I know this is far too much to ask of this site and its userbase and I won't pretend I'm any more elevated than you guys but can we please have a satisfyingly mature and adult discussion about this classic which I just watched and would love if anyone would discuss it with me in an elegant manner.
of course not. move on
There is nothing to discuss. It's perfect.
start diggin in yo butt twin
>>214475647What’s the point of the movie? Being upset about the filth and alienation of urban life is fine and you should just accept it? Trying to clean up the city through righteous vigilantism is bad?
>>214475677I concur. Every second is etched into my brain. I can quote it from memory and watch it every day. It's like a form of therapy. I envy Paul Schrader for having come up with it and putting his name in the history books like this. None of his other movies come close but that's only a testament to how monumental Taxi Driver is.
>>214475687It's about how an untethered man not placated by women and consumerism cannot exist in modern post-WW2 society, especially post-Y2K as in NOW. It's about how we're not evolved enough for our surroundings which can't account for our animalistic wiring. At the end, he gets away with it (it's not a dream) but he hasn't accomplished anything either and will seek out another bloodbath to make him feel alive, even if he got everything he "wanted" (recognition and Betsy's attention)
Haven't seen this in a few years. I'm going to watch the 4k transfer soon. Did they ever fix the blood scenes or is it gonna be like that forever?
>>214475647Jodie Foster was not believable at all as a teenage prostitute. I get that she was a mid western girl pretending to be NYC street trash but she was not good at all. The Palantine storyline is also a complete screwjob and incomprehensible. It needed more cohesion. Also, my opinion of the film soured immensely as I learned that Sport was black but they changed it not to piss off liberal intellectual anti-racists. In the 1970's, for fuck's sake. Things were always so cucked.
>>214475647It’s my favorite film. BUTI rewatched it this week and I found the freeze, over head, aftermath shot gratuitous, it goes on for a minute too longBut the segue from the blaring music to the smooth jazz score gets me every time. So glad Travis lived This is also the first viewing where I consciously recognized there isn’t a single bit of licensed music in the movie, not even the record travis bought.>>214475721Hardcore is really fucking good IMO. >>214476127The palatine situation is so easy to understand. Travis supports the guy because Betsy does. Betsy rejects him, therefore Travis goes after him to hurt her. That’s it. He thinks it’s to give his life some meaning but he just wants to hurt someone.

It needed more focus.>Hardcore is really fucking good IMO.I like Blue Collar and Light Sleeper but I feel like Schrader never topped his 70's work and he went around in circles trying to recapture that magic. Still is.I do think it's as close to "perfect" as a film gets. It's only so because it's an inherently European movie that just happens to be set in the US. Nothing else in its time or since has come close
>>214475774good post
Why did he reject the blonde chick at the end of the movie?
>>214477394Because what he wanted was to satisfy his primal urges of asserting himself on others using violence and force, not being a placated cuck and simp.
>>214476127>The Palantine storyline is also a complete screwjob and incomprehensiblebecause it's not a storyline genius
>>214477584fucking moron
>>214475647I liked that Marty was sympathetic to the guys who related to the movie and didn't go all holier than thou saying the missed the point like most directors would have.
>>214477784Marty is not Jewish and thus is not evil and has a soul.
Alain Delon and Dustin Hoffman were both offered the role of Travis but declined before Deniro ended up with it.Interesting to think how different the film might have been with either of them leading it.
>>214477952That's news to me. Last I heard, it was written for Jeff Bridges in mind and only him. De Niro was not at all considered by Schrader. I think it's impossible to picture now but still, interesting what-if.
>>214477593retard
>>214475774> he hasn't accomplished anythingHe saved a child from predators and reunited her with her family.
Paul Schrader is a hack
>>214476127She needed to be Italian or Puerto Rican or Black to make it more effective

>>214475647I've never seen the whole thing.I've tried multiple times since 1998 (i am not 45) and every single time i fall asleep.
>>214479169*i am NOW 45
>>214475647I think it's one of the most ahead of it's time films and stories ever made. It's all even worse now.
>>214476127>She needed to be Italian or Puerto Rican or Black >mid western girl pretending to be NYC street trash but she was not good at allThe idea is that she was trafficked from somewhere else and brought there.>In the 1970'sThe 70s were a very left-wing decade anon, it was when the Boomers had complete control of media and culture.
>>214478443He's been misinterpreted as wanting to accomplish that, but him going for Palantine first makes it clear that he has no coherent worldview, he was just looking for targets that he wanted to vent his frustrations on, and by random chance that target happened to be someone as morally repugnant as Sport
