One example is the movie Shame where the sex depicted on-screen is nigh constant but never titillating as its characterized as a symptom of an addiction resulting from a sexually disturbed relationship with his sister when they were both children. Without those sex scenes the plot of Shame wouldn't work, they're needed to showcase the reality that nothing about said encounters was actually empowering for the protagonist.
