Because Johns fancies himself a heroic lawbringer to Riddick's depraved criminal when really he was no better than Riddick. Actually he's worse because Riddick eventually comes around and realizes he can be better men.

This scene didn't make sense because he could have abandoned them way before, he really didn't need to escort them through the desert.
