDS quilts.
he and Lars legitimately look like they're trying to work out their closeted bisexuality in a socially acceptable way and have no other outlet for it except for Metallica.

i think he's necessary to the sauce that makes Metallica click. it's that push/pull between him being a pretentious retard and James being a much more average guy that makes it work.

can't really speak to Kirk or why he went all in on this stuff, i guess because Lars was agreeing with him a lot when he went in on this stuff so he felt like it was finally a way for him to have more input on an album with James checked out and Jason still resigned to the bassist who gets all of his bass parts tuned out of the final mixes of every albums.

I was never into it as a kid, but I must admit that I am actually enjoying Peacemaker because it's exposed me to some new (to me) bands of that type.

Since we're talking how bands and "style changes", how many of today's kids rocking out to 90s Pantera knew that they were a full-on homo band in the 80s? That Dimebag was originally known as "Diamond Darrel"?

Maybe we'd be more sympathetic to Metallica and Pantera, if we ourselves had the same experience, of being approached by a jewish record label executive who explains that you need to reinvent yourself to be more profitable. (I mean heck, Spinal Tap was originally a skiffle band, right?)

there’s a cool little interview where Jason talks about showing James the Blackened riff. havent heard the interview where James shits on his playing, but I dont doubt it. James also mentions in the somewhat recent interview where they talk about his departure that Jason would follow his playing all the time even though he didnt have to, which is bullshit cause he wasnt really allowed to choose what he was playing. James says as much in the Behind the music docu. anyway, its a shame James and Jason couldnt get a real partnership going cause they were going hard af live.

There was an interview on Blabbermouth a month or so ago where Rex (bassist) completely disowned the band's entire past, and argued that Pantera didn't start until Cowboys From Hell. It was a slapback at the singer who came before Phil reminiscing about the old days, which Rex didn't like. Rex's easily-hurt pride was on full display there.
>>
>>214272013
all they ever do is deny their past, like Phil cucking and apologizing for using the confederate flag in all their old promotional stuff and pretending like it wasn't core to their identity at all (Darrel literally had confederate flag guitars and their whole thing was dirty southern boy groove metal)
>>
>>214271909
Based. Too many metal fans think more drmming equals better drumming. Black Sabbath and Metallica both have "bad" drummers (by metal standards) yet are the biggest and best metal bands of all time.
>>
>>214272184
a real bad drummer makes everything sound the same like Dio's shitty drummer, Bill Ward left Black Sabbath after Heaven and Hell so Dio's drummer took over for Mob Rules and every fucking song sounds exactly the same, like all of Dio's solo stuff, every song sounds like some Holy Diver knockoff
>>
>>214272048
>its a shame James and Jason couldnt get a real partnership going cause they were going hard af live.
Way back in 2000 I was at the Summer Sanitarium tour, the Columbus, OH venue, and James couldn't be there because he injuried himself that morning, on a jet ski or something, so Jason took over as vocalist and overall leading their set (I think a guy from System of a Down played guitar), and I loved how hard he sang their songs and interacted with the crowd.
>>
>>214272048
James never shat on Jason's playing (other than implicitly with the AJFA mix) he shat on his songwriting contributions, which he felt were pretty slight especially later on
>>

Like Scott Ian getting evasive about his SOD past. People need to own up to both the good and bad partys of their past because it makes them look like moral cowards when they don't. Dave Msutaine did with freely admitting that he was a mean drunk.

And also Nu-Pantera isn't Pantera until they produce a new album that holds up to what the Abbott brothers did. They're just a tribute band in the mean time.

>>214273294
Metallica never really gave a shit about their bass players after Cliff. They always just considered them a touring member. Jason wasn't even allowed to contribute to any of the songwriting
>>
>>214273262
In case you forgot they fucking killed Cliff's bass in the mix just like they did with Jason. They let very little of it through. James loved using that "scooped out" thrash guitar setting on his amps (bass and tone to 10, and midrange at zero), and it sounds great if you're a guitarist, but it absolutely suffocates the bass player in the mix. That's the reason why you can't hear the bass at all on those 80s thrash metal albums unless the guitarist was cutting out for a part. It wasn't until the Black album when Bob Rock taught James how to set his amps to let the bass come through while still being fat and heavy.
>>
>>214273294
Jason wanted to be a positive contributor, and he was. He just got very little credit for it as James and Lars routinely went "Sharon Osbourne" on him. And I think that after AJFA gave him very little credit for that album where his prog fingerprint is all over it, I think he dialed back while knowing his place.

