When I was a kid people really just dozed through the dialogue and plot-slop and just started paying attention with the action. Revenge of the Sith was well adored in its entirety though, the popular opinion was that the ending of Attack of the Clones was well loved. It's the Phantom Menace that really didn't have much appeal. George Lucas intuitively does understand what twelve year olds find cool. So even when he flops, he's speaking a kid's language. The new movies do seem to not really land with children at all. Also the Prequels had a lot of creative ideas and unique designs. Those went right into the games and books and all the other material. The Sequel designs were just all OT rip-offs, and the extended universe now is notoriously shit and onions.
