With the Late Night Comedy genre seemingly collapsing does it seem clear that Bill Maher will be the only one left standing? How has he managed to completely dominate the genre in what is basically a historical first?

I don't always agree with him but he's clearly intelligent, decently funny, and most admirably isn't afraid of saying something his audience will disagree with. Colbert's "comedy" offered a safe, oversaturated point-of-view you can find anywhere else, so it's not surprising people got bored of it.
There's an entire sect of centralists that feel underrepresented, and Maher is the answer to that. "He's not funny, he's got some awful grandstanding, but at least he thinks like me!" Is the call of the midwit, from all points on the political compass. And with this class of centrism, we find a person who is hyper-outspoken on a variety of issues but to extremes, where he'll denounce a genocide but in the next few episodes call for support to the country doing said genocide.
