i don't mind if a guy plays his gamegear or whatever while he's waiting for the elevator to arrive to talk about the war plans. that's not cutting to a different film for 40 minutes to do a completely unrelated racing story with all the racing movie tropes

As a hater of the prequels, I enjoyed the pod racing scene quite a bit.

TPM would be better if it was a sports movie focusing on the podrace tournament, the personalities involved, the rivalries that make it matter, and the money men like Jabba who pull the strings from above.

Of course, you'd have to get rid of Little Annie and some of the more cartoonish racers like Ben Quadinaros.

I dunno, I think Lucas probably had his heart behind this part. He comes from car culture, his earlier movies have car/racing focuses, and even the trench run in star wars is a glorified game of chicken/drag race. Yes, release the thing at the right time is like dambusters but dambusters wasn't in no boxed in quarter mile track.
So I think he wanted to put this on the screen for the right reasons but I dunno there's just something annoying about it. 'Baby stuff' like the commentators, cartoony villain antics, Anakin.
The aesthetic of the pod race sequence is good, the 'plot' of it is too childish
