Can we stop with meme yet? Just because the story ultimately shits itself does not mean the early conspiracy episodes weren't great.

The funniest part is that it was a copycat of a copycat of a copycat, yet now nobody remembers the shows it was copying, since they all lasted just for one season
>>
>>214538096
>>the story is completely and utter dog shit

That makes sense since the story arc was added to the show perhaps to boost ratings if people tuned in every week to see what happened to the smoking man. But the impression you get from the story episodes was they had no plan and were just making it up as they went along.
>>
What's better, X-Files or Fringe?
>>
How the fuck did mulder get out of that burning train car? Did they just hope the audience would forget?
>>
>>214538178
The overarching story doesn't lose steam until after the film (post Season 5.)
>>
>>214538507
Supposedly there was some hole he crawled out of
>>
The Lone Gunmen episodes are the best episodes.
>>
>>214538565
>this

They took all the mysterious alien stuff and tried to have it all tie together when it obviously didn't.
>>
>>214538478
For me while X-files remains a cult is ultimately Fringe even if in 10 or 20 years there will be more people that still know Xfiles.

>Makes things clear of where the plot is headed from the start
>no retcons
>plot is coherent and consistent
>despite a lot of episodes being "monster of the week" it always advances something, either in the main plot or an aspect of the characters
It really shouldnt' be watched out of order, thought they make it possible.
>protagonists aren't alone and are actually supported by the people they work with
>it really is about family, so is nice to see a cast of people that end really liking each other
>strong female character done right, as good as Ripley from Alien
>when she gets super power she doesn't turn into some kind of boss that can work alone, she is rightfully scared of them, she is emotional in all the right ways, empathic, sympathetic, somewhat stubborn, not invincible.
>Her alternative version really feels and look a different person.

>John Noble is amazing and has a great range
He reminds me of my father, he really manages to encapsulate that sort of brilliance, absent minded, somewhat random rage, is a odd cocktail I can't quite describe
I love the supporting cast too, Lance Reddick as Broyles, Blair Brown as Nina Sharpe, September the Observer, Charlie Francis (Kirk Acevedo), always makes me sad seeing him go, but it was still a great sendoff.

I love how they never wento overboard with CGI, I think is gonna age quite well because they seemed to have an idea of how it would look and how far they could go.
I like the music, the theme, I never skip the intro.
The ending ties everything and is very satisfying.

Is hard to put it all into words.
>>
>get a chance to make a movie after that huge cliffhanger
>is not about aliens but some kidnappings
WHY?
>new revival tries to do a soft reboot
>TWICE
How? Is like Carter was given a second chance at life and then decided to overdose, 3 times.
Why couldn't he just do like Samurai Jack did it, one last season to tie it all?
>>
>>214538096
>the episodic/monster of the week episodes are extremely enjoyable
>the story is completely and utter dog shit
i ended up dropping it due to this. there was an ep that focuses on finding his sister and the way it ends is just wild. then the next ep is monster of the week and taht fucker is just up and going like he is at the top of his game. i get they felt they could play loose with it because of the airing procedures back then but it's hard to ignore when you're watching an ep or two every couple days
>>
They were making shit up as they went and have admitted as such. It wasn’t suppose to have this over arching conspiracy plot. That happened entirely because Anderson got pregnant during season one and they had to make a storyline to explain why they were separated until after she had her kid. Cigarette Smoking Man, Skinner and The Lone Gunmen were suppose to be one off characters. But the shows main writers would go onto early message boards and saw people were interested in the characters and brought them back. Deep Throat was killed because of online complaints he was being used too much as a crutch and an info dump.
>>
>>214538565
You're 100% correct. But there were definitely cracks forming in the mythology arc as early as Seasons 4 and 5.
>>
>>214538478
fringe has a better main story arc but olivia is a charisma vacuum compared to scully.

They're okay in the first season, but it immediately starts going to shit in the second season. It's not just that the plot falls apart, the tone and writing in those episodes is just consistently poor and much less enjoyable than the lighter tone of the monster of the week episodes. Chris Carter's penchant for melodrama is embarrassing.

>>

Those episodes were shit and the Native American mysticism was extremely hokey and retarded.
>>
>>214538868
Tying everything UFO- or alien-related into the myth arc developed into a genuine burden imo. When they made episodes that broke the mold like Jose Chung's From Outer Space or Dreamland, you got some fun, weird takes on the alien mythos. The myth arc, pretty much by definition, had to become predictable because eventually it would always be about the colonists, the syndicate, black oil, etc. It would have been much better to keep things in the background: have Mulder talk about ongoing and intensifying mass abduction events, strings of weird pregnancies, etc. as the reason why they have to investigate this biolab/airbase/supposed abductee in a sleepy PNW town, and then focus on the local story.
Anyway, that's how I would fix the show that started airing before I was born.

