I'm thinking of writing a novella or screenplay about me epic liminal spaces deadmall 90s nostalgia where some hacker guy in an urban wasteland reminisces about the manic pixie dream girl he knew before she ODd on drugs and he was in love with her, so he's trying to steal some corporate nanotech to basically bring her back to life, except when he does after multiple missions impossible sequences to get the components, he realizes she's actually an annoying bitch and his nostalgia is a load of bullshit. He kills himself, and she ends up becoming a whore hooked on the latest OnlyFans VR bullshit. I feel like I just want to write it because I think about an old oneitis who I literally fell for because she reminded me of my childhood and now a few years later I have no fucking idea why I liked her. And I am miserable so I think about le epic 90s nostalgia to cope, except I just went a week without a phone waiting for a replacement part to fix it myself like a Jeet, and it made me realize it's irreversible to go back to that life at all.

Horror tends to have it's own rules but it helps to have an idea what a normal film even looks like. I sat down and have been mapping a bunch of films and that helps too. I think The Evil Dead is basically perfect as a possession template.

Reading a biography of Yeats to prepare for my Death of Stalin-esque comedic "biopic" of his later life. Visual aesthetics are harder to carry across in a novel and the deadmall vaporwave aesthetic is an important part of it to me. So a screenplay is easier / better in that regard. But at the same time a novella or just prose in general feels more "pure" to me as artistic expression. So I don't know what to focus on.

Wrote a feature and got turned down for a grant. Shooting a condensed short of the feature this Fall and will use that to pitch for a grant again.

I wrote the feature to be fairly budget conscious, so on the side I like to write other films that aren't feasible but are still fun to work on.

Wrote a sequel to the 80s Blob film where the Blob tears a plane in half and the 2 blobs combine into a mega blob at the end of the film.

Wrote a Spiderman movie called Spiderman: Retirement Home about Peter Parker moving into a retirement home and having to figure out who is hypnotizing the elderly/retirees.

I wrote a slasher film script that I later decided was pure ass, so nothing will one of that. I also had a body horror script that cannot be made because I don't have the budget for the animatronic (I even went to a convention and got some quotes, you know what a fucking puppet costs?) but at this point I think it's better to write for fun. Working on a sort of Sword and Sorcery script just for pleasure now. I still have fantasies of doing a ultra low budget horror flick but I need to wait for inspiration to strike, and anyway I've never filmed shit in my life so it's just a fantasy to round up some community college students and make them act - I'd definitely fuck it up. Can you imagine making a movie though? How fucking cool. Throw that shit on Tubi or Hulu. They'll take anything. I ain't going to no festival.

I wrote a script about some mob guy who's assassin and he like meets a girl on a wedding. Turns out she's married but he hits her husband killed and they get married. Trouble is he's a mob and she's also a hitman, so when she gets contract on killing her new husband she tells him straight on, and then it becomes a duel, knife vs gun, she misses and he kills her. Then he goes back and marries the mob boss daughter. I'm thinking I'm gonna star my own daughter as own of the characters and her old boyfriend as the hitman.

A movie starring a young Greek man living in poverty. The first half of the movie would be about how he and his family is poor due to the generational trauma of Greek being colonized by Turks 200 years ago. There would be flashbacks to those times, depicting Muslim Turks raping Greek women, forcing Greeks to convert to Islam, etc. Then the protagonist gets a lucky break - he saves a tourist from drowning, and the tourist turns out to be a wealthy Russian businessman who rewards him with enough money to fulfil his dream - move to America and enroll in college.

In the second half of the film, he struggles to adapt to life in America. His Jewish history professor assigns his class to write an essay about colonialism. He writes a paper about the Ottoman colonization of Greece, and his professor fails him and tells him that only whites can be colonizers. Later, while walking alone, a Jewish Antifa student attempt to assault him for the paper. The assailant is portrayed as short, ugly, and scrawny, and he kicks the shit out of them. He swallows his pride and writes some paper he doesn't care about and passes his history class, along with all others. While walking alone again, he is ambushed, sucker punched and killed by a black man who was paid off by Antifa. At the black mans trial for murder, his Jewish lawyer attempts to get a lenient sentence by claiming that his client was suffering from generational trauma caused by slavery. The prosecution then brings in some surprise testimony from the murdered Greeks father, who was paid to be flown to the trail by the Russian businessman from earlier. The father tells of his sons life in detail, including his family's history of oppression. The jury is moved and convicts the black man of first degree murder and life in prison. The black man then snitches on the Jewish Antifa kid who paid him. The movie ends with the execution of the two men, found guilty of murder.

