We really need a historically accurate Cortes or Pizarro biopic. What most people think is that both Cortes and Pizarro managed to nuke the local empire "because they had horses and guns" and that's just blatantly untrue. There were so many ways this could have gone differently, and at multiple occasions the Indians could easily fucking kill either. The conquistadors won because of the sheer balls they had, balls that boggled the mind of the natives. The fucking cheek of Cortes arresting Montezuma in the midst of Tenochtitlan and Pizarro by the way pulled the same fucking stunt at Cajamarca, with full awareness, 12 years later and also managed to get away with it. It's almost as if the sheer audacity of the stunt just mogged the Indians into submission every time. Militarily, the conquistadors could have easily been crushed and the horses and guns were never that much of an advantage, there were never more than a couple hundred in each army.

I read the journal of Bernal Diaz recently, it's a great read. It's quite insane how they managed to survive, they faced almost insurmountable odds, lost half their people multiple times, got injured every other day, yet they still prevailed.

Again, I can highly recommend these journals of Bernal Diaz. It's quite well written, you can find them on gutenberg. It's an interesting read, starts with the 2 failed expeditions that came before, which are a nice intro. At least for me, when I started I couldn't put it down.
