I'd say that's part of the problem. They just hung on to the same jokes
>look guest animation by X famous youtuber
>whacky lil monke fella having a normal conversation?!
I cant think of it all off the top of my head but they didn't really move on from the same 5 rotating jokes they did before. I'd say the entire premises is too constrictive and can't really go anywhere so it was doomed beyond a one off season show.
>>
>>214534033
Only if Pim and Charlie develop actual personalities in this season and aren't just flat nothing characters
>>
>>214534295
The gwimbly episode was amazing but it lost steam hard after that. They seem to be running out of ideas.

Wasn’t really a thing in S1. Also Smiling Friends using multiple mediums of animation is why people like it so much.
>>
>HOLDS UP SPORK
>>
>>214534477
Do you think ATHF doesn't have a similarly constrictive setting?
>>
HELLO I'M ROY DYSMEY HELLO I'M ROY DISMEY THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME
>>
Never watched it. Looks really gay. Like a normies understanding of what subversive media is meant to be
>>
>>214534478
>wasn't a thing in S1
That's literally the pim episode you retard.
>>214534503
ATHF could have been but they dropped that retarded suit mandated autism about them solving crime and went where they wanted. Smiling Friends needs to drop the.... smiling friends part of it like they did.
>>
>>214534503
They didn't stick to the "food detectives" premise after the first couple episodes. They realized the characters carried the show so it just became a show about putting these characters in funny situations. ATHF only cares about putting as many jokes and bits into an episode as possible, not about making an coherent plot. Smiling Friends lacks the rapid fire comedy of ATHF because Zach and Michael aren't comedians. You can tell ATHF was written by comedians. And that Smiling Friends wasn't.
>>
>>214534539
I knew you would say the Pim episode you predictable retard lol. They got Harry Partridge because he can do hand drawn fluid animations in short amount of time, he literally says this on Oney’s drawing videos and isn’t even referenced at all. God you shitskins are annoying
>>
>>214534640
>guest animator doesn't count because he can make fluid animations fast
what?
>>
>>214534609
I liked the humor in smiling friends. Charlie and Pim are weird creatures in this strange world, but they are complete turbonormies that don't react to the stuff that the viewer would find strange but still freak out like a normal person would over like, getting their wallet stolen. I thought it was really unique
>>
>>214534660
Ignore him he's a /co/per. They live in their own world.
>>
>>214534033
I'm excited for the anti-smiling friends schizo to start his spam again.
>>
>>214534660
They asked him to animate Mip because of his talents. Not for being an eceleb. Zoomers don’t even know who Harry Partridge is. I didn’t even deny that ecelebs weren’t a thing in the first season btw. But it’s not comparable to getting NC to cameo as a “hey I know that guy!” I don’t see why this is so hard to comprehend

They dropped the crime thing, but they stuck to all of the other repetitive nonsense. Your arguments don't even make sense if this issue is that the characters are the same and just have one-off wacky interactions. Smiling Friends literally fits into the same category of "weird group of freaks interacts with other freaks."

This anon makes good points and is being needlessly shit on. I agree with you and ATHF is a great comparison because SF at its best is when it's absurd like classic adult swim
Though I would say the characters have a fair but of personality, I just think it needs more jokes
I really enjoyed Cusack's other show about those Australian girls, so they should probably just let him write the bulk of it

>hurrr the simpsons is so repetitive theyre ALWAYS at the simpsons house at some point in an episode!
If you genuinely don't get how the forced interaction of smiling friends being religated to their job is completely different to ATHF's open style you might be fucking retarded.
>>
How long before people notice it's literally only the pilot which is actually creative and funny? Just compare the amount of ideas of every scene in the pilot to any scene in a later episode.

>pilot
every scene is primarily made to tell funny jokes, the plot exists as an excuse to tell jokes
> every other episode
every scene is to advance the story
>>
>>214536015
The styles are equally open. The premise of a job where you make people smile doesn't even make sense.
They're not working at a shoe factory.
>>
>>214535857
Filtered
>>
>>214534539
It's literally just a loose framework that they don't even bother with in half of the episodes, just like Aqua Teen.
"Person has specific problem that the Smiling Friends need to solve", very quickly becomes "Alan has to pick up paperclips", or "Charlie goes to Hell".
>>
>>214536090
How bout the space alien episode.
They didn't go there for a job, and they never had to make anybody smile.
The other anon is full of shit with this retarded complaint. It's one of the least formulaic currently running cartoons in terms of art style and plot
>>
>>214536150

>>
>>214536150
The funny thing about the space alien episode is that ATHF literally did the exact same "frat aliens" bit over a decade earlier. And the comparison between the 2 perfectly encapsulates the problem again. Smiling Friends is way too heavy on the formulaic plot developments. That works if you are trying to do something story heavy, but Smiling Friends doesn't do that. The exact problem is that the show is too short for story heavy episodes, but the show still tries too hard to stick to a formulaic plot structure.

