The release of this movie was the high water mark of the golden age of american entertainment and culture.

The high energy blockbuster era peaked and turned to self-parody and it never recovered. The exuberance and positive charge of the 80s slowly turned into increasingly cynical and nihilistic works with dubious morality.
Cartoons started having grotesque style, music become mopey and whiny, decadence and rot set in. Irony and post-irony became the norm.

It was the high watermark in that it was an era where even an underwhelming blockbuster would still be a well-made, entertaining watch full of great scenes and one liners. Doesn't happen anymore.

I was at a local arcade, and the guy had a collection of like, 30 fucking pinball machines. No it wouldn't surprise me, there's a pinball machine for almost every famous American movie.

It’s difficult because you cast Arnold in your 90s action movie and EVERYONE thinks he is the star. Instead it’s a nobody kid actor as the lead who openly talks about movie cliches indirectly to the audience. I think it works as a coming of age story about a boy who lost his Dad and filled the father figure with action movie stars

The movie failed to do better probably because of the editing, considering it was famously still being filmed ONE WEEK away from the premiere. It's way too long so the self-awareness kinda crosses over from playful to a bit grating and self-satisfied.

Also the kid is annoying as fuck.
>>
>>214486076

Wrong. In another dimension he is the type to invent baneposting

Did they cut some proper character arc scenes for him? His issues introduced in early scenes seem shrugged off later on to focus on his relationship with Slater, but by the end of the movie his escapism mindset feels validated more than challenged.
>>
>>214484414
Yeah this film rules, the over the top stuff is hilarious. Having Arnold do the parody of the action hero was a great move because it wouldn't have been the same if it was later without him.
>>
>>214484259

Close, but "True Lies" from 1994 was the summit of blockbuster entertainment. And everything Arnold has been in since has been shit. I can't even remember what happens in "End of Days" or "Eraser".

last action hero was actually a good bit after the peak, where none of the jokes were fresh, because they'd all been made before by direct parodies like loaded weapon and naked gun, movies that weren't burdened by child actor who's only line was "CUZ DIS IS A MOOOVEEE" repeated over and over.

no not it all. there's an arcade about 10 minutes down the road from me that has it. it's actually a great pin. super fun. it's got a big ass super-magnet under the middle of the playfield, and when you get multiball, it starts SLINGING THEM everywhere

In fairness to Black he was fired from the movie early then asked to come back and fix it when it fell apart, so I could understand him being critical

>>214489829
It's a decent performance but it's just not right for the movie. He's supposed to idolise Schwarzenegger and action movies but instead of being on the same page they play him like a nagging foil who just makes fun of everything
>>
>>214490088
i do agree about the kid, but the scene where they're both getting yelled at by the police chief is pretty funny
>>
>>214484259
There's probably only two kids that weren't insufferable in action movies. One's Edward Furlong and the other one is Gabriel Damon.

They're a buddy duo so he's supposed to. Danny's haughty attitude in the movie world where he suddenly feels like he has more control over things due to his movie knowledge contrasts Slater's secret disillusionment with his life and when they return to the real world you have Danny's unhappiness with his own life that he tries to escape from contrasting Slater's actual interest into this new world as escape from his own routine.
>>
>>214490501
>no you don't understand it was grating on purpose

it was a mistake to have the kid do nothing but try to convince people in a movie they're in a movie.
>>
Ok Ive decided to watch this for the first time and so far with the kid magically entering into the movie I think it must be a metaphor for how kids and people might embrace fantasy as a way to cope with trauma. His dad is dead, his mother is poor and he just survived a burglary and hostage situation. The mythical symbolism of the cinema is a nice touch too invoking the whole hero theme.
>>
>>214490553
It's not grating. It's literally the comedy of the movie and why it's entertaining.
>>
>>214490613
Shut the fuck up and watch the movie.
>>
>>214490616

Exactly. Almost as soon as the kid gets in the movie he basically starts being a dick and complaining about how fake it all is. He's needlessly and disparagingly explaining the joke rather than letting it happen and rolling with it.
>>
>>214490767
>needlessly and disparagingly explaining the joke rather than letting it happen and rolling with it.

or even better, having more than a single moment where his knowledge of the nature of the reality benefits in some way.
>>
>>214490767
That's why a certain /tv/ minset identifies with the character. He doesn't really enjoy movies; they simply represent a simplified and predictable reality he can feel superior for understanding.

Well he does direct Slater directly to the bad guys' manor, though technically what he achieves with that is putting everybody in danger sooner than they should.

I'm not sure if they thought that far, but ultimately the fact remains that the Universe the kid ends up in represents the narrative of the film, so Slater WOULD have basically achieved everything the kid "helps" him to achieve anyway. If they wanted for the presence of the kid to have some sort of actual impact on that world, maybe they should have dropped hints that this was kind of a low-on-gas sequel and Slater was being retired and killed-off, with the kid actually turning the tables on the narrative and helping him survive? Idk, as I said they probably didnt' put that much thought into that.
