Pretty good, I liked it. A horror movie that doesn't try to be about depression or have some awkward "deep meaning" is a breath of fresh air. However, there are a few inconsistencies:
>kids and parents remain in a half-comatose state but Josh Brolin is fine
>they should've set the movie in late 90s at least, because in the current year's surveillance state these kids would be on a thousand different cameras all the way from their homes to the witch house from 10 different angles
>magic is inconsistent, but I guess it's a nitpicking

>>214472363
The film implies that the longer the witch's victims remains under her spell, the more profound & lasting the neurological damage. This checks: the parents are vegetables, the kids are 'just beginning to speak again', and Brolin was fine.

I agree about the cameras, but don't recall any inconsistency with magic that stood out to me. Overall I'd say this was kino.

I believe the cops/feds came to the same conclusion that Brolin's character had with tracking the kids all running in the same direction and that it is feasible for their to cameras near the witch house, not everyone/street is going to have ring cameras. The feds did show up and search the place but the witch hid the kids in the woods when they did.

The parents were under the spell for over a month, the kids for a month, Josh Brolin was only under for like 5 minutes. Also the vvitch was siphoning energy from the parents and the kids, she was just controlling Josh Brolin.

I thought it was pretty fucking lame. The setup sounds great, kids all getting up and disappearing in the middle of the night, but it's ruined by having it happen in the first five minutes while a little girl narrator (dispelling what should be horrific for the adults/parents) gives you an exposition dump. I knew the film would disappoint from that point on.

I appreciate that the film doesn't follow a regular A-to-B narrative structure and is trying something different, but I don't think it made the film better. If anything, it was a contrivance that made the film worse, since it adds bloat; the slaggy alcoholic teacher, the useless cop, and the junkie should all be side characters in Josh Brolin's story rather than existing as primary characters. The narrative jumping also doesn't provide any interesting revelations, making it largely redundant in my view.

Then there's the clown villain. I guess I get what they were going for with her, but she's simply not scary, and her non-clown appearance isn't horrific enough to amplify the horror of her comic attempts to look normal. And why she appears on the ceiling and shit, I don't fucking know. I guess 'cause they needed scares of some kind (which were in short supply).

Anyway, rant over. I need something to eat. Thanks for reading my blog.
>>
i just watched it like 5 minutes ago, this seems one of the most pointless movies ive ever watched, it has no real suspense or payoff.
>>
>>214472534
you think a guy from a sketch comedy show was being funny unintentionally?
>>
>>214472363
I just watched it. Amazing movie, perfect anount of silly and creepy. All these probably got answered but heres my take
>kids and parents remain in a half-comatose state but Josh Brolin is fine
The amount of time under the spell is probably important. They have been getting drained and in a low power mode for a month.
>they should've set the movie in late 90s at least, because in the current year's surveillance state these kids would be on a thousand different cameras all the way from their homes to the witch house from 10 different angles
Small towns arent surveillance states. Middle of the night you might pick stuff up but it looks like they traveled through the woods which would make it harder. A mild stretch at most.
>magic is inconsistent, but I guess it's a nitpicking
Im not sure where it was inconsistent
>>
>>214472363
The scene when she's sleeping in her car and the mom comes out is excellent.
>>
>>214472363
>but Josh Brolin is fine
Something special is going on with Josh in particular because he's the one who had the visionary dream with the gun and the time the kids all left. He has some level of psychic fortification happening there.
>>
>>214481046
>tfw no drunk upside down mouth gf
>>
>>214472363
It was good but it's a little overrated, I think just due to the fact that it's not facing a whole lot of competition. A movie like this coming out 20, even 10 years ago, wouldn't have close to the level of success this one did. It's like a light 7/10 or strong 6/10, but it's being talked about like a 8/10. It works well as a mystery/investigation story and the Rashomon structure is a good fit for that.
There are some inconsistencies as far as what you mentioned with the cameras and some other things anons mentioned itt, but I was willing to suspend my disbelief because the story was engaging.
>kids and parents remain in a half-comatose state but Josh Brolin is fine
As other anons have said, I also believe this is due to the length of the possession resulting in a longer after-effect.
>>
Why are witches so powerful
>>
>>214477566
>update
Bitch, sympathetic magic has been a thing since forever. People would burn their fingernails fearing witches and sorcerers would get a hold of them to use in spells and curses against you.
>>
>>214481747
Because they're cunts and they dgaf so they engage in the most heinous acts, which makes them op. Essentially they're women but with actual supernatural powers instead of just social power.
>>
I can't suspend my disbelief that the kids were at the house of the sole survivor and yet no one linked it. Sure they did their check but oh she somehow sends the kids running without them being seen s 2nd time. Too silly. Needed more tension. As usual brolin was great.
>>
>>214472363
>>214474032
Ya the kids and parents had been awake that whole time so their minds are mush. Kids are able to recover over time because they have resilient kid brains. Makes sense to me

