The original Pirates movie was so damn good. It has aged like fine wine.
>aged loke a fine wineALL movies from the 2000s have aged well. Why? Because movies today SUCK
>>214344436I just want more block buster movies with women dressed in pretty old timey clothes make corset kino great again!
Three fives
It looks grounded despite insane fantasy elements, and I don't know how to explain why
>>214344827thats unironically a good scene and a good game, but it got butchered in the editing.
>>214344840because it wasnt all cheap CGI made by indian sweatshops
>>214344436The first one is a perfect film in every way. The second and third don't have the best screenplays, but the casting and the production design are so insanely good that one overlooks any issues.
>>214344827To this day I still have no idea if they're trying to get more years or fewer.
But WHY is the rum gone?
>>214344486/thread
Bloom and Keira Knightley ruined the sequels, they were such boring leads.
The first one is a 10/10 movie. 2 and 3 are a bit bloated but still very fun and worth rewatching from time to time. The ones after that are utter shit and I hate them so much.
>>214344436>>214345404I only recently learned the general consensus is that 2 is bad and 3 is good. I thought for 20 years people loved 2 for Davy Jones. But apparently his CGI was the only really good part of it and it suffers from middle-sequel reception (and the goofy meandering aspects with Jack being flanderized/leaned into).Feels like mandela effect level shit for me personally to find out the third film is preferred.
>>214345003There's no question that the wagers were to shift years toward the loser. So are you thinking they may have been trying to lose?
>>214344436Guybrush Threepwood? In a blockbuster? It is more likely than you think, click here to find out why.
>>214345445I think you may have been shifted from another dimension. In this one the consensus is 3 is a bloated overwrought mess that has some high highs but just as many low lows and generally drags on too much. Both sequels are considered to be generally inferior to the original but 3 catches a lot more criticism than 2. Personally I really like them all even recognizing that structurally the original is leagues ahead of the rest
>>214345520Not the anon you're responding to but I've wondered this as well. Weren't they there because they are trying to avoid death? Davey Jones offers them servitude to put off their passage to the afterlife, so why are they gambling for fewer years? I guess they realise their mistake, is that it?
>>214345638I had reason to look this up like 6 months ago and everything I saw at the time was suggesting 2 was worse than 3. When my entire life I've understood the consensus to be basically what you just described.
>>214345404>The first one is a 10/10 movie.Jack volunteers dozens of English sailors to die during the final battle and everyone is cool with it after
>>214345803Oh sorry, you're right. It's actually an 11/10.
>>214344959>kino story>kino script >kino sets>kino costumes >kino fights/stunts>kino soundtrack Depp/Rush are megakino, Bloom/Knightley are ok and don't detract anything, probably every actor's peak performance. Sequels are too bloated though they have their moments. Shit from Pirates 4 onward.
>>214344436I was pretty hyped when Dead Man's Chest was about to come out on account of Bill Nighy as Davy Jones.
I prefer LeChuck's Revenge, and Orlando Bloom is awful in everything

>>214344436I presume that the Pirates movies dont get talked about, especially since the 1st one is S tier easy. because disney and me too delusional women were so sure that depp was a piece of shit.
On Stranger Tides is underrated and is better than 2/3
>>214345803Everyone is okay with it? You mean like Norrington who had him put to death? Yeah he was totally okay with it. Or I suppose you mean Will and Elizabeth who were in the unique position to know that the Pearl's pirates were invincible and so understood Jack's need to get them out of the cave. It's almost like the main cast are meant to have become more like pirates by the end or something.
>>214344486It's funny watching old tv shows from the 90s that had no budget so everything looks kinda shitty but they manage to sell the story so much better than anything modern with 100x the budget due to competent writing and casting

>>214346516It's a shame but Disneys fault. Hiring two retarded nobody duo directors. Then they rejected Terry Rusios script for it (original writer for 1 to 4). Depp being fat and literally drunk thanks to Heard. And his severed finger during filming they had to cgi the bandage out, thanks to Heard. It could have been a decent one if Depp actually looked and acted like Sparrow, which you only really see right at the very end with his last scene.
>>2143462693 has the best scene and quote in the series that heralded everything that came after.
>>214346573Yeah if Sparrow acted like Sparrow I wouldn't have even cared. The entire drunk retard act was fucking horrible to sit through. I feel like they dumbed every character down in the movie.

