But I just get the vibe Tozer was a nice dude, completely out of his depth. Manipulated into believing his men would get a fairer shake of the stick with Hickey.Hell. Even at the end. He's trying to ensure the survival of his men, with minimal thoughts of self preservation. Which leads to his unfortunate off screen death.

I just finished reading this. It's pretty unbelievable that everyone survived despite the conditions and the length of time they were stuck. There's a kino bit towards the end on South Georgia Island when Shackleton is at the top of a 2,000-foot precipice and says, "Since the freezing fog will kill us if we stay overnight, let's slide down." His two men obviously think that's a deranged idea so he asks them, "Will we survive if we stay here?" And their reply is basically, "Okay, let's get sliding." And somehow the madmen make it.
