Simply put, the show lost it's flair, and a large part of it is because, like a couple of anons said, the length of time in between seasons was too long.
The story was the problem.The first season was great.You had a great B plot whodunnit with the hyde, and a great A plot with a satisfying conclusion with Goody Adams.Season 2 had the framework of the overarching A plot with Slurp, but there was no B plot (unless you count the recycled hyde plot, which was just part of the A plot), just pure filler.And somehow despite all that filler, most of the supporting cast had nothing to do.Billie Piper - nothing to doEnid - nothing to do for the first halfAjax, Bianca, Dort, Casper Van Dien - nothing to do, that whole morning song storyline should've been scrapped.They gave the Addams family much more screentime, which wasn't the problem per se.The problem is that they were mostly again, given nothing to do except chew scenery for most of their scenes, where there was no 'point' to many of the scenes.One of the episodes where all the Addams had substantial screentime AND a lot of things to do was the camp episode which is why it was so great. That was the episode where Pugsley releases the zombie in the camp, Gomez takes a shower, and Morticia duels Wednesday, great episode with a lot of fun hijinks.It was an economical episode where every scene was either entertaining or moved the plot or characters forward while world-building.Every other episode wasted so much time.

Ortega isn’t playing the original comic version of Wednesday Addams, or the original TV version of Wednesday, she is playing a slightly altered version of the Sonnenfeld movie version of Wednesday, altered into an angsty teenage girl detective character. As for the fan desire for a lesbian storyline, the showrunner or actresses, or at least Ortega, seem to have bern annoyed, and basically made a plotline in part 1 of season 2 pointing out the “creepiness” of the “fangirls”.
