I watched it in theaters and remember everyone enjoying it. The general consensus was it was better than the second film.
With the luxury of time I can look back at all the films and I realize they are all excellent. Lucas had a grand vision and he made it a reality.
All six films are great is my point.
>>
>>214485813
Still the most hype midnight release I ever went to. The energy was unlike anything since. Half the crowd had lightsabers they brought in. There was some sort of trivia contest and I knew every answer but I was too embarrassed to speak up because I was 14 and a sperg. What elevated the experience was the expectation that this truly was the final Star Wars. There weren’t any significant rumors of a sequel trilogy and most figured George would hang it up after ROTS because he wouldn’t want to face an onslaught of criticism again. Many people knew deep down this would be the final true Star Wars film. Seeing how TFA turned out vindicated that feeling.

I watch all the prequels movies in the theaters as a kid, even as a 3rd worlder kid, some people went to see it dress as darth, they were pretty mid except for that last battle the last battle in episode 1 and some parts of episode 1 were pretty cool, but you are right man the hype the people going to see because it was the last one the videogames the merch the toys everything theres some magic to that, now a days you dont even have a avengers videogame and the toys arent that good, they were even lord of the rings toys rhey even had wow toys

I watched it the day it came out. I wasn't a huge fan of TPM and AOTC as a kid, but I loved it. The movie and the novelization were the first films/books to have a profound impact on me. It inspired me to be a creative. Yeah, the prequels aren't perfect, but I enjoy them and I still adore ROTS. Playing Battlefront 2 and the movie game were also fantastic. I only wish they made Anakin a light side hero.

Yeah, I never got the hype for ROTS. It has a lot of the same problems as AOTC (ridiculous dialogue, wooden Anakin and Padme) and the fight scenes with Palpatine and Grievous are really clunky.

If anything, the best prequel is probably TPM. Just a solid little adventure story, even if Jar Jar is annoying.
>>
>>214485813
I was two weeks shy of eleven when it came out. I saw all three of the prequels in the theater when they came out. This is the only one that left me feeling disappointed. Emotionally and narratively it's the worst of the prequels, and I would even go as far as to say that it's the only bad Star Wars film that George Lucas made. It's both goofier and campier than the Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones and also excessively dark as a way to suffice for the lack of actual depth. For the first and only time in George Lucas's saga, the characters and events feel like they're only happening to bring about a certain end. People aren't acting like people. Anakin seems to have had some sort of lobotomy. He acts like his IQ is in the double digits. He doesn't even seem as upset as he did in Attack of the Clones, just stupider.

Attack of the Clones is basically a perfect Star Wars movie with the exception of some underdeveloped dialogue, but the dialogue in that film isn't nearly as much as a problem as it is with this film. I walked out of the theater believing that I had seen the best Star Wars film, but deep, deep down, I was disappointed. The fact that people hate Attack of the Clones and love this one is actually embarrassing. I think that people were just ready to like Star Wars again at this point no matter what it is and have decided to double down on their collective taker for twenty years. Even the lightsaber fights are boring despite how many of them they are. When you saw Yoda take out his lightsaber in Attack of the Clones, it was almost symphonic, like everything that had happened up to that point was getting you in a place mentally where you'd go with it. The duel is symphonically spaced out, and that's following the arena battle and the outbreak of the Clone Wars, so it kind of earns it. Revenge of the Sith is oversaturated with over the top lightsaber duels that aren't even that interesting.
>>
>>214485813
Imma be honest I was 11 or something and the
>we were like brothers!
bit is the only time I’ve ever cried at a movie like some womyn
>>
>>214490581
Attack of the Clones has almost no issues. The ones it does have are far worse in the Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Sith. It's the most hated because it had the lest amount of fanfare due to being in the middle of the trilogy.
>>
It's overly gratuitous. It shows you stuff that you didn't need to see and leaves out stuff that you did need to see. The duel between Anakin and Obi Wan feels weirdly anti climactic, and it follows no actual story. There's no point where I feel as invested as I did watching an exhausted Qui Gon battle Darth Maul while Obi Wan watches, unable to intervene, or watching Anakin and Obi Wan both go up against Tyrannus while the other one lies injured. There's just nothing like that in any of those five lightsaber duels. Ironically, the most intense lightsaber duel in that movie is the one with the worst choreography, that being the one in Palpatine's throne room.
>>
>>214489890
It's weird seeing Finn holding a blue lightsaber on the cover of the Force Awakens being that he basically turned out to be the Jar Jar of the trilogy.

