you confuse my disinterest in the brown people for racism. perhaps a fair assessment considering it is /tv/. no, my disinterest stems from the Apple TV Plus mandated soap opera breaks between the brown people. the cleons are the only real science fiction in this science fiction television show. please kindly fuck off in assuming we are kindred. the day you die will be a marked improvement for humanity
>>
i watched the first episode of S1, found it pretty decent, and then dropped it a few episodes after when it was obvious they weren't making any effort to adapt the books (which do need a lot of adaptation, but holy hell not like that).

can someone who has read the books and (somehow) stuck with the show explain what the show actually is in relation to the books? like i see stuff about the mule, but also stuff about the empire still being around? in the books the mule shows up well after the empire rump state is gone, trantor is like an abandoned agricultural planet when they get there. also did they do the clown fake-out, it'd be weird if they didn't because it's like the one time asimov shows he's an actual writer lol
>>
>>214325648
This is not a TV show, its a horror show of godless DEI fantasies about taking over the roles they never earned.
>>
>>214328015
>what the show actually is in relation to the books?
The show follows the general plotline of the books but shuffles things around and adds their own headcanon in some places.
Empires demise is postponed to coincide with the mule arriving, which is actually a really good choice because empire in the show is superior to the books due to the genetic dynasty and daneel/demerzel playing a much bigger role
The most egregious deviations from the book are related to Gaal Dornick, who leads the second foundation, and also to the general concept of single people being able to change the course of history if they try hard enough, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of psychohistory.

So far one of the worst things about the show right now is the retarded clothes the space influencer dude wears. They really couldn't give him a new wardrobe in the last couple episodes where days have gone by?
Also the retarded contemporary dance sequence that told us the story of robot extinction for the 10th time. I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up for robot cultists, thought they could make them not retarded considering how the episode that lore dumped about the mother religion in the first season was pretty good.

It's Magnifico. He played for all the foundation nerds and they even made a point of "HEH HEH OKAY WELL LET'S GET ALL OUR COMMANDERS IN HERE TOO TO HEAR SOME MUSIC :D" at the time, and they made a point of explaining how most of foundation's soldiers and pilots were throwing a shitfit and it was their commanders that were doing the dumb shit. Plus he's friends with Bayta since she's the only one who was ever genuinely nice to him. Unless they're specifically trying to piss off book nerds by having a 100% Mule analog and then not make him the Mule

>>214326933
I think the baby's a red herring. That's probably just an implanted memory or something, hence Seldon saying the story didn't add up
>>
>>214331868
Actually anon, ty, that you posted may be enough! You got any that shows the Galactic Councils pseudo O'Neill 3 cylinder?
>>
I think the show is getting better but, upon rereading Foundation, it's obvious there's missing potential. For example, the show doesn't really explain why the Empire's collapse is imminent. Visually, the books portray Trantor as completely cut off from nature to such a point that most people never even see the outside world. They also describe how the planet has tens of thousands of ships supplying it with food, goods, etc. because the heart of the empire is fully dedicated to administration and becoming increasingly specialized, centralized, and therefore vulnerable. They describe a weak Empire dominated by nobles and bureaucrats. Basically, Trantorians are utterly coddled and incapable of surviving any challenge. None of this is conveyed in the show. You just don't get a sense of why Hari Seldon's predictions are true, whether visually or narratively.
>>
>>214331887
The problem is that they wrote themselves into a corner regarding the twist.
The mule (the pirate) keeps having visions of gaal, he's the one who wants to find the second foundation and has all these conquering thoughts even without magnifico nowhere near. The pirate mule also has mental abilities without magnifico being present.

