A thing that bothers me about Cameron’s take on WY is that the first movie makes it clear that they’re an amoral corporation that doesn’t give a fuck about employee safety, but Cameron tries to build on this theme in a really clumsy way.He throws out the weird new age-y ‘70s sun logo, he adds the obnoxiously wink-wink slogan, he makes what’s basically a company pursuing growth at all costs and willing to ignore ethics rules look like they secretly have a cartoonishly evil plan to become xenomorph breeders or whatever.It’s kept in check in Aliens by Burke basically being a hot shot exec and WY being shown to provide actual goods and services, but the idea that the company is basically doing things just to be evil continues to haunt this franchise and I blame Cameron for it.It also just makes WY less believable as a company. They’re basically an industrial conglomerate in the original and subsequent directors have made them out to be fucking Doofenshmirtz Evil Inc for no reason. The original Alien was about the banality of evil; all these guys are working for shares that become more valuable specifically because of the policies that are endangering their lives. That goes away when WY is run by people who are ACTIVELY dicks.

You see a space ship - is the alien on the ship? You see a space jockey - is that the titular alien? You see eggs - are those the aliens? Will the aliens hatch from those? You see the facehugger - ah OK finally, the alien? OK I guess the alien is this golden worm? Oh wait fuckThe second movie needed to add a layer of mystery in terms of their life cycle. The idea that there's a queen or an army is cool, but it wasn't subversive or surprising, it was just used to elevate the stakes. It's fine, but it doesn't really expand on the themes of the original. Alien is a way better film.