Horror/thriller.
I've made 2 crime dramas. The second one has done alright, gearing up for a vod release soonish, and I think I've learnt enough to make something great.
But I only really realised/acknowledged right before shooting the second one that the only way "in" for truly indie films is to make a horror film. Yes and no. When talking about features, the big festivals want premieres. It's impossible enough to get into cannes. Getting into cannes with a film that's already premiered isn't even a consideration. Tiff you technically have a chance. But not at this level. Tiff will only take a film that's gotten buzz somewhere like Cannes or Venice. Not a film that's gotten a good review at Smalltown Beer & Cider Arts Festival.
The midtier fesetivals absolutely care a lot about that sort of thing though.
It's a really messy world, festivals. Largely pointless. A lot of ways to burn money. It depends what you're going for really.

I basically just outline the major events and main characters in the story and i never really feel like altering them, i just go writing chapter by chapter, and if i have new ideas i can go back, revise the full text and introduce new things, maybe even create an entire chapter i hadn't planned out.

See this is it. I'm semi confident that I can deliver something genuinely great. I just worry that it won't be risky enough for them. They really reject 'mainstream' films. And a lot of the time that translates to 'films general audiences would actually enjoy' (not always, there are loads of cannes films I love). I'm not going to risk something overly arthouse for the sake of trying to get in, knowing that if it didn't I'd have a film that would basically be forgotten within weeks.
Like I'd much rather make The Departed than You Were Never Really Here. Ah well, see what happens.

I find that often, to finish a script, at some point you have to put your foot down and stop toiling with alternate paths and just commit to events playing out in a certain way. And that way can be arbitrarily picked if you find yourself struggling to make a decision.
And often that leads to those alternate ideas resurfacing in whatever I write next. I've got a short film where a character asks a sarcastic question and the other responds with "no" followed by a short threat. I've got a feature where a character asks the same question and the other responds with "yes" followed by a monologue.
It's a fun reference for people who do watch my stuff, and it lets me explore different ideas without getting stuck.

nta but i can tell you from my own indie experience that when you're working with limited resources that means limited budget, limited crew, and limited cast. so more often than not people are pulling double duty, whether it means an actor is also a gaffer or the writer is also the director and maybe producer. but i will tell you this, nobody just gets up and makes movies. all directors started with making shorts before moving onto features. except DDL's son but then again he's not actually directing anemone, his name is just on the sheet.

I wrote a script first, after several years experience making shorts.
Then I used a shitty casting service and facebook to find some actors who I paid very little, but something. I had a couple of friends show up to help some scenes. But I mostly acted as a one-man-band.
I handled camera. Lights were set up beforehand. Nothing extreme. Tended to go with whatever was already in the room with some strategic smaller lights just to keep exposure on faces when needed. Once or twice I had to use a bigger light for night shots.
Sound was handled with lav mics, though I don't use them very much anymore. Investing in 32 bit float recorders, I can now just place a mic near to the actors and leave it alone for the scene which saves a ton of time and effort for better results.
First film is noticeably low-budget. I think it looks really nice at times and hits high notes but it's inconsistent and parts of it probably scream amateurish.
Second film has done alright and won a couple of awards on the festival circuit. Nothing major but enough that I'm quite confident it will do well when I finally get it distributed.
The most important thing I've learnt in the last 5 years is not to make a film to impress critics/pseuds. Honestly chasing money isn't the bad thing that people make it out to be. There's nothing wrong with wanting to make a film that normal people like and want to watch. And wanting that film to do well enough that it lets you make another film isn't something to be ashamed of.

i didn't say it was good, i said it was good enough to catch someone's attention, which is the goal of a logline.

yeah it should be under 50 words and two sentences max, and it is. anon's logline is too short and not attention-grabbing, and when a producer asks "is this a haunted house movie" and anon says yes, the producer will ask what makes it different from the other 401 haunted house movies that already exist, and if anon's story is as bland as the logline then the producer will say "kthxbai" and move onto the next pitch.

It's a logline of course it is vague, it cannot contain the story. It is only useful to decide if you look at the script or not. "Save his soul" is the stakes, it may be metaphorical or not. I don't know I didn't write the script, the anon had some points about improving the other anon's logline.

That the logline can be easily tied to the film doesn't change that a logline will be somewhat vague. I wrote my logline knowing full well it was unique because it is mix of genres so I made it simple and to the point; if you are writing a more generic story, then I guess you could go with a more flowery style, that way you are presenting yourself as a writer.