The only way a twist would work is if the show does a "teehee, magnifico implanted all that evilness into the mule and he also somehow can control his telepathic powers!!!" Which would be insanely retarded.
>>

>>214331917
Help me with the episode and timestamp
>>
>>214331957
>None of this is conveyed in the show
It is, it's just never spelled out and usually sidelined for the plot.
There are more than enough indications that trantor is a capital type planet that gets all of its shit supplied to it, and has nothing else going for it other than being the seat of empire
>>
>>214332009
>The pirate mule also has mental abilities without magnifico being present.
I don't think we've actually seen that. For the first point with Pirate obsessing about Gaal and everything, since he's the puppet-Mule the actual Mule presumably has some standing orders to be looking for them since he's the one that would've actually cared. Gaal saw Pirate in her vision, sure, but similar to why we've seen Pirate in people's heads I assume it's because it's who people THINK is the Mule. If you're being mind controlled by the bald dweeb in the corner while stinky space pirate is talking about how he's mind controlling you, you (And presumably everyone else watching) is going to think it's Pirate doing it, so in your mind when you think of the Mule you think of Pirate

Back to Pirate having powers, I'm not sure he does. The only times we've seen him genuinely 100% using powers are during scenes where he could easily be hiding Magnifico in the background, like the episode 1 opening scene where he walks out of the woods and fucks everything up, and after he conquered his first world and was swanning around the dining room (Again, Magnifico in the background). After he took the Foundation he made Indbur go drown himself, BUT Indbur got a full blast of Mule-music earlier and again, Pirate is the one being presented as the Mule so all the Mule has to do is implant "You love Pirate you'll do anything he wants" and Pirate continues thinking he's got powers. The most questionable bit is when Pirate is molesting Dawn in his ship you get some wibbly psyker effect going on, but unlike most psychic scenes we don't even leave the scene to get some internal mental shenanigans which leads me to believe Pirate is thinking he's reading minds when he's doing jack shit since Dawn hasn't been Mule'd

I was fine with your theory but here you're just coping. Sure I can imagine the show throwing this in as a red herring but it's an insanely disingenuous, retarded red herring bringing me back to the point that it's too late now to execute any sort of twist in a great manner
I can imagine the show going the route of "mule gets defeated, magnifico takes his place when nobody expects it". That sounds much more plausible to me

I bring it up because that's the one area that does look most like Pirate still has powers, but since the end result is just Larry David-ing Dawn, it makes me think it's all in Pirate's head. And Dawn grunting and groaning like he's being brain-raped is probably just because he's got spiral cut hams for legs now. To be honest I expect them to do some shit like the baby was the Mule and Pirate is in fact his retarded psychic but not as psychic brother because it would piss me off, but the way everything's been presented I still have a bit of hope that Pirate's just some random jackass warlord that's puppeted more than anyone else

I would agree with that BUT in season 1 it's established that the foundation was out on the absolute frontier of the empire at its peak, and the empire has shrunk significantly by now, and their big doomsday weapon deterrent would've been built to threaten the other factions within the empire since there's no external threats to the empire. So I can understand the weapon being able to hit the other major factions but not the foundation. Where it's stranger is it would imply the weapon is being fired through some FTL portal if Dusk is able to have planets killed in real time like that, but it's sci-fi so you can say the warp field generated by surrounding the beam with bobalon particles dissipates when exposed too long to the reversed polarity of hyperspace hence it can't reach the foundation and job's a good un

The emperors have no real power in the books and no one really cares for the Empire's fate, including the bureaucrat who sends them to Terminus just so they stop bothering him. It's a sinking ship without a captain. You just don't get that same feeling with the show, with emperors being strong and proactive to the end. In the books, the Empire's fall is a foregone conclusion. Here, they keep teasing that it might keep going if some of the actors make the right moves, which makes for better drama but also contradicts the books' psychohistory premise.

Demerzel claims a previous Cleon shortened the lifespan of the Cleons as the clone degeneration thing they have makes Dusk get dementia before the original kill-date.
This is also why Dawn is becoming Day early.

In earlier seasons, Dawn had aged to look like Lee Pace when he ascended to the middle throne. In this season it's still the younger actor. Similarly, Dusk isn't in the advanced age makeup as he doesn't get to live that long.
Basically each Cleon lives like 10 years less now or some shit.
>>
>>214332009
>Which would be insanely retarded.
We're dealing with a Death Star and a psychic that instantaneously rewrites peoples' brains.

I don't really care if the Mule was in the books - it is a profoundly retarded concept from the get-go as almost all stories involving ridiculously powerful psychics are. Warhammer doesn't even get that fucking retarded even the most powerful beings in that universe can't fucking rewrite multiple brains just by looking at them. The entire story could have focused on the simple struggle of the Foundation and not have all these ridiculous one-off cultures like Mycogen and the three planets Dusk vaporized - nobody fucking cared about them to begin with so I can't imagine anybody caring they got nuked.

