The movie fails to understand completely the philosophical problems it was inspired from (Plato's cave, dream argument, etc.). The passage from illusion to reality makes sense only if there is some added value to the reality plane. Truth alone cannot be that added value: if I live 80 years as a battery for machines while experiencing an all sensory illusion of a world that it's better than my base reality, what even is the point in going back to reality?
In Plato's cave, the whole point is the difference between shadows in the cave and the tridimensional world outside the cave: "reality" is better because it literally has an extra dimension; it's larger, colorful, more complex, full of unexpected pleasant and valuable things, etc. In matrix you have two realities that are roughly the same in every regard, except in one you are a miserable fuck and in the other you hare hooked to a giant masturbation machine.
