Currently reading Spock’s World. Lots of good lore on the Vulcans. Really makes me think Paramount should just put Diane Duane in charge of all trek lore going forward.

TNG is already a live action anime. All the characters are anime tropes. It had plenty of low stakes slice of life episodes in between high stakes battles. Data even has an anime aura.

I've always been Trek >>>> Wars but the transporter is the elephant in the living room that I try to ignore. If the technology exists to disintegrate a person into atoms/molecules, shoot the beam somewhere and rebuild it into the original person. then everyone who used a transporter is immortal. If you die, we can revert to your data in the pattern buffer from the last time you transported, then beam up random organic sludge and beam it down as you from say 8 hours ago.
>>
>>214275503
it would have made more sense as localized spacefolding but they explicitly ruled that out as causing space cancer in the episode where Dr. Beverly gets kidnapped by mall terrorists who look like Charles Sheffield from The Nanny
>>
>>214275503
from what I've retained from various transporter accident episodes you can't just save a pattern indefinitely and do what you're saying. there was some DS9 episode when not only did it take up inordinate amounts of memory there was also some kind of ticking clock element as well but I forget he details.

As much as I might think TMP is the most "pure" Star Trek movie, WoK is just undeniably a flawless popcorn movie in its own right. It's a masterclass in balancing satisfying action-adventure thrills and meaty character drama in a tight, efficient overall package. No surprise that Meyer was once one of Hollywood's most prolific script doctors.

It's about Kirk and Spock equally. They're both lost and out of their element and searching for their respective purposes. Kirk wants to get the Enterprise back and relive his glory days, but has to learn to appreciate how he, the ship and his friends have changed. Spock meanwhile is trying to purge his emotions and senses the same identity crisis in V'Ger, and through it learns to reconcile his human and vulcan sides, and both Spock and Kirk learn to open up and trust each other again.

also was the first time SNW managed to give me goosebumps. I have been loathing every episode and then they finally landed a knockout. Sure it's rehashing Enemy Mine but it worked

It's weird that everyone just casually agreed that good Kirk was captain, and bad Kirk wasn't the captain. Even though they both have equal official rank as captain of Enterprise and neither of their judgements should be trusted.
>>
>>214277430
It's kind of insane that the scene of Spock weeping for V'Ger didn't make the original cut. I guess it might seem redundant following the sickbay scene, but I think it's a worthy scene and might've also helped drive home the movie's themes for the midwits struggling to pay attention.

TOS chain of command depends on the writer that week. Sometimes Spock is First Officer. Is Bones Second Officer, or is he the doctor? Is Scotty Second Officer, or Chief Engineer? Why is the engineer always given the bridge when the main trio are beating up aliens on new planets? I'm glad TNG onwards put more thought into each crewmate's place.

Idk about that last part but the early seasons are unjustly overlooked. I actually think season 2 is mostly very solid and I will unironically defend the Kazon arc. It was the only time in the show's history that earnestly explored the long-running implications and consequences of Janeway/Voyager's cowboy diplomacy and was the closest the show ever came to fulfilling its own premise, to a certain extent.

Last I heard Tillyfag got kicked out by his wife and is literally a homeless man shambling through the streets ranting to himself about Nu Trek.

I really like Star Trek 5. I like religious fiction. Even though the writers punted at the end, I still thought it was worthy.
>>

You should check out the Prince of Nothing books. I'm on the last one now and it's been a wild theological ride.

>>
>>214279859
Jim, you don't ask the almighty for his ID
>>
>>214280012
Hmmm, maybe. Not really a fantasy fan. Thanks for sharing, though. Philip K. Dick wrote a lot of speculative fiction heavy with religious issues, e.g. Maze Of Death, Ubik, the VALIS quadrilogy, and the extended discussion of Mercerism in Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep, to name a few.
>>
>>214280202
Prince of Nothing is basically a guy writing out the life of a Christ/Muhammad-like figure in a way that is honestly pretty fucking disturbing. I'm on the final book and I still can't figure out if the main character is a good guy or a bad guy, if his actions are justified or if he's the worst megalomaniac to ever live.

