They were bottom-of-the-barrel losers who are stuck babysitting crazies as their occupation so when one of them went on TV and insulted them, it was a very brutal reminder of their lot in life and they took it out on the poor, defenseless mental patient at their mercy. They hate their lives and are just as miserable as Arthur or any of the crazies in "Arkham" or whatever.