>>
Anyone who isn’t a zoomer remembers TPM had way more hype than ROTS. Even TFA had more hype. By the time ROTS came out, a lot of people were already soured on the prequels, good word of mouth helped, but expectations were lower going in.
>>
>>214491568
tpm had a metric fuckton more marketing is why the hype was bigger
but each of the prequels had a fair amount of hype towards them
tpm - star wars is back and darth maul
clones - jango/boba fett and yoda fighting
sith - anakin becomes vader
>>
I know about the Phantom Menace hype was unreal. And the Revenge of the Sith hype was also huge,

was there no fanfare for Attack of the Clones?

How did they even recover from releasing the worst movie ever made to build hype for the third one after no one liked the first one either?
>>
>>214485813

>>
>>214485813

>>
>>214493264
the big media push for Attack of the Clones was that it was going to be this dark and adult apology to Star Wars fans for Phantom Menace. Then you went and it's even worse.
>>
>>214494161
In what way is it worse? There's really nothing wrong with it aside from the dialogue, which Phantom and Revenge are way worse at. I think people are just embarrassed to admit that they don't like it because it has less lightsaber fights. The last hour and a half of that film is some of the best Star Wars I've ever seen.
>>
>>214485813
It was a whimper compared to the buildup to Phantom Menace. Clone Wars kinda sucked and everyone was meh about the third installment. You were just 11 OP.

>>
The moment you saw that mask come down in-between scenes of his suit being placed on and intercut with the births of Luke and Leia, and you see it slide into place with that mournful low cello playing Vader's theme. And then you get that last whine of machinery before that brief pause. Before you hear that haunting hiss of breath literally FILL your eardrums on the inhale and see the billow of smoke float away upon the exhale. The platform rising up as Vader appears before you in the suit for the first time and stares into the camera.

Holy fuck, I can still feel those goosebumps...
>>
>>214495371
I was five. Like I said, it may have been bigger, but given the hype around Revenge of the Sith, it was not "five times bigger." That's ridiculous. Even saying it was two times bigger is a ridiculous stretch. Just say it was bigger. It's still not entirely believable, but it's at least within the realm of possibility.

>>
If I remember I was dressed up like Darth Vader. 9 years old and I stood in line like 3 hours
>>
>>214496099
I saw the Phantom Menace in the theater three times, which I can remember clearly. I said I might not have the best perspective on the fanfare around that film given my age, but with how big Revenge of the Sith was, the Phantom Menace basically couldn't have been five times bigger as you're saying, or even twice as big. Maybe it was bigger, which I still doubt, but if you're going to say that the hype for Revenge of the Sith pales in comparison to Phantom, you're wrong.
>>
>>214491307
Why? Because there was lava? Return of the Jedi's duel was far more intense. I always felt let down by the duel between Anakin and Obi Wan in Revenge.
>>
>>214496438
I didn't say it wasn't bigger. You're now backtracking and acting like we were arguing about whether the Phantom Menace had more hype than Revenge of the Sith, which I've always said might be true. You were acting like it was massively bigger and that Revenge of the Sith paled in comparison, which it didn't. Revenge of the Sith had an absurd amount of hype.

I was about to turn 10 late in 1999 and remember getting pic related with my breakfast cereals that whole summer before Phantom Menace was released and seeing and reading a shit ton and being hyped as fuck because I loved Star Wars more than anything else at the time.