I just finished it. One of the best horror movies ever ever seen and one of the best movies overall I've seen in a few years at least. I love the reveal of the antagonist and how if you're familiar with this stuff at all you could identify what was happening pretty early. It was nice that they carried it all the way through instead of making it about psychosis or some dumb shit. Id give it a 9/10
>>
>>214478568
>>214478577
I completely disagree. With her reveal and the secretary and principles reaction and then Alex's backstory you got a feel for just how evil she is. And the clown imagery is a good homage. Witchcraft and demonic possession go hand in hand. There are theories that say the nephilim had the appearance of what we know as clowns. And this all works together
>>
It kinda sucked, but I liked it overall

thats pretty fuckin creepy, I didn't know that about the nephilim.
The movie had a lot of real world witch craft themes about it as well as the protagonists having prophetic dreams. It was kind of realistic in that approach.
Also it's really funny OP was saying he found some inconsistencies but didn't have any issue with the old woman doing a fucking marathon sprint near the end of the movie. Hilarious, but I also thought it was a 'feel good' scene.

>>
>>214472363
Brolin was in a trance for less than 15 mins, everyone else was under control for about a month or so. He likely wasn't brain damage as a result.

I agree with 90s stance, Ring is pretty common now a days and there were houses leading to the main one. I don't see the inconsistent magic though.

I do find the police work in this movie to be laughably bad but I could dismiss it as just a bad police force for that area. But they did cooperate with the FBI, but then again the FBI performance under the leadership of a Pajeet has been awful too so I guess it fits.
>>
>>214481743
>It works well as a mystery/investigation story and the Rashomon structure is a good fit for that.
You don't know what a Rashomon structure is if you think it applies to this movie. Anyhow, there's barely mystery and what mystery there is is revealed halfway through the movie.

>they should've set the movie in late 90s at least, because in the current year's surveillance state these kids would be on a thousand different cameras all the way from their homes to the witch house from 10 different angles
Smaller rural towns aren't saturated with cameras either, but either approach would require more creativity than any of these current day hack writers possess.

Just watched the movie thanks to this thread, so not trying to bust your balls. It was entertaining right up until the last 45 seconds, where it just... Kinda.. Ended. I was hoping they'd at least show the other aunt as a Glinda the Good VVitch type figure
Tracking the perspective/narrative of each major character while still advancing the timeline was a near perfect format for this story
Wasn't really scary but was intriguing. I guess the bad aunt witch was trying to... Siphon the life force from the parents, then kids? I don't get why she needed to do it to her family though.

Listen, the guy might have called this film "An introduction to Keynisian principles based on the economic development of East South Asia in the 18th century" and it still would have nothing to do with economics, East South Asia or the 18th century.
If an author can't get his point across the audience isn't "bad" at watching his film, he was bad at making it
>>
>>214485283
>Dude every movie in which kids dissapear is about school shootings
Nice strawman, but no. Every movie in which the title is called weapons, school kids disappear, and literal weapons appear in the sky, are about school shootings.
>>
>>214485309
The weapon had fuckall to do with the rest of the film and neither had the title.

Hey retard, I already agreed that the movie was shit and failed at it's message. I'm just telling you what it's about.
>>
>>214485366

Intent doesn't matter. Reception does.
>>
>>214485397
Well I'm not the fucking writer am I? Take it up with him, I'm sure you can email him or something.
>>
>>214472363
All these points are stupid nitpicks.

Josh Brolin was fine because he was only in a comatose state for about 5 minutes. The parents were in that state the longest so their brains were completely scrambled. The kids were in that state for a shorter amount of time and their brains were less developed so some of them were able to snap out of it.

