First 3 seasons were good but didn't have a chance to be discussed in Sopranos or Mad Men territory. Then the 4th season became insanely kino out of nowhere and the quality never got down, peaking with probably the best series finale in television history. Yes, it was that good, I just wish most people wouldn't drop it around seasons 2 and 3.

It was the season where they started exploring more the characters and their psyches. Sure there were scenes and episodes on the earlier seasons for that, but not entire plots in a serialized format. All the new characters were top notch, and the entire thing took into a more realistic narrative that doesn't have much to envy to Wire's best seasons.

For me it's Franka Potente in whichever season that was.
