With Jack, the idea is that he's finally come into his own and is no longer living in the shadow of people like Vane.But it's underscored by the fall of Nassau, the breakup of that community, the end of the golden age, the death of almost all their friends, the empire's victory and, most important, the historical context of knowing their ultimate fate along with the book Treasure Island which shows that they all either retired, died or stayed obsessing over a treasure they could never have.It's a sad story about growing old which I guess only becomes really poignant when you grow older yourself and the scenes you were in when you were younger come to an end (or become bastardised)
