The Muslim guys heard and tried convert me, but I didn't want to get involved, so I told them I was Christian, but respected Muhammad as a prophet and that earned me total non-interference. I know a few words in a few other minority languages, and know how to talk to those minorities, which got me non-interference from them as well. The biker gangs are multi-racial, but don't recruit you until you're out of prison, and the only other white gangs were all small-time local groups with no sway. 3 weeks later, I was suddenly pulled out into protective custody and told basically "Oopsie doopsie, we made a fuckwucky with your paperwork and faxed it to the wrong office 5 weeks ago, then just never followed up". I spent the rest of the time in a peaceful regional labour camp until I was released.

Violence is fairly commonplace, but it's usually spur of the moment, hot-blooded violence over slights real or imagined, that end with bruises and tapouts. The fact my cellmate tried to sexually assault me was considered somewhat unusual and the gangs are really built around high-trust in-groups for companionship and safety, rather than organised crime. The bikies are an exception, but they're so far above prison gangs that they essentially operate in different worlds. No one in their right mind would fuck with a Coffin Cheater or Comanchero, and none of the bikies would sabotage a short stint in medium security to fuck with the local wildlife. That's the real segregation, and as long as you keep clean, keep quiet and keep to yourself, and don't cross into genuine organised crime, it should be a fairly boring experience.
