I watched it at the cinemas and didn't hate it. Obviously, nowhere near as good as the first but I feel like people were overreacting with their hatred of The Incredibles 2. That said, I remember almost none of it other than my initial impressions after watching it. It may have been that there were just much worse family animation films coming out around that time

This would tie to the continued family theme, as the next generation has firmly grasped the torch and started running. The movie would be about the new heroes making and overcoming their own mistakes (both personal and professional), with the old generation on standby to lend a hand

Incredibles 1 was basically just a movie about a man undergoing a midlife crisis (being forced to become a normal person) and ultimately rediscovering that purpose as a family man (instead of doing covert vigilante shit with his buddy, he needs to involve himself with his wife and kids more) I'm not sure how you could really follow that up.