>>214273340
They were that way while Cliff was alive. The purpose of their live bass solos is to give James and Lars a few minutes to cool off, take a piss, and whatever. It's basically "you keep the crowd entertained while we bail for a few."
>>
All things considered, Jason won.

This, honestly. My parents were 19 and 20 when they had me, and I had three of my grandparents until I was 39, with two still being alive now when I'm almost 42. Also had three great-grandparents until my teen years with the last one dying when I was 18. Unfortunately, my one great-great-grandmother never got to meet me, since she died shortly after I was born, but at least I had one.

Nowadays with people having kids in their 40s, they'll be lucky to know their grandparents at all.

Interesting sidenote (to me), I was watching the new "Terminal List" season and noticed some Metallica in the soundtrack. Compare also, that "Triple Frontier" movie. Which might have been for the best.

Did they really think showing the mundanity of struggling in the studio, debating over scheduling for therapy, and bickering over shit songs would rehabilitate their image?

The problem isn't that Lars is a shitty drummer. It's that he used to be a good drummer who never honed his skills and let them atrophy with album cycle.

They kicked him on their way to recording the first album, not during. They basically took Dave all the way to NY while he blissfully thought they were on the same page and working together, and then once they arrived told him "you're out, here's some bus fare to get back to SF". As petty as Dave can be, you can see why he was bitter.

From where? SF or some other town they were touring in? fs, that's pretty cold.

From California, they all rented a truck with their gear and drove in shifts.

Kirk was flown out to NY the day of Dave's firing.

Phil's voice had an insane range on his first two Pantera albums, almost like a southern Halford. It's a shame that by the late 90s, booze, heroin, and screaming incoherently totally ruined it.

Incel effect. They got no pussy before the Black Album and complained about their audience being 100% "smelly dudes." They forced me to sit through an opening set by "Candlebox" in their 1994 tour because they knew that chick rock faggot shit would attract retard whores for them to pick out from the audience. I hope they all commit suicide

You can say aged out, but that is one thing I credit Ozzy. He wasn't up on stage embarras8ng himself like David Lee Roth or some old decrepit rockstar thinking they still have it. Ozzy leaned into his age and made it part of his act/stage persona.

It's okay cause it's admittedly trying to be artsy and out there. St Anger isn't that bad aside from the snareless snare drum. 72 Seasons is just straight up bad. And I think it's actually cause of Kirk Hamster. Everybody expects Lars to be bad and have somewhat accepted James is a Boomer dad who writes meme lyrics. But Hamster really dropped the ball, probably cause he doesn't give a shit. He just plays the same riffs and tries to make it sound good with his wah pedal. The production is also shit cause I guarantee they're probably trying to do it from their homes cause of COVID.

>>
>>214285910
I genuinely think Lars making a public spectacle out of Napster and illegal downloading was a psyop to push more people into downloading and devaluing music
>before Napster lawsuit, downloading music was mostly done by computer nerds
>suddenly in the year 2000, Lars is doing televised congressional hearings and fucking MTV appearances about FREE MUSIC ONLINE oh my science this must stop!
>normies en masse only focus on the FREE MUSIC part, start scouring online where they can get mp3s or finding the one computer nerd they know to point them in the direction or just give them free copies
>conversely there's an uptick in albums getting leaked, because the leakers know they have a wide audience to hear an album and just some autists on usenet.
>it's obvious the only people getting sued are those who have only a handful of downloaded songs, people with thousands of songs never hear a peep, because labels know it's impossible to litigate that
>oblivious that a bunch of millionaire musicians crying about losing money while they still live in mansions is a PR nightmare
Lars is either a giant retard or a fucking evil shit by basically cutting down the ladder for music profitability.

My problem with the Loads is that half the songs are cringe worthy and have elements in them that make them entirely unlistenable even if there are a few good riffs here and there.
