What happened behind the scenes that made the prequels so shit? Was George just egotripping or were other factors involved?
>>
but the prequels are great
>>
They aren't shit, quite similar to the OT actually, in all aspects imaginable. The audience grew up and changed and could no longer stomach 70's-tier cheese. George is a simple autist that only ever did things his way and got carried by John Williams' score.
>>
>>214404680
He lost the ability to direct actors. Simple as.

George Lucas has enough money and influence that he no longer needed to work hard to create what he felt was good enough, and no one else could disagree.
>>
>>214404680
It was mostly the script writing I feel like. Some of the visual effects also needed a few more years in the oven, and just ended up being distracting. You could also argue potential toy and merch sales also poisoned the movies a bit.

Other than that they were fine. Gets way more hate then they deserve, especially in hindsight now with MCU and stuff being a thing. I also don't think they get enough credit for basically reviving the Star Wars brand, especially for the younger audiences. Even if the movies themselves were pretty mediocre, they helped spawn many far greater things. Which is funny considering pretty much the opposite happened with nu-Wars.

>quite similar to the OT actually, in all aspects imaginable.

There's isn't a character like Binks in the OT, and there isn't a cool character like Han in the PT. There is no child protagonists in the OT.
>>
>What parts of "Star Wars" was great?
>Did George Lucas have direct influence on those parts?
The answer is no. What made each movie great, or terrible, had little to do with George Lucas.
>>
>>214404997

C3P0/R2D2 were the annoying comic relief characters for women and children in the OT. Jango Fett. Anything else?
>>
>>214404680
Too much easy access to CGI/special effects and the success of the OT meaning nobody had the balls to go "George this is fucking ridiculous." and rein in some of the more absurd excesses and random ideas Lucas had.

>ughhhh this series that (still gets talked about constantly 25 years later), what a failure right guys?
>the thing we all talk about?
>more than the original trilogy even, we just talk about this?
>on all forms of social media?
>and emulate and meme and internalize into our entire cultural subconscious?
>shame it was such a failure right? what went wrong?
>>
The prequel discourse was quickly sabotaged by pathetic manbabbies who flipped when George didn't respect their gay headcanon which muddied the water and made it impossible to discuss them sensibly for about 20 years.
>>
Why was the original trilogy better than the prequels behind the scenes
>>
>>214405071
>Too much easy access to CGI/special effects
They invented how we work with cgi. It wasn't easy.
>>
>>214404702
Hello sar
>>
>>214405769
so what? Prequel CGI ended up look like shit. and now moden cgi looks like trash as well.
>>
>>214405071
You fuckwad, Prequels use more practical effects than all the OT combined. How about you read the making of books instead of just making shit up faggot
>>
>>214404680
lazy half-assed scripts where george just slopped between the set pieces he cared about like the chariot race
>>
>>214404997
>There's isn't a character like Binks in the OT,
Warwick Davis
>and there isn't a cool character like Han in the PT.
Obi wan. Jango. Maul.
>There is no child protagonists in the OT.
Warwick Davis. R2. Mr. power converters crybaby.

Prequel haters proving once again to be retarded nostalgia faggots.
>>
>>214405035
False equivalence. Even if you really found Threepio as irritating as Binks (which I doubt you did), an undeniable difference is that Threepio is a side character whereas Binks is one of the protagonists of TPM and he gets much more screentime. Binks even becomes a member of the senate and a major historical figure.
>>
>>214404680
the scripts are pretty bad and lucas isn't a very good director, to be fair to him he knows he isn't and did approach some big names to direct but they turned it down so he was stuck doing it himself.
>>
>>214405731
OT was made by a bunch of indie autists. The various ILM documentaries go into greater detail, but TL;DR George was given a stack of money after American Grafitti and found a bunch of talented hobbyists who were later replaced by CGI.
>>
>>214404727
He never had it. Harrison and the others often talk about how awful and cryptic his directions were. Kershner made Luke's interactions with Yoda convincing because he actually studied acting and liked people for starters.
>>
>>214406012
And everything was a fucking greenscreen CGI slopfest. Fuck off with your "bawwwww but that is le practical effect". I did see the behind the scenes shit. You know what they did? Had actors read some dialogue in front of a fucking greenscreen.
>>
>>214406889
That was how they also did a ton of the OT you megaretard. Green screens and matte paintings. My ass you've seen the behind the scenes DVD content, let alone the development books
>>
>>214404680
theyre pretty good despite the obvious (and talked to death) goofy bits like JarJar's entire existence and forced dialogue by Hayden C. from time to time

Phantom is my fav and not only because it was my first and my first VHS tape for the new TV allowing many repeats while at Anakin's age. Clone Wars was patchy-awesome with a lot of issues and some CGI and choreography that has aged poorly compared to significantly improved EpIII just a couple years later. Ep3 is one of the least interesting plot developments to me in the hexology that's told but it was a spectacular film to see in theaters with all the boys at the last height of theater engagement and IRL socializing-for-kino culture. Vividly impressive effects for most viewers at the time and a satisfying wrapup for old fans as well as the new gen who may have left the show eager to torrent the old EpIV.

And once I got older and realized Star Wars in general is not some holy article of culture but simply an entertaining sci-fi series that inspired many, developed the industry, and was widely beloved by young and old. Realizing this it becomes easy to give comparing them in depth a rest and enjoy any of them for a rewatch as much as the next

>but the prequels are great

fpbp
>>
>>214404680
Lucas had no choice but to direct and write on his own because anyone he asked rejected it.
He wanted Spielberg to direct, but he insisted Lucas should do it.
>>
>>214404680
prequels were quality films, they didn't take themselves too serious which is why the memes were flowing out of every scene
>>
>quality films
>>
"Quality films," said Gigachad, much to the annoyance of several virgins present.
>>
>>214407756
Lucas would have probably henpecked him
>>
>>214404680
He tried to get several people to direct them instead of him and they all turned him down. If just one of them had said yes, there would have been a voice of dissent to reign George in. By the time of Revenge of the Sith I remember reading he had other people working on the dialog, something he knows he is weak in.

It didn't have people with the balls to outright refuse to say Lucas' shitty dialogue. Mark Hamill has a video all about how he just plain refused to say one of Lucas' lines.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dmm4UisVyts

Additionally, the stupid Lucas dialogue that did make it into the OT was mostly being spoken by great actors like Peter Cushing and Alec Guinness, who could make anything sound good.

>>214406651
>Warwick Davis and R2
Has no lines.

>Obi-Wan.
Not cool, mostly a nagging bitch.

>Jango
Cool, but a villain with like 5 lines of dialogue.

>>214407887
>>214408421
>"Quality films," said Pajeet, slurping down every last nugget of George Lucas' shit.

>memes were flowing out of every scene
Hayden Christiansen's lines became memes because they were fucking bad.

This. It's the reason Howard said Willow it's his least personal film, since Lucas pretty much managed the entire thing and didn't let him have creative liberties.
>>
>>214410419
Wow, if a single iota of that chemistry had made it onto the screen then Anakin/Padme might not be one of the shittiest romances in movie history.