I don't know if I even heard about Revenge of the Sith until my dad bought the DVD when it was released. I don't know if it was because I was older, had become more interested in LOTR, was too busy with sports and music by or that there wasn't that much hype.
>>
>>214485813
>Who here remembers when it was released?
As someone who was an actual fucking ADULT at that time, no, it was NOT. The hype was far bigger for Eps 1 & 2, both of which were HUGE letdowns. Each film had a smaller and smaller merchandise presence compared to the previous film after E1.

After it can out, it fizzled pretty fast and only the diehards gave a shit. It was a shitty film.

Had the weirdest experience. On opening night, I loved it. Thought it was one of the top 3 films in the saga.

Went back to watch it a second time, in a less crowded theater.....when Anakin was on the balcony talking to Padme about how much he was in love with her, I literally CURLED UP in my seat from second hand embarrassment. It was one of the most uncomfortable pieces of dialogue I ever had to sit though. I didn't even notice it on opening night because we were all high off the hype. Even the Yoda/Sidious fight didn't have nearly the same effect the second time around. I remember watching Yoda jump around like a retard and the very obvious CGI Sidious thinking how cheap it looked. The movie just did not age very well.

I think the biggest thing that just ruins the entire movie is how Lucas completely botched the Vader turn. It was the DUMBEST logic ever. I remember a group of dudes sitting in front of me audibly yelling out "WHAT???" when Anakin just knelt down and said he'd do anything Palpatine wants.

Yeah, the way Anakin became Vader was so fucking stupid and unconvincing, it totally ruined the film on top of everything else. It just made no sense. He actually seemed more level headed at the beginning of Revenge of the Sith than he did in Attack of the Clones, then he just does a complete 180, but it isn't because of resentment or jealousy or hating the jedi. No, it's because he's trying to save his wife. It was a means to an end, meaning he had no real attachment to the dark side. Fucking RUINED the movie. I can't believe how fucking stupid it was. I also hated how goofy General Grievous and how the battle droids basically became pit droids with guns, but the way George Lucas butchered the most important part of that move is what really solidifies it as the worst film of the original saga for me. And I thought it was the best Star Wars movie when I first saw it in the theater, although I was eleven. I mean it's good in some ways, but narratively it's an absolute trainwreck.

Same reason why Nostalgia Critic is still going, being the first people to make a career out of bitching about movies on YouTube gives you seniority.

People are probably talking about guys on YT they don’t even watch anymore.

Even as a teen, I thought it was a mortifying disaster. And I liked attack of the clones

Hopefully that disgusting blob Stocklasa dies of a heart attack before George Lucas. Watch as everyone here celebrate the end of his worthless, grifter life and the conclusion of a terrible show for retards.

People were burned by Episodes I and II so they were really hoping this one wouldn't be shit, and when it wasn't quite as shit as the others it got sucked off for being the best of the prequels.

And all the advertising was crammed with Darth Vader which got plebs to go "Wow Darth Vader's in this, I recognise the Darth Vader!!"

I remember not having seen Attack of the Clones and going to my local rental shop to ask if they had it. They didnt so I saw Revenge in the theatres without watching Clones. I also bought the silver box set with the original trilogy the day of (i think there was some kind of deal if you showed your ticket). Having seen Clones afterwards I didnt think it was necessary and is probably my least favourite (of the original six). I remember enjoying Sith but watching the original movies again the weekend after (having seen parts on tv) thinking they were much better. This was before I had internet btw so there was no filter or influence on my opinion. I actually remember the hype around Phantom Menace much better because i was buying the toys, games and books just for aesthetic reasons before seeing the movie. i think also subscribed to those Star Wars magazines having only seen Menace and parts of the original on television.

>The hype was so insane that it felt like a literal national holiday. There was no phenomenon like it since.
No. The general public was already over the prequels by the time the movie came out, the only hype to be found was on playgrounds. That said the movie was better than audiences expected, or perhaps it would be right to say, less bad.
>>
Reminder that AotC and RotS are tied for the fewest number of Academy Award nominations with Solo. TLJ and RoSW both beat them, lol.

Anyone pretending the prequels were well received is delusional.
