When we got into the HD era to draw something by hand with the detail good enough to be scanned even to 1080p it takes 6-8 times more effort. Old animation have very low details. Snow white even when relisted to DVD was touched on a computers because it looked like ass. Disney switched to computer animation after The Hunchback of Notre-Dame and never looked back. The japanise hold out for 2 more years, but the video standards were more or less set in stone by 98-99. Correct me if I'm wrong but the first prototype of blu ray player was shown on some expo in 1999 and the 1080p format along with it. Gits 1995 adjusted for inflation is 150 milions and is not really 1080p quality without retouching. Now you have the Dot.com bubble that made everything more expensive and squeezed the margins + new formats that will make everything at least twice as expensive to make if you wish to use the new blu ray format. No one will give 300 millions for animation unless you go full retard, because if you don't make some groundbreaking hit you are done. There some great hybrid animation even today when the studio care. Suzume is 3 years old and looks great. And don't act like life action movies are not the same. I would like modern movies to be shot on film and then digitalized but this will take more effort into framing the scene and lighting no one will gonna deal with that shit anymore so you are never getting back soft inky black shadows and highlights.
