As far as why Roger was killed; he was an inherent danger if arrested, since Alonzo stole a very large sum of money from him, and the prosecutor had said if a cop got publicly caught, the cop would get prosecuted. It’s his sense of malicious irony and sense of humour. And it’s just lucky coincidence that ruins the plan. Alonzo was always ready to kill Hoyt if he didn’t prove to be willing to become complicit and corrupt like everyone else. He had an overall plan in place with some of the details left open so that he could improvise as needed be.