Setting this movie in the 90s would force you to change the entire script because the entire plot revolving around Brolin's character involves the RING cameras. So it wouldn't work.

Not sure what part about the magic if inconsistent without any examples, but i also imagine you would've given one if you could, but you can't.
>>
>>214485418
Judging from this film, any email I write him will probably be the best, most coherent thing he ever read in his sad life.
That being said, claiming the film was about school shootings is mental when nothing in the film conveys that in a way a sane person would understand
>>
>>214485437
>when nothing in the film conveys that in a way a sane person would understand
I'm not trying to be rude, but please watch more films. There are an infinite amount of movies with subtler messages. Just because they go over audiences heads (or they fail to reach anyone) doesn't mean they don't exist.
>>
>>214485468
>Just because they go over audiences heads (or they fail to reach anyone) doesn't mean they don't exist.
I beg to differ. Art (if you want to call this film by that word) lives with its reception. For better or worse, it's society that determines what it means.
Sure, that may change over time and the taste of the audience but I highly doubt that 15 years down the road, everyone will just praise this film for its great subtext.

It didn't bother me that Archer was freed from the spell when the witch died. It bothered me that Alex' parents and the children weren't. Why? It was the same magic and the same principle.
>>
>>214488910
I think it's implied that because they were under the spell for longer, it will take them longer to come out of it. the le spooky girl narrator says something like "some of them even started to talk". so they will go back to normal, it will just take longer.
>>
>>214488442
I'm getting a deja vu feeling with this ending scene. somehow I remember some other movie doing this same thing before... or it it just a mandela effect
>>
>>214488966
I don't know. Also Alex should have looked for other branches and dropped them in a pot or bowl of water. (He had observed that that stops the spell earlier.)

Another thing bothered me at night. Why did Gladys do all that? She said she "might get better" if she locked all the children in the basement. But then she didn't look any better when she had done that.

Plus the principal's boyfriend was really stupid. The principal caught on to the weird vibes when Gladys was outside his door and didn't want to let her in. It was his gay boyfriend who said "nonsense" and brought her into the house. (And he died for his mistake.)
James was smarter. He ran when he saw Gladys. But he was dumb enough to return to the police station to "collect his $50,000 reward".

Anyway, I still think it was a good movie despite its inconsistencies.

Retarded speedwatching chud. The movie "Barbarian" is called "Barbarian" because it is set in a house on 467 Barbary Street or something like that. That means that the characters who live there are literal Barbarians.

I reckon that when you're messing with witchcraft, the balance is that people close to it feel the effects. Josh Brolin is a very grounded guy, so the symbolism shown to him is what he would understand. The witch is a gun, the puppets are her bullets. Kinda loose, and if you take away the dreams from the film nothing really changes...
>>214489611
You could make the argument that this is Josh's assumption of the situation, the missing kids are connected to this kind of violence, but this certainly isn't the message Cregger is trying to convey. The main themes are of abuse and addiction.
Still kino tho

Josh Brolin being fine isnt an inconsistency at all. The explanation is pretty evidently that the longer the person remains under the spell that the more "lifeforce" or whatever is sucked out of them to the old bitch. Josh Brolin was only taken over for a few minutes so it makes sense that he wouldnt be as affected as the kids or the parents who were being fed upon for weeks. And the parents seem to be less able to recover than the kids since they were under for longer. You are a fucking retard fuck you you piece of shit

It was Josh Brolin's brain's interpretation of some weird magical psychic interference he was picking up on in his dream. The witch probably had the weaponisation of her thralls on her mind and Josh Brolin's brain interpreted that vaguely as a gun.

gladys has some sort of mind control/manipulation aura. it's how she convinced the parents she was related and to stay at their house. and how the police/school bought the "dad had a stroke" story, and maybe even why the ching's husband let her in the house. I think this is reinforced with the astral projection scenes and she's able to fuck with justines, archers, and the druggies heads by appearing telepathically

All this shit is what we see on FOX or CNN after a school shooting. Cregger said he didn't write a lot of deliberate jokes in the movie and he's surprised people found the movie funny. Most apparent one he could think of was Brolin waking up from the dream. Which I thought was weird cause my theater was crying of laughter throughout the movie, even on parts that were supposed to be scary like the exorcist 3 door scene homage. The camera cuts were just so comedic, like this scene webm related, the parents don't actually look terrifying. I think other directors could do a better job at instilling you with dread in a scene like this but it comes off as funny.

