It's considered a trivial thing but it isn't. For centuries, they've been managing the way their host countries see them. Not only by changing their names but changing the way they dress, even changing their religious practices to seem less weird while still not assimilating and remaining a distinct, hostile group. In some ways, they've been running a century long public relations campaign. It's no surprise they took to advertising and mass-media so easily, they've more or less been doing the same thing in order to hide and blend in.
