I envy Paul Schrader for having come up with it and putting his name in the history books like this. None of his other movies come close but that's only a testament to how monumental Taxi Driver is.

At the end, he gets away with it (it's not a dream) but he hasn't accomplished anything either and will seek out another bloodbath to make him feel alive, even if he got everything he "wanted" (recognition and Betsy's attention)