I like WKUK and Zach as a person but this movie was a 5/10 at best.

The first half really didn’t mean anything at all. The mystery is very weak and the solution to the mystery is dumb. Not to mention if you’re just going to have a random guy stumble in on the answer there really isn’t anything to solve.
The entire reason you would follow the aftermath first is if you want to explore the impact the disappearance had on the town, but for the most part everybody just moved on. School’s still open, stores are open etc. The only difference is one or two characters are having a bad time, and that’s it.
Alex’s perspective was the most interesting and the whole movie should have been about that. It had some fun elements of anxiety that films like Mother thrive on, but it was so short because by that point rhe movie is half over. And then in the end it doesn’t even explore how the finale would affect Alex, after what he saw and did it’s effect on him should be the note to end on but it’s not.

All in all, if you cut out the mystery and told it linearly, this is just a Goosebumps plot for adults

Okay, maybe not Rashomon because they don't contradict, but going over the same events and timeline from the perspective of a different character revealing new information every time, whatever that's called, I thought it was interesting. I'm not saying it's the greatest mystery story ever put on film, again, it's like a 6 or 7/10, but it kept me engaged past the halfway mark. It's really only the Alex chapter where it became less interesting to me and it's just tying up loose ends then devolves into action slapstick shlock, which I didn't think was funny or scary or worked that well. I guess it was an okay action scene is the best you could say about it, it wasn't a complete flatline.
>>
>>214494622
>What was the AR15 in the sky all about? Seemed completely random.
I think it ties in with the film's title, and how the witch weaponizes people. The AR 15 turns into a clock showing 2:17 on it, the time the kids are "turned into weapons."
>>
>>214494647
Honestly, it was a little similar to Longlegs. Invent a scary character and then write a story around that character but don't really put a lot of thought into it and just have them be ambiguously spooky.
>>
>>214494808
When are the kids used weapons again? I must have forgotten.

Also didn’t the director say it didn’t mean anything. It was just added because he thought it was cool and each viewers head cannon for the scene was most important
>>
>>214494808
I mean their main purpose seemed to be her sucking the life force out of them to make her young again.
It was a fun movie but I wouldn't say it was amazing.
>>
>>214494901
>When are the kids used weapons again?
Well they end up being used as a weapon against the witch herself. But again, the dream part I saw as loose symbolism that nudged Josh Brolin into figuring out what was going on and looking further into it, so not completely literal.
>Also didn’t the director say it didn’t mean anything. It was just added because he thought it was cool and each viewers head cannon for the scene was most important
I don't know, I haven't really watched any of the promotional interviews. If so, why don't you link to it? If true, then it validates my head cannon if that was the purpose.
>>
>>214494989
>I mean their main purpose seemed to be her sucking the life force out of them to make her young again.
Yes. I guess that could be loosely defined as weaponizing, she is using them as tools.
>It was a fun movie but I wouldn't say it was amazing.
Same. I thought it was a comfy watch, like an 80s or 90s horror movie, very high concept and well executed for what it is. Nothing too crazy, but a fun.
>>
>>214495030
Well first, the kids were never used as weapons, there was no intent behind breaking the spell to weaponize the kids. It just sort of happened by accident.

>I don’t know. It’s a very important moment for me in this movie, and to be frank with you, I think what I love about it so much is that I don’t understand it. I have a few different ideas of what it might be there for, but I don’t have the right answer. I like the idea that everyone is probably going to have their own kind of interaction or their own relationship with that scene, whether they don’t give a shit about it and it’s boring, or whether they think it’s some sort of political statement, or whether they think it’s just cool. This is something I've thought about too. Best I can come up with is that the witch, despite having an agenda and a plan, cannot really help if her negative energy/aura/whatever seeps into her surroundings. Kinda like releasing a predator into a different ecosystem; it's gonna do predator shit because it's hard-coded into its own nature, it will disrupt the balance that already exists wherever it was let loose, and disruption is a pretty big theme in the movie I think.

