Like the other anon said, Kodi if you just want a self contained solution. I'd recommend Jellyfin if you want a client/server model that you have complete control of that lets you store all your media on one device and stream it to all your other devices over your local network, or even over the internet if you're willing to jump through some hoops.

I personally prefer something like Jellyfin because it lets me keep the noisy bits in a completely different room from my TV.

Can I install this on an android TV? Planning on getting one next month
>>
>>214398909
yes, but don't buy a TV because of the OS. Buy it for the picture quality. You can always buy a box for it later. The built-in TV OS usually sucks, especially on cheaper tvs.
>>
>>214398935
Yup, planning to get one with good pic quality first. Wanted to sideload apps too like Flud to torrent stufd directly to the TV. Would Kodi be a good companion to play the the download media files from Flud
>>
>>214396542
MUCH APPRECIATED SAAR
>>
>>214398980
>Yup, planning to get one with good pic quality first.
1) Don't worry about the TV OS at all. It can have Roku, FireTV, doesn't matter. You can always add an Android TV box.

2) Torrent to your PC and then just stream the files to your TV. Your TV or box won't have enough space for video. You can use Jellyfin, Kodi, or Nova.
>>
>>214399096
>1) Don't worry about the TV OS at all. It can have Roku, FireTV, doesn't matter. You can always add an Android TV box.
I dont want to add any additional hardware to sideload apps

>2) Torrent to your PC and then just stream the files to your TV. Your TV or box won't have enough space for video. You can use Jellyfin, Kodi, or Nova.
I am planning to just get like 256GB or 512GB memory stick and use that as a storage device for all the torrent files and even sideloaded apps if the TV memory isnt suicient
>>
>>214399149
>I dont want to add any additional hardware to sideload apps
Except the hardware on a cheap TV sucks and I doubt you will buy a top of the line TV.

>I am planning to just get like 256GB or 512GB memory stick and use that as a storage device for all the torrent files and even sideloaded apps if the TV memory isnt suicient
USB Sticks die fast when plugged into a TV all the time. Just store stuff on your PC and stream directly to your TV and buy more storage for the PC.
>>
>>214399257
>USB Sticks die fast when plugged into a TV all the time. Just store stuff on your PC and stream directly to your TV and buy more storage for the PC.

I have a potato laptop that will hit a decade in a couple of years. Dont really want to stream it from a PC. I might get a new PC sometime next year if I am able to save up enough money for it though I am considering getting a console first.

I moved to a new place and would like to wait no more than a month to get a new TV. Was hoping to torrent and play movies directly out of this new TV since my laptop has started lagging a lot. I have a limited budget even till next year so this is what I was willing to live with,

I understand your suggestions would provide me a better experience but my circumstances and budget is restricting me for the time being

I have a stick I stick directly into my 10 year old Roku TV after torrenting and it works like a charm. Been doing it for 5+ years. Just codecs could get fucky direct from stick I have to be sure I download x264 not x265. It's a great half measure if you don't want to futz with a server yet
>>
>>214399384
>I have a potato laptop that will hit a decade in a couple of years. Dont really want to stream it from a PC.
Trust me, its easier than using a USB stick. Won't lag no matter how much you stream.

> Was hoping to torrent and play movies directly out of this new TV since my laptop has started lagging a lot.
I've been where you are, pal and it doesn't work well the way you're planning. You're complicating things for no reason. Torrenting to the TV box is a pain. All you have to do is install Jellyfin on the laptop, stream video to the TV and you're done. You can also use SMB to stream video from the laptop. If you want to make your laptop faster, you can just buy an SSD instead of an HDD, and then you can just move the SSD to the new laptop. I used to be near broke and I wish I had just done that back then. Try to consider it.
>>
>>214399491
>I have to be sure I download x264 not x265. It's a great half measure if you don't want to futz with a server yet

Maybe x265 would play with a better media player?
>>
>>214399491
>if you don't want to futz with a server yet
A "server" is just installing Jellyfin on your laptop. Much easier than plugging a USB stick into your TV. I don't know why people plug USB sticks to their TV anymore.
>>
>>214399525
I'm sure the "Roku Media Player" firmware could use an update but like I said it's a 10 year old tv and it still just werx™ even better than nee models because it loads less ads because it's so old kek

Hey numbnuts, I wasn't advocating for any specific software solution, so why are you attempting to correct me? You also clearly have no idea what is paywalled in Plex. The two main things people care about behind the paywall is the automagic remote streaming across the internet, which is fair because it uses their servers, and hardware accelerated transcoding, which is bullshit. However, if you don't need those features, then you can use Plex for free all you want. That said, Jellyfin allows you to use the transcoding abilities of your hardware without having to pay them for the privilege.

Ironically yes these people are some of the most terminally online computer nerds, and they get off on making their lives as technologically complicated as possible.

To me you make it sound like an issue. Yes, you download stuff. It will be an issue if you are storage poor or live in a DMCA raped country. The server does all the downloading and organizing for you.
>>
>>214405604
>>214406844
It's a matter of preference. If you don't care about downloading content to have in your personal collection then you can stream just fine.

>No need to talk down to the guy
You're implying that was my intention. Simply stating a fact that if you don't have storage running your own server will not be for you. Not impossible to do it with like 250 gigs and just delete everything after watching. Just seems like a hassle if you don't automate that as well. Not seeding your torrents is something I don't like either.
