Hollywood had pretty much monopoly on entertainment and you had to literally become a prostitute to get a chance at being a star.It was normal (and still is) to fuck producers, directors and casting agents and be willing and obedient about it too, because everyone else is competing with you and putting out.Even if you had a career you had to keep doing it since they could blacklist you for being "difficult" on a whim.Point being is that young people these days don't dream of being movie stars, they dream of being influencers and streamers and so on.