It's heavy on the philosophy. Good stuff.
And if you're not typically into fantasy, you should try some that sort of rides the line between sci-fi and fantasy like Gene Wolfe's Dead Sun series which is basically people ascribing fantasy connotation to what is actually forgotten and lost technology and is written from an unreliable perspective of ignorance.
>>
>>214280102
Damn it, Bones, you're a doctor, not a theologian!
For a society that officially doesn't do religious belief, Star Trek sure has its share of divine beings. The Q, the Bajoran prophets, Gary Seven, Nagilum, the Douwd, etc.
And I would totally ask God for his ID. Then I would ask him to apologize for Creation. "hurr durr I only had 6 days" is an excuse, not a reason.
>>
>>214280297
Star Trek deals heavily with ideas of creation and origin, of transcending the physical and what is beyond the veil of our perception's limits.

It doesn't really take a stance and why should it?
>>
>>214280297
Gene Roddenberry was really interested in this idea. Starship meets god. that's basically all the scrips he wrote or wanted to write

No. Anime is actually the cheaper alternative. Hiring a western animation studio is genuinely very expensive even the result looks like its made in Adobe Flash. Their animators get paid more and there's all sorts of union stuff. Anime you think must've got a bazillion dollars because it looks great was typically made by people working insane hours below minimum wage.

According to McMahan the executives simply wanted it to be and look like a prime time animation. That's why they hired him specifically and why the show looks like that. Prodigy looks like an 3D animated kids show for saturday morning. Paramount executives genuinely tailor the look of specific shows to specific demographics and intended time slots like they're still dealing with broadcast or cable TV.

Kira is so interesting because like...because Gul Dukat put Odo in charge of this he already is basically a collaborator by that fact alone. But Odo is genuinely and dispassionately pursuing the truth without any bias, so far. doesn't matter to Kira though. she's just really far gone and entrenched in her mindset. makes it make more sense how even later on she doesn't even forgive her own mother who was actually just as much of a victim as she was. the hate is too strong.

>>
>>214282821
Exactly, but when they actually were a thing and they were 3D animated, they basically looked like Prodigy. They could've made Prodigy in a fresh and distinct style that takes advantage of modern 3D animation methods and lets the studio explore new ideas or whatever. But no, its a Nickelodeon show so it has to fit the design aesthetics of children's 3D animated shows. They actively think and say things out loud like "make it look like Reboot" even though that show is almost 30 years old and looks like that way because that was the state of 3D animation at the time. That''s the frame of reference these people operate under. When you watch a sitcom like friends or big bang theory, they could easily have made the show in a different style but that multi-camera stageplay look was deliberately picked so people would tune in and instantly go "Ah, a sitcom!" just based on the lighting, the staging, the camera angle, the set design, etc. They don't need to know what channel they're watching, what the plot of the episode is, any of actors names, etc. its all just based on how the show looks due to how its made. TV executives operate on that logic when designing what to make and how it should be made. Goes back decades. Even TOS borrows most of its design language from films like Forbidden Planet. People tuned in and saw a human with a yellow shirt standing next o some paper mache rocks with a gizmo in his hand and they just instantly knew it was a sci-fi show about traveling to alien planets because that's just what the show looks like.

like a VOY episode pointless cause everything needs an ending reset? yeah kinda
in terms of making a nice episode? no, it worked really well

I think they shoulda just left fans wondering what the fuck the lights were instead of doing the Metron reveal because Ortegas screaming at the sky about lights would have been a famous moment, but, it doesn't detract too bad; the freeze frame on people getting transported was a cool enough effect to make the trade worth it imo.

Somebody made friends with a Gorn. That's a HUGE forward leap on Gorn development, but since we're walking the line of keeping things to TOS canon they could only push it so far.
