You can have a cynical sitcom with asshole characters (Seinfeld, It's Always Sunny) or you can have a wholesome sitcom with wholesome characters (Friends, Modern Family). You can't make a wholesome sitcome with asshole characters and that's essentially what HIMYM is. It's in this weird place where you're supposed to root for these guys when they're pretty much assholes through and through.