Think about power. The best and most sure way to hold power over somebody is to love them and have them love you back, but it's 2 directional and you are as under their control as they are over you. A witch is a character who has taken the opposite route to the extreme, and just wants all the power without any vulnerability. The way she accomplishes that is through magic, but the caveat is that it's not actually her that has power over anybody or anything, its the magic, which as we see in the movie has no loyalty and can be used against her, unlike love. That's because the magic is just a weapon like any weapon. Imagine a person standing in front of you telling you to give them all your money, you'd just laugh at him and move on. Now imagine he's got a gun, suddenly there's power over you but its not from him, its the gun, and the second you can get the gun in your hands instead suddenly you're the one in control. The movie is all about the ways the witch controls others and how it gets turned against her, so they titled the movie after that.

>kids and parents remain in a half-comatose state but Josh Brolin is fine
Duration was short for Brolin, so quick recovery, I guess.
>they should've set the movie in late 90s at least, because in the current year's surveillance state these kids would be on a thousand different cameras all the way from their homes to the witch house from 10 different angles
Yeah. Cops should've figured it out, but they just hand-waved it away by having them inspect the house once. Kind of a cop out.
>magic is inconsistent, but I guess it's a nitpicking
They are playing fast and loose for the plot. Not too much of an inconvenience, I guess.

Also,
>Justine didn't notice all the nametags being missing when Alex took them all
This was really breaking my suspension of disbelief.

They turn right on a corner
So no, they did not run straight towards it like they show on the map

his mind is in overdrive trying to figure shit out - if you've ever been through actual trauma you might experience something similar - he's working it over day and night, basically putting his whole life on hold being obsessive over the case so his dreams is him working every detail he knows into one weird trip - he's also staring at his kid's poster which has someone with a m16 or something on it from a video game each night he sleeps in his kid's bed but the kids being "missiles" to him might have been in his mind early on even if he doesn't mention it till later - apparently the director doesn't have a meaning for it but it makes sense in the context of the movie anyway - out of all the parents he's the one whose being driven to solve it

I noticed that too. Contradicted the drawing of the lines on the map. Sure the kids would have to move around small obstacles and such, but them running on the road when there was nothing preventing them from beelining it on the grass like was originally shown was odd

maybe it helped hide their tracks in a round about way - my mom killed herself almost a decade ago and the police dogs that were searching for her lost her trail at the end of our block which opened up into a large parking lot - she ended up being not that much further away in a wooded area but the dogs were essentially useless beyond a certain point even if they started in the right direction - the kids running on the road leave less of a trace perhaps that stepping on grass which would deform a bit and perhaps keep a scent longer? not really sure if that was the intention but in a round about way of making a good movie shot it also might be a headcannon possibility

some of the kids ran through people's front yard. even if they all ran on the sidewalk it still wouldn't make sense.
they ran through multiple blocks on the sidewalk and road to get to the witch's house and ran past tens or hundred of properties and none of the houses had cameras that wouldve seen them running past? only the the houses the kids lived in had cameras and no one else in the entire neighborhood had one?
>>

It suited Gladys personality, she either made them do it or it goes off emotions/personality. Alex controlled the kids out of desperation, so they ran after her in desperation. Dunno.

this movie fucking sucked and was made for theatres, which at this point is an insult, the quality of this board has plummeted into the ground and you guys piss me off

This is happening to me with age.

I followed it up with Together, now _that_ was fucking weird. Wasn't a complete waste of time, but if I'd known any more about it before hitting Play I'd have given it a miss.

I kind of liked that, because it let you figure out the mystery organically on your own instead of it being this reveal. By the time they show the kids in the basement you've probably already figured it out. Also I don't think the ending would have the same impact and be as satisfying if they had done it differently.

this guy gets it (others are actually too retarded to read the clues, somethin something about chuds can't media literacy)

also
the name of the school is a clear nod to a specific elementary school
and "217" references to 2021 August 7th (21+(1+7)+7) which is the date Trevor Moore was killed (bc Trevor actually knew too much about why school shootings are strangely multiplying these past decade, this anon >>214503532 is not so far from the truth)
and don't forget to notice the color/images of the character's clothes etc

That script was not worth stealing.
