Once he locked in the loop, he probably got red shirted by being around John a couple years earlier.

there was no john conner in the original timeline, and without him the humans lose the war. as a last ditch effort the humans sent reese back in time to try to warn humanity of judgement day but he fails, but also happens to fuck sarah conner. in that future, john conner leads the humans to victory. the machines send one of their own into the past as a last ditch effort to kill john conner before he's born. sarah survives because kyle reese is with her, but they tell the future humans that skynet also sent a machine back in time. from then on they are stuck in the timeloop because both sides know each others actions.

In the original timeline Skynet wins but it's unable to survive in a world without any humans, so it's doomed. It sends back the last surviving human with instructions for how to survive a war against Skynet. In the next iteration humans survive for long enough that Skynet realizes it needs to keep them around, but this time they manage to beat Skynet.

The death camps it sets up are suppposed to be places where it tries to find the right people to send back and to get intelligence on the past for time travel missions.

I don't care what James Cameron says, I like to think that the original timeline was Terminator 1. However Kyle Reese was not John's father. That's why John turned out to be such a badass and once Kyle introduced his weak jeans John kept getting worse and worse