The entire fucking twist in the books was that the Second Foundation was on Terminus headed by Demerzel - that should have been the fucking thing they did. They had it all setup perfectly by making her a robot. They could have had Empire and Jared Harris and ditched the fucking cast after the first season.

>clone degeneration thing
This was a completely stupid plot point. It's ridiculous to think that the original Cleon (and Demerzel) did not have his entire genome mapped and have backups to ensure purity. How else could they fucking make more clones if not carefully using the perfect genetic code each time - you can't just sample from living Cleons that's just a window to allow mutations to enter the line.

They forgot the most simple thing about Cleon - he is smart. Nobody wants to watch a retarded Cleon they want to see a person with their full mental capacity deal with these problems even if they fail. I don't mind fat Day - he's just a smart guy who doesn't give a fuck. But making Dusk senile is so terrible because you can't tell if the cruelty is him or the dementia.

I don't really buy that. It's been a long time since I read the Foundation series but the fall of the Roman Empire is far more clear in my mind and I just can't really accept that the books or the show ever come close to Rome's fall in feeling.

Like I really enjoyed the part in the book where the Foundation merchant escapes imprisonment by bribing an official with a nuclear-device knowing that there is no way the technology can be maintained. But the moment Morgoth and various other telepaths and bullshit entered the story it stopped being any kind of analogy to humanity's crawl out of the dark ages. It became a story about magics and magic spaceships. I seriously wish I hadn't read all the Foundation books and just left Asimov at I, Robot.

>analog to Jesus
I see it, the whole conversion thing and all. And I do love me a Jesus analogy. But I'm going to stick by what I said that Foundation has too much stupid shit going on to make a Rome or Jesus analogy land.

The thing about Rome that makes it so interesting is that everything about its fall is very human so much so that we can see examples in today's world. I see Rome and Jesus in Foundation but the problem is that it doesn't feel human - it doesn't even feel sci-fi. It's fantasy, and even with Jesus-Mule playing God in the story it just wasn't written well or right.

I don't think any old space opera is okay. Some minor thing that snaps me out is every time a Cleon is able to leave the palace - it's not acceptable. It's space-future, meetings should just be in the open because it's fucking Empire and he can do whatever he wants. Like who cares if Demerzel knows she has the power of the decant she'll abandon you with a thought so why not go everywhere with a real escort to ensure you don't get decanted. Demerzel has been forced to follow the Three Laws of Robotics plus Rule-Zero. Rule-Zero states that a robot cannot by action or inaction allow humanity to come to harm, but this has been tweaked to mean Empire rather than humanity. This is why she can kill any of the Cleons for good reason because Empire is more than just any Cleon.

Also, the palace staff would be fucking retarded to not understand Demerzel has total authority short of a Cleon.

If you ask me the Cloud Dominion lady needed to die because she knew the robot secret; Dusk needed to die because he cared for her and would rebel with her death. I think these qualify as "good" reasons.
>>
Thought the Mule was stupid in the books and now also here. The only reason Asimov even put telepaths in the story was because of that robot short story 'Liar!', which had the telepathic robot. I liked that, but not sure why he had to have people with the ability. I guess he wrote himself into a corner with the math being able to predict everything.

>>214341330
you are right in that sense, throughout time people would have definitely wised up to her somehow always being around. Then again, how many people know palace internal comings and goings. The show certainly acts like nobody knows what she is even doing or what here role is. So in their own internal story logic, she is not known to have power. She doesnt even seem to be rumoured to have power although they changed that in the last episode where she asked for the forbidden book and she said "I'm empire" and the librarian knew what she meant and went through with it.
>>
>>214341693
I never really understand why Foundation was considered so great. To me his writing shined with his robot short stories. After I read all those and got to the detective and buddy robot novels it took me a lot of time to adjust to the different style, which I thought was poor. Though maybe it was cause I'm not into detective novels.

Foundation was one of those things where they threw money at Asimov to make more. Actually, most of Asimov's career was writing any old thing because people would pay him - like Stephen King. And no surprise, the vast majority of their stuff is total garbage.

