Most people are casual movie watchers. They want to see a mostly conventional story with conventional "ideas" and would often find a more contemplative film that focuses on visual/audio aspects "weird" or simply not as entertaining. This is related to making money of course, getting people to buy tickets. Fewer people are going to see Avengers if a truly good set of filmmakers is making it to be visually interesting and artistic than having a conventional super hero action plot.
