>>214490872There's never none of these demure boys come to any proof, for thin drink doth so overcool their blood, and making many fish-meals, that they fall into a kind of malegreen-sickness, and then, when they marry, they get wenches. They are generally fools and cowards, which some of us should be too, but for inflammation.A good sherris-sack hath a twofold operation in it. It ascends me into the brain, dries me there all the foolish and dull and crudy vapors which environ it, makes it apprehensive, quick, forgetive, full of nimble, fiery, and delectable shapes, which, delivered o'er to the voice, the tongue, which is the birth, becomes excellent wit. The second property of your excellent sherris is the warming of the blood, which, before cold and settled, left the liver white and pale, which is the badge of pusillanimity and cowardice. But the sherris warms it and makes it course from the inwards to the parts extremes. It illumineth the face, which as a beacon gives warning to all the rest of this little kingdom, man, to arm, and then the vital commoners and inland petty spirits muster me all to their captain, the heart, who, great and puffed up with this retinue, doth any deed of courage, and this valor comes of sherris. So that skill in the weapon is nothing without sack, for that sets it a-work, and learning a mere hoard of gold kept by a devil, till sack commences it and sets it in act and use. If I had a thousand sons, the first humane principle I would teach them should be to forswear thin potations and to addict themselves to sack.

Did Native Americans even live that high up in the mountains of Colorado? I'm guessing not. You'll find more food and resources at lower elevations.

>>214489752-The Hotel is America.-Most of the employees of the hotel, whether alive or ghost, particularly upper management, are middle-aged white men. The latter class are the managers and the people really in charge of the Hotel/America. They know the dirty history of the place, and once they trust others, they'll let other white men in on the secret. Yes, there's the odd receptionist girl and African-American cook, but they are either given low posts or middle management jobs out of tokenism, as long as they comply with white civil society (Hallorann is very upbeat and respectful with Wendy and Danny in public, and throughout his other public interactions in general like on the plane, he doesn't get "real" until he's alone with Danny).-The Hotel/America was built and settled by killing and displacing Indians.-Given this context, "White Man's Burden" can be taken in a few different ways. It comes from the Kipling poem which has the paternalistic idea that it is the white man's task to civilize/christianize the world's natives (if not eliminate them or displace them altogether), but Jack is of course referring to the drink itself. As an alcoholic, the remark can be taken as a bit of self-deprecating humor, but it also betrays a slight note of racism (the poem itself has a racist idea) which becomes more explicit when Jack is socialized into saying the n-word. The Hotel/America itself might also be the White Man's Burden, the structure/society that they must uphold or else everything will go to hell.
cheers everyone
