I almost never post on /tv/. Where do people stand on Star Trek TNG vs DS9 and is it strange to think DS9 is a better show?
>>214409458/tv/ is a land of mallfags
>>214409458Ds9 is the better show, so its not strange to think that
I like TNG as much as I do DS9 but I think DS9 is more rewatchable.
>>214409458DS9 has fewer embarrassing episodes and was more professional in general but TNG obviously had vastly higher peaks.
>>214409458TNG started horribly and ended magnificently, and all and all I would say it is the most solidly-built single series of 'Trek. DS9 started on more even ground, had a brilliant mid-point, then fell off a cliff in quality for the final season. But at least it didn't get dragged on for twenty additional years in a series of mediocre to bad movies and a three-season spinoff where the only good part is the season trying to correct all the mistakes of its previous two thirds plus said movies. Then again I watched DS9 more recently so I might just remember it better.
>>214409458They're fundamentally different types of shows. TNG is a old-school "scenario of the week" sci fi show with charscters that stay essentially the same. DS9 is a show with a long term plot that spends much more time on character interactions snd development than on scenarios. They're both very good at what they're trying to do, but since they're trying to do different things it's completely reasonable people who value one type of show over another will prefer one show over the other regardless of specific critiques of the shows themselves.I've always preferred DS9 but that's mainly because I like the cast more than TNG. But DS9 was more about the cast than TNG was. I think episode-plots wise TNG is generally better, since the stories were more self contained and didn't get bogged down by previous bad decisions like DS9 did.Civil Defense is the best episode of any Star Trek show.
>>214409708For me? In The Pale Moonlight.
It's been a long time since I watched either, but I think they're equal, which in itself is an impressive achievement for DS9.VOY is also underrated.
>>214409458They're both fantastic shows. I think I enjoy rewatching DS9 more though
>>214409458TNG has my eternal respect for essentially rebooting Trek and creating the golden era of Trek, but I still think DS9 is better. DS9 could not exist without standing on TNG's shoulders though. DS9 benefits heavily from the more continuous story and stronger worldbuilding. This not only makes the arcs more interesting but even the one off episodes. In my rewatches of trek I find myself watching DS9 far more than TNG or Voyager, there are simply far more rewatchable episodes, or I just end up watching the whole Dominion War arc again for the tenth time.
>>214409458Voyager is the most comfy, because they're all by their lonesome.
>>214409458I really liked DS9's tone. Great example of how to make a more serious show without going against the Star Trek DNA.
>>214410687Sisko felt more professional and far less unhinged with the hair. I'd let that Sisko watch my kid for a few hours. Not bald Sisko. He'd probably sacrifice the child to the prophets and say that it was a transporter accident to cover it up.
I much prefer DS9 but the problem with its semi-serialised approach is that when something shit is introduced, it might be sticking around for a long time. The loathsome Vic Fontaine became a permanent tumour attached to the later episodes. At least I can skip that garbage when I watch it today.
>>214410687It's jarring to watch the first couple seasons. He looks like a bit of a dweeb without the facial hair.>>214411708>The loathsome Vic Fontaine became a permanent tumour attached to the later episodesAlso this.
>>214409458She gon' get beamed.
>>214409458way too much terrible romance drama
DS9 has aged much better
>>214409458I like them both equally but DS9 has a certain comfiness to it.
>>214409458TNG is the better show but somehow DS9 seems better the first time you see it. Then you rewatch it and realize that it's borderline shit at times while being brilliant sometimes. TNG is just more consistent, more timeless. DS9 and VOY are both personal tastes of inconsistency.
I love the characters in DS9 so much more. When I watch TNG I'm more interested in the situation but when I watch DS9 I can enjoy the characters even when they're doing mundane shit. They're just so fun. except Jadzia Dax
>>214412196>except Jadzia DaxThis.
>ends the war by having goo sex with the enemy leader
>>214412263What's funny is that she's exactly like that in real life too
DS9 had better characters but TNG is the better show.
>>214409458I prefer TNG. DS9 is arguably a more consistent show but I actually think the serialized elements run off a cliff in season 7 and waste a lot of the premise. Much of the Dominion War story falls flat. I love both though.
>>214409458i prefer ds9 but they're roughly equal. tng has a shit season 1 (and half of season 2), and ds9 has a shit season 7 (and half of season 1).
>>214411708Vic Fontaine was one of the best parts of DS9.Admit it. DS9 sucked. None of the main cast were interesting. The were all continuously outshined by tertiatry characters.
>>214413310>outshined by tertiatry charactersThat only applies of Garak, and DS9 did not suck.
My issue with the dominion arc is that the jem hadar are boring villains. Just mindless goons that are supposed to be super soldiers but can still be knocked out immediately with one of those trek-fu chops to the back of the head
>>214413477>That only applies of Garakexcuse me?
i like tng and ds9 for different reasons they feel like good companion shows
>>214413054tng has a shit season 7 aswell theres just a few gems in it
>>214409556Mostly because DS9 has character arcs. You can see character evolving, basically, every character grows. In TNG, only Picard, Data, and Geordi actually change, and even those evolutions are extremely subtle.Meanwhile, Riker, Troi, Beverly, and Worf are exactly the same in the final episodes as they were in the first.
>>214413634That's not true!Riker got a beard.
I enjoy Kai Winn, Dukat, Damar and Weyoun more than Garak. I like Garak most when he's murdering people
>>214413482The Jem'Hadar who put Bashir to work in Hippocratic Oath. The Jem'Hadar who killed Weyoun in To the Death. The Jem'Hadar who yielded to Worf in By Inferno's Light. The Jem'Hadar who chose a suicide mission in Rocks and Shoals. All worthy of eternal memory.
>>214413482well they're actually not mindless. there's several episodes that prove this.
>>214409603TNG starts great then falls off as cast and crew relax and revel in their newfound fame.DS9 just gets better and better throughout.
DS9 was underrated but now it's overrated. Eventually I hope it'll be justly rated.
Ds9 is for people that think they want to watch Star Trek but actually are seeking the cozy familiarity of a sitcom. Simpletons.
>>214414026Season 7 DS9 is "better and better"?
>>214414026>TNG starts great>DS9 just gets better and betterBoth of these are wrong.
>>214413983As a DS9 fan I got second hand embarrassment from reading this poor attempt at humor
it's DS9 for me. Quite possibly my favorite show ever
The continuity and serialization on ds9 make it for better rewatching today but tng has about a dozen self contained episodes way better than ds9.
>>214409556>I like TNG as much as I doyeah, that's generally how that works
>>214415620Anon, I...>I like TNG as much as I do DS9>but I think DS9 is more rewatchable.
>>214411487Its perfect though. At that point he's been the captain of the station for a while, and has since grown jaded with certain things while fighting with jem'hadar, vorta snakes, cardassian funposters, and Eddington (who was right btw)
>>214411331This might be the most level headed and correct post on /tv/
DS9 is at its best before they get the grey uniforms.
>>214414026>TNG starts greatThe first three seasons are unwatchable. What are you talking about?
>>214416137TNG's third season is the best season of the show.
