This was always better than The Sopranos and The WIre.
>>
nah, its damn good but you're smoking crack if you think it's Sopranos/Wire/Mad Men/Leftovers tier
>>
>>214311223
First two seasons clear all those shows even if the final season sucked.
>>
Deadwood has a problem with literally nothing fucking happening in it
>>
>>214311313
I'd disagree, every character goes through some kind of arc that ends up impacting their relationship with everyone else in a way that feels earned. Very few shows have accomplished that and this is why Deadwood deserves to be considered as much of a "Televised Novel" as Mad Men.
>>
>>214311313
It’s supposed to be le subversive western realism so it sets up a bunch of shootouts and leaves you blue balled when they don’t happen

I love the dialogue though I could listen to them go back and forth for hours
>>
>>214311213
>>214311223
>People still legitimately believe The Wire is one of the greatest shows of all time and not just called that cause it has black people in it
>>
>>214311550
It’s the only show where black people at least somewhat act like the moronic sociopathic criminals they all are
>>
what was the actual plan with the season 3 finale? the town is filed with gunmen on both sides and then hearst just leaves

also, i know you can't win either way with a resolution 10 years later in regard to which characters are still around and if they are the same as before, but the doc is practically on death's door in season 3 and then perfectly fine 10 years later in the movie
>>
>>214311213
Except the wire sucks
>>
>>214311683
Well, there was a build up of tensions all season with the Pinkertons and the rest of the town. Hawkeye (damn his hide) was tasked with buying mercs. I'm not sure if they got the call it was cancelled before or after they completed season 3, because everything seems wrapped up except for that.
There was talk of finishing it was a two part miniseries but nothing became of that.

As for Doc, well he is a skilled doctor and not everybody died from tuberculosis. They probably just wanted to have Brad Dourif back.
>>
>>214311550
retards are still willing to dismiss the Wire just because it has black people in it
>>
>have to keep subtitles on for every deadwood episode and half of the wire

thats why the sopranos will always be better
>>
>>214311683

more happens in the first season of deadwood than happens in the entire run of most shows
>>

The real deadwood burned down and had it gone on to a 4th season I always assumed Al would set the match, as he even said he would, but I guess they wrapped it up awkwardly and it never came to that

Strangely that's the only thing I've never been able to get into. I've tried watching it three times in ten years and never get past episode three. I hate everything about it. Must be the guy who he co-created it with and all the surfing shit getting in the way of whatever they're trying to do. People who love that show really love it but I can't do it. It just won't take.

only season 1 is worth watching. Its like that netflix show bloodline. Season 1 is absolute fucking kino so it got renewed for more seasons but one of their best characters becomes a side character and the whole show falls apart in season 2 onward and afterwards you are angry at how bad it got.
>>
>>214313862
Deadwood is not like some shit netflix show that anyone was angry that it got bad. It was a triumph from start to finish. The movie was closure enough I suppose. Bittersweet.

I'm trying to watch this show one more time. I just don't buy this world where all the press is so obsessed with some surfer kid. There's no reality where there's a swarm of reporters waiting outside the beach bum shack of some teenager who got gnarled by a wave. Between that and the metaphysical jesus guy walking around repeating everything and all these side characters and the grandparents' domestic arguments... where the FUCK is this going??
I'm already baked off my ass. Strict drug regimen to keep my mind limber. Still I can't dig this series. I'll power through it because I'm running out of old HBO that I haven't seen, but I hope I start liking it soon.
>>
>>214311313
Wild Bill Hickock gets shot in the back
Al Swearingens gang murders like two who saw the robbery
The Englishman gets scammed with the gold mine
And these are just the big ones. The best shit is to see Timothy Oliphants character trying to hold his burning rage.
>>
>>214317332
Jane has a way with words and she's loyal. She cleans up okay too. You have to remember that even though those people (especially the drunkards) often walked around stinking to high heaven they usually bathed before having sex. Especially the type of place Joanie keeps. There were skanks at the Gem who'd lay with anyone and we even learn that they stink themselves without some boss madame like Joanie or even just someone with sense like Trixie telling them to get it together.
Notice some characters clearly hate the disgusting aspects of life back then. Like when Silas comes to town and he really just wants a bath before he has to do anything else.
>>
>>214317485
Don't forget the bloodbath George Hearst brings to town.
Very complex stuff. I had to watch again and pay close attention to figure out what happened to Aunt Lou's son and I'm still not 100% sure what happened and why.

There's certainly an attention barrier that a lot of idiots and zoomers have to get past for shows like Deadwood. There's no scrolling on your phone with Deadwood on for your first watch through. Not if you want to truly understand everything going on. I love shows that don't dumb it down. It's almost a challenge for some people to follow the dialogue of characters like E.B. White, but I get off on the lush speech. Once in a while some character on NYPD Blue would spin some wild phrasings and you knew Milch was having some fun on that script.
>>
>>214312041
based, I strongly believe this could have an been an all-timer if it wasn't prematurely cancelled. that said, Milch said in his memoir that he wasn't happy with the direction or the finished product (he wasn't allowed on-set to work his magic) and was happy enough that it was cancelled.

Not in the least. First of all, if I want an accurate historical piece I'll read a book. I watch tv series for fiction not something where as a writer you do not have the freedom to do what you want because you would be disregarding actual history. Second of all it spins its wheels too much for that to be true.

>>
>>214318269
It plays with that all the time. There are meta jokes like "Did people really talk like that back then?" And the guy just making up Hickock's "dead man's hand" as part of his ever-widening tale of the murder he witnessed.

You go read your history books and watch your sci-fi and fantasy superhero slop. Deadwood is too limited to be enjoyable.

I just finished this recently.
Season 1 was so good, the show really shined when it was just random shenanigans going on, wild bill, al's schemes etc

Season 2 and 3 was a fucking slog, like really boring except from a few moments. a very little plot strung out over 2 seasons. All that shit about the annexation/politics and hearst just wasnt interesting enough to drag out over 2 seasons.

Also trixie was really fucking annoying from the start of season 2. I couldn't stand the bitch, just angry at everyone, smoking and flying off the handle at the jew who should have smacked the taste out her mouth.

Nothing tops season 2 of the wire. That could be a stand alone mini series and it tops most things ive ever watched. Yes it starts off slow but all seasons of the wire did. Its kino

You people act like this isn't an anonymous forum. I don't give a fuck what you think of me. If you're so dismissive of Deadwood because it's grounded in reality you're a fucking idiot and you must like idiot fare. You have no idea the creative liberties they take in these historically set shows. Look at Rome or Borgias or any of them. They jumble shit around and add whatever they want. They don't have to adhere to shit.
>>
>>214311213
It's not, but it gets close. The first two seasons are some of the best television ever produced but the third season and the movie are just a little worse and make it not a perfect show. Still, one of the best. Ever.
>>
>>214319233
>Look at Rome or Borgias
Both slop, especially Borgias. Those are very good examples though because reading about Rome and Borgia makes for a better time than watching those mediocre shows. Deadwood simple spins its wheels too much and because it's based on real events instead if inspired you know a large majority of characters are not in danger of ever dying.

it's not fantasy. the wire is just an anachronistic show that's technically set in the 00s but most of the material comes from the 80s when the two main writers worked in baltimore as a journalist and a cop. for example the old black priest character is played by a guy that used to be a major local heroin dealer that the writer who used to be cop put in prison back in the 80s, and the character of avon barksdale is partially based on him.