Take the whole paperclips thing for example. There's a part where the red guy (literally forgot his name) gets chased around by ghost pirates. There's no joke, it's literally just a straight played "adventure sequence". However it is so short lived theres nothing explored with that on a story level either. No jokes / comedy, no story. Just plot for the sake of plot. I can literally picture them trying to come up with how to advance the arc and they just handwave "uhh I guess he meets ghost pirates who want to kill him".
>>
>>214536403
I think the joke is that being sent to pick up paperclips turns into a whole elaborate adventure.
>>
>>214536435
That's a joke on paper. "Wouldn't it be funny if he just wanted some paperclips but then had to go on a huge adventure just for that?". The idea is funny. The same way "Wouldn't it be funny if we had an episode that's just an ant walking across the screen for 20 minutes?" is a funny idea. You make people laugh by imagining the concept.

Executed, it's a different story however. Actually watching an ant walk across the screen for 20 minutes isn't funny. Again, telling your friends about it might make them laugh. But actually experiencing it isn't.

It's the same with this paper clip thing. It's funny on an conceptual level. But once you actually have to execute it, it's not funny.
>>
>>214536503 (me)
Basically, the idea of it is funny, not the actual thing.
>>
is this and rick and morty actually funny or does it bog down fast
>>
>>214536534
the episode had loads of funny bits tho
>>
>>214536403
Wanna know another big difference between ATHF and Smiling Friends?
ATHF has practically 0 deviation in the art style and animation. It's barely even animation most of the time. The show was not made for that reason. All the inspiration that went into it was put into dialogue and surreal concepts/jokes or anti jokes.
Smiling Friends is made by animation nerds. Part of the show is the art of the animation itself. It's not the main focus of the show from a writing perspective, but the plots are written so that sometimes they can try and weird animation, or referrence some animation thing they like. That has value. They write plenty of jokes too, but often the jokes are linked with the animation.
I love ATHF too, but its purpose is so fundamentally different from Smiling Friends from its conception, it's retarded to compare them in this way to begin with.
>>
>>214535932
I think anons needlessly shitting on the show because it didn’t fit into their “here’s what I would do, I’d make it ATHF 2” scenario are autistic
>>
>>214536643
Zach should notice me and give me a job though.
Here's an idea: an episode where they all go to a carwash! Flippin nuts.
>>
>>214536580
But Smiling Friends isn't impressive in terms of animation as art. It's a crunched TV show that has to be animated fast on a strict budget. Sure there are some decent scenes, such as the one where the hobbit guy melts. But overall Smiling Friends is not worth it just for it's animation. Maybe that'll change with this new season, if they got a better budget / more time. But as it was so far I do not see the animation as something that alleviates the show past it's writing constrictions.
>>
>>214534033
Not really, but thanks for asking
>>
>>214536668
Yeah me too! I’m just filled with ideas, like Glep shilling Cricket mobile phones for a whole episode and that’s the joke. Zack! Give me a job now
>>
>>214536669
Relative to the genre it's in and it's budget, it's far better in that regard than its peers. Your standards are way too fucking high, especially coming from somebody who loves ATHF.
>>
>that nose creature
I felt like it's gonna turn into his obsession the first time I saw it. It's been like a decade and it's still on.
>>
>>214534518
Only bit I like and its an indian piss take
>>
>>214536751
Obviously ATHF doesn't have good animation. Because like you said yourself, that's not what the show is about. Smiling Friends on the other hand, IS all about the animation according to yourself. So when the animation is just "good compared to other low budget stuff" that isn't good enough. If animation is the main appeal then that animation has to be phenomenal.

If your friends all have F grades, but you have a D grade, that makes you the best of your peers. But it does not make you a great student. Smiling Friends animation might be better than Family Guy's, but it is not great animation.
>>
>>214536669
Considering that it airs on a network that started with shows that simply had characters as placeholders for funny dialogue it is. Its stop motion is no Laika but the fact that it even has that to begin with is cool.
>>
>>214536909
It's not that the animation of SF is necessarily all really good. It's that the animation is fun, and often the animation is the joke.
Like having a random rotoscoped character is funny, if you're a particular kind of animation nerd, but a lot of people are going to get nothing at all out of that.
>>
>>214537049
I can see that. It is fun (not funny, but fun) how they incorporate all the different styles like that. But I think past a certain point the wonder of that sort of thing will wear off. And there are other shows who have done similar things (such as Gumball) who still got more going for them past that.

No, it's not that Smiling Friends isn't ATHF, it's that Smiling Friends isn't good at anything. Not story, not comedy, not animation. It's mediocre. And a circlejerk for YouTuber e-celeb shit.