You have to remember that science fiction fans treated Star Wars as the greatest thing ever. Like really think about that, Star Wars does not hold up today yet they still think that. Hitchhiker's is a shit series and any sane person would realize the fandom are the same meme-deranged people today. I only read books like Foundation and Dune off the hype of that generation. And Dune is just as stupid - you really can only talk about Dune positively in broad terms without going into details such as the existence of prescience and interfering with prescience.

There are very few "classics" in science fiction. Canticle for Leibowitz, Neuromancer, and Brave New World are the only two I know of and read.

Bayta Mallow is the actual Mule. She made Euron (another mentalic) a patsy to execute all her plans by making him believe he is the one who went through what she did. Magnifico is her brother who she had left as a baby in that farm planet and has Euron get him back an realizes Magnifico can enhance mentalc powers exponentially or something. if you're gonna bother representing it, at least bother making it look OK

>>214345266
not how it works, numbnuts
black holes bend light enough to show stars that are far, far, far behind them, so the hexagon thingie is gonna be lensed in large part
also, the black sphere you "see" isn't the event horizon: it's the black hole shadow (which is about 2.5 larger already than the Schwartzchild radius, ie the event horizon, for a rotating black hole, which is the only kind of black hole that makes sense anyway: so already far from the actual event horizon, light is very much affected)
and all light that passes through several further shadow radii (so about an order of magnitude bigger than the event horizon) is well known to be severely lensed, which is my point, you drooling imbecile

should I watch this show? I was thinking about it but it looked like it was full of groids so I never bothered
>>
>>214346084
It's pretty gud
I'm usually turned off by 3d slop but the premise is really cool and it's well written
>>
>>214346111
OOOPS wrong thread kek
>>214346084
If you like sci-fi and large scales then yeah it's good. Be warned though the slop factor is a pyramid, meaning it keeps increasing throughout s1 up to the middle of s2, and then starts decreasing again. S3 has very little amounts of slop
>>
>>214328853
Wasn't the Galactic Council on some enormous space station habitat rather then the planet?
>>
>>214346234
Yes, the habitat is shown shortly before that shot
>>

Most of Asimov's writing is about smart science Jews having duty to lead the cattle masses

>You have to remember that science fiction fans treated Star Wars
Star Wars is just a rehash of Lensman series from the Golden Age of SF. It even has Space Empire and doomsday weapons.
>>
>>214346254
It's kind of saving grace of the series, they go beyond the standard depictions if space empires and there is a bit of an effort to show heights of what a galactic civilization would look like, even at its decline.

I want to read political thrillers but think I'm too good for that airport novel trash, so I exclusively read the handful of sci-fi novels with that vibe and pretend they're the only good one because it lets me feel smart even though I'm dumber than a bag of rocks mounted on two short planks being carried by a retard.

this looks so fucking bad...
glad I jumped off after the first couple of s1 episodes

Here's your Isaac Asimov adaptation, bro
>>
>>214325648
During his lifetime, when Isaac Asimov--who had been to the Soviet Union--give 1984 its bad review, he commented that it was unrealistic and unthinkable that any state would have children informing on their parents and neighbors on each other, and called Orwell a reactionary Nazi for slandering Communism.

The whole Mule plot seems really stupid, is it really in the book?

>>214349737
It's even stupider in the book because there's an ebin twist that the mule was actually someone else all along

what kind? cartoon super villain or actually competent complex hierarchy?

it is but there's no point in drawing parallels between the book and the show, that ship had sailed in S01E01

bad parts of season 1 are very bad but the good parts of season 1 are very good
it never reaches those points again but overall it improves season to season
they are constantly trying to dunk on the white boy emperors but they are so lovable and based they are cool even when the writers try to bring them down
>>
>>214353153
Far worse than that. Recall how Demerezel was found by Cleon I. It can be applied to humans as well

what a stupid overreaction to such a minor thing
it's no worse than fashion choices encountered today or in the past across centuries
fashion gets outdated fast and emerging trends are ridiculous as well
somehow fake baboon asses are being push and you're weirded out by some eye makeup that is very subdued all things considered
they have to keep giving them distinct looks to to keep the cultural change visible throughout the centuries
what's the name of that nasty monkey who was twerking in that marvel show
and you're pissy about some marginally wider eye shadow