>>214538478
I preferred frings x files mythology is long and goes off the rails. Fringe keeps it tight

Smallville Season 4.
>>
Same thing happened to Simpsons and X-files.
It became too mainstream.
>>
>>214538565
The movie did a really good job of leaving the myth arc in a finished state. I really don't understand what they were attempting to do with further seasons. It just seems so weird from a show running perspective to cap off the major plotline of your tv show in between seasons. Maybe there is something i'm missing, maybe the primary purpose of the movie was to reinvigorate funding for the TV show, or maybe they were at an impass with the studios starting to show an unwillingness to fund future seasons. I seem to recall the show still being very popular at the time time of the movie.

The X-Files is a show that you just can't binge watch(and by binge watching I mean more than 3 episodes a week).

>went from alien colonization to super soldiers and Scully’s baby being Jesus
Lol, this is where it truly went to shit. Smoking man was holding the myth arc together
>>
>>214538096
I wish they continued to film in Canada. The rainy, atmospheric episodes of the early seasons really are the best.

The actor for Mulder was the one who instigated the relocation so he could be near his wife only to cheat on her later anyway. What a dick, man.

When did this supposed consensus begin? Because the Anthology episodes were previously considered the best. Zoomies trying to revise history as per usual.
>>
>>214538178
The mythology up to season 4 is very well done despite introducing a lot of varying elements. The ambiguity about aliens being a hoax in season 5 was where it started to get too convoluted and contrived.

The mythology episodes with the terminator esque henchman was the best

My day job allows me to binge watch whatever I want on my phone for ~8 hours every day. I'm mid way through Season 5 of the X-Files right now and frankly love how quickly Mulder seems to have lost his patience with this dumb bitch.

Everyone acts (and acted back in the day) like Duchovny was such a piece of shit for forcing production to move.. But it had been like 8-9 years already. He would have been well within his right to move the fuck on and let the show die by then.
>>
>>214542093
I remember him joking way back that the reason Mulder's apartment number is 42 is because that's the age they'll let him stop doing the show.
You know those threads that are an image from Office Space or Fight Club and go
>this was considered a nightmarish existence in the 90s
Well basically Duchovny was doing that in real life. In retrospect he was a huge star on one of the most beloved shows ever and was doing it in 90% White 1990s Vancouver yet he felt disatisfied.

>show is meant to be about paranormal, horrors of the unknown, and mysteries
>people like the comedy episodes the best
Someone dropped the ball
>>
>>214542615
The best episodes blend horror, mystery, and comedy. The mythology episodes take themselves too seriously and the show is best when the two leads are interacting in interesting and amusing ways as they have incredible chemistry
>>
>>214538096
Legion. I cared about David's girlfriend for exactly 10 of that show and it was that shot of her ass, but even 2 seasons in they couldn't decide who the central character of the show was and so I had to sit through episodes of her crying because a man was mean to her.

>>
the problem with mytharc is that it went to shit after artificially inflating the series' lifespan

up until movie 1, they were pretty goat tier and also usually accompanied with higher production value
>>
Does this show get better? I'm not really impressed with season 1
>>
>>214542174
> 90% White 1990s Vancouver yet he felt disatisfied
I wanna move there because it’s literally the only hospitable climate that isn’t a frozen shithole in Canada but damn it’s more like 30% white now, 70% brown or yellow. 90s were truly the best time to be an adult.
>>214543560
When does Legion get bad? Been meaning to watch it. The visuals of S1 remind me of Wes Anderson movies.
>>
If /tv/ had an organized a nightly watch-along with reviews and debates on the episodes would be fun. x-files was just too far before the time
>>

>>214544036
Season 1 is good, season 2 is hit or miss. Checked out halfway through season 3. Keep telling myself I'll go back and finish it but the story gets so convoluted and surreal that I don't really feel any strong desire to see how it ends.

I just wanna live somewhere with nice weather and majority white but that’s near impossible in Canada. All the jeets move in hoards to the major big cities like toronto, Vancouver and Montreal. And I don’t want to live in the prairie provinces but that seems to be where majority white population is. Too bad you get extreme hot summers and extreme cold winters that last half the year there. Can’t win in Cuckanada.

the problem with the movie being the ending is that while your primary thought is "are aliens real" and the movie says "yes" the rest of the show factually states that isn't the case and it's crazy government experiments while mulder's delirious thoughts play out in front of him.

i'm not memeing, go back and watch those first few seasons, mulder and scully's perspectives are played with so hard and nothing is by accident. the kids in the train car are all regular children, mutated by experiments into looking like aliens. the crazy terminator guy and the plant people are genetically modified organisms. there's a reason scully is never around to see the crazy shit mulder witnesses (or thinks he witnesses).
