Children's bedtime stories like this are written to intentionally be kind of boring to help lul kids to sleep. This kind of story doesn't make for a good movie because the audience wants to stay awake to watch it.

I never saw the movie, but the main boy is an unlikable prick in the book. I can't imagine following his exploits for a feature length movie.