Take away my crew. My compass. My crew. My Hat. I have nothing. I even started to believe myself. But there’s one very important thing you’ve forgotten mate. I’m Captain Jack Sparrow. When I first saw 3 I was pissed off. They killed the Kraken OFF SCREEN??? Huh??? Why??? I just remember being a kid after seeing 2 and wondering how they were going to kill this Kraken, he seemed almost unbeatable. Imagine Return of the Jedi just skipped over everything related to Jabba the Hutt and Boba Fett, and instead Darth Vader just had some line saying "Luke, just like I killed Boba Fett and Jabba the Hutt, we can kill the Emperor!" Everyone would be pissed off. Then all the bullshit with Calypso, it was just a bit lame in execution but a cool concept as they built up to it. Anyway, I have watched the movie a few times since over the years and I still can't get over how dirty they did the Kraken. That was what made Jones so scary in the first place, not his teleporting or his lumbering barnacle heads.
>>214344827Three threes
>>214347237Killing Kraken off screen and the remark about it is the whole point. Immaterial become material, age of piracy was over and even literal mythical beasts aren't enough to keep good business at bay.

>>214344959>>214345404I know 2 is the one movie that doesn't have Barbossa in it, but I still consider it the best one. Even despite the low energy scenes with Will and his dad on Davy Jones' crew. It's just so nicely put together that even I could tell what makes it so good.

i know it's a pale imitation of PotC and i know it's mediocre and full of woke shit, but i enjoyed jungle cruise despite all that. i am a sucker for pre-WW1 settings, and the scene where the conquistadores gets BTFO by the jungle demons is so damn good. the soundtrack there really hits

>>214349398the scene where barbossa says "you best start believing in ghost stories" was pretty mindblowing to me at the time. not revolutionary, we had great CGI in LotR movies etc, but having that kind of transformation happen front and center and in focus felt like a new watermark for quality
Elizabeth Swan was the first time the concept of "girl boss" ever appeared in my mind. Obviously girl boss didn't exist as a term back then, but that one scene in the third movie where she's all dirtied up, and they tell her to drop her weapons, and she drops a ton of scary looking weapons, and then people in the movie theater laughed, as if saying "uh oh don't mess with her!"It left a bad taste in my mouth after seeing her as useless and girly in the first movie. I've never seen it so blatantly, and it has poisoned girl bosses for me ever since. It wasn't planted in my head by angry /pol/tards

But she was 17 indeed, and there was something about her not being allowed to touch chalices with wine or some other similar alcohol-related legal restriction.(I'm sure most alcohol on sets is fake anyway, but I can imagine that in some shots and in some interactions wine needs to look and behave like wine)

I saw Pride & Prejudice this week at a local theater and even in that role where the director specifically told her not to pay much attention to her looks she is gorgeous. They're showing Atonement next week and she's even more ridiculously beautiful in that film. Lucky us!
>>214348954Isn't Disney Cruise far more of a Mummy 1999/2001 ripoff?Admittedly I still haven't actually seen it. I remember the trailers and also I saw a little bit of the movie itself in passing on someone else's tv.But I think the character archetypes and the whole setup feel very Mummy, from what I know about the story here.

>>214351125In the commentary track (or some other similar material) for the first film, Geoffrey Rush says that while filming the scenes when Elizabeth is captured and is taken to Black Pearl, he developed a theory about how the viewer's gaze would be drawn to the funny monkey and the beautiful girl, so he suggested to block the scenes with him and Keira (and the monkey) so that they would often be Barbossa-monkey-Elizabeth, left-to-right.I'm not sure it makes much sense (eyes don't scan the frame horizontally left to right anyway) but it feels like a comment that would probably make someone irrationally angry these days.
>>214344840It was a good period piece with a fantasy movie nested inside it.
>>214344840>>214355235POTC 1 in particular isn't even all that fantastical.Obviously, YES, the curse and the undead pirates. But it's essentially the one fantastical element in it. It's not a movie set in a fantasy land where this shit is a part of the rules of the world. It's explicitly set in the real world. Somewhat embellished / movie-like / PG-13 version of the real world, but much in the same way as any other grounded adventure movie that remembers that it needs to be fun and a bit larger-than-life.The curse of undead pirates is something that catches everyone in the film off guard. It also doesn't invite any other Le Random Crazy Stuff to start happening just because this specific element is unrealistic. It's not very different from some rare/unusual natural phenomenon that characters could experience. It's also not treated by the story as "hey look, this is a movie about undead creatures". It's a story about pirates and adventures first and foremost.
the soundtrack is also kinotoo bad Johnny is now too fat and old to properly play Jack
>>214344436A bit too "low-brow family-friendly slapstick disney" on a third rewatch. The real pirate kino is the fan edit of 3 found here:https://faneditsdesamuelbarilla.blogspot.com/2014/09/pirates-of-caribbean-extended-editions.html

>>214345404I didn't like 2 when I saw it in theaters years and years ago, but always liked Black Pearl, which I recently rewatched. I'm gonna watch Dead Man's Chest again this weak, and At world's End, if I like 2 of course. So 2 and 3 still hold up as decent if you liked Curse of the Black Pearl? So what's the best parts of 2 and 3? I know Davy Jone's CGI is supposed to be fantastic, but what else do 2 and 3 have going for it? Is Jack Sparrow really entertaining? What about the villains?
