I wouldn't feel guilty in Luke's place. The Death Star was going to destroy Yavin VI and everyone on it. Negotiating with the empire was not possible. Surrender would not spare the lives of the people on Yavin IV. They did not have enough time to evacuate before the Death Star appeared. The Empire had already destroyed a planet full of innocent people for no other reason than to punish political dissent from the planet's leadership and to demonstrate their ruthlessness. Thus we can safely assume the rebels had every right to feel their destruction was immanent, and that if they did nothing they would all perish much the same way the people of Alderaan did. So their choices were clearly two main options: first, they could do nothing and meekly accept annihilation. Second, they could resist and try to prevent their destruction by incapacitating the death star, or destroying it. The death star was a fortress filled with imperial soldiers and bristling with weapons, and despite having the plans to the death star the rebels could find only one weakness in its defenses which if exploited would cause the entire station to explode.Therefore the only way to survive was to destroy their enemies in turn. Perhaps a pacifist would've been content to simply let the empire destroy him instead of destroying in order to survive, but Luke was not a pacifist and neither am I. I will kill if doing so will preserve my life.Now, even given all of this above, Luke was not the one who made the decision to destroy the death star and condemn its millions of staff and garrison soldiers to death. That decision was made by the rebels' leadership, without consulting Luke's opinion on the matter, and he was simply handed orders for the ensuing battle for all of their lives. During the course of the battle, it was pure chance (or Force destiny w/e) that led to Luke being the one to take the fatal shot that destroyed the death star and everyone in it. If not him, another might've done it.

In 20 years there might not be any more fans of Star Wars than there are right now, in fact there might be less. Disney's main concern right now is how to win back kids, and that means how to win back boys. But Disney does not have a good track record with winning a male audience. That is the whole reason they bought Star Wars in the first place.
