A completely and utterly forgotten film, Suriyothai (2001) depicts the 16th century ruined Kingdom of Ayutthaya, which later became Siam. During this period, there were 2 city states that encompassed Siam (Ayutthaya and Pitsanulok). This film takes place over a score of years where the Kingdom saw many invasions from the neighboring Honsawadee (Ancient Burma), lots of political drama, Kings dying, child kings being executed, poisonings, cousins marrying each other, all out war, espionage, etc.

Featuring full scale 'lived in' outdoor sets (which still exist in Thailand today in abandoned form), temples, throne rooms, palaces, and massive scenes with thousands of extras on camera in a scale not seen since Lawrence of Arabia, this film shits on any historical film made by Hollywood. The film notably features the ancient 'royal language' of Thailand, so its hard even for Thai people to understand. It was supported by the Thai royal crown, and directed by one of their princes who went to film school with Francis Ford Coppola, so the actual budget of the film is still unknown to this day.

The link below features both the Thai edition (5 hours long), and Francis Ford Coppola's edit. Watch the Coppola edit if you prefer something faster paced. Watch the 5 hour edit for an increased number of characters, longer royal rituals, less narration and exposition, a brighter color grade and more kino.

If you like the film, spread it around so it can finally be brought to 4k as it deserves. If you watch it for anything, watch it so you can appreciate a dead, exotically beautiful and nearly forgotten culture (even by its own country).

>Gladiator
>Kingdom of Heaven
lol lmao. This film shits all over them, giving out straight history with no B.S.

Subtitles on the 5 hour version are a little botched.

In comparison to what?
What is bland about a completely foreign culture that is mostly forgotten about in the 21st century?

>Suriyothai
Girlboss movie and about a historical girlboss. Wonder how much they've made shit up to prop her up even more.
>>
>>214539411
The film is barely about Suriyothai. It’s not a girlboss film. She is basically has no agency and has to do what the other kings tell her to. This is 16th century Southeast Asia, not America dipshit. As well as this, the other scheming queen is executed. Other queens are executed. No woman in this film is more powerful than a king.

I'm talking about the stills you picked for your collage, not the culture itself. doesn't look like an interesting film to me
>>
>>214539571
Okay…. Sorry the cinegrid disappointed you. It’s 6 stills from a 5 hour long film. I agree though if you don’t like slow rituals and political drama from the 16th century Asia it’s not for you.

It's cheaper to exploit elephant labor than 3-d animate them in Thailand
>>
>>214541141
Thailand was using elephants for mass labor until the 1980s, and were the first country to make elephant kino real

Did you watch the whole film.
>>
>>214541445
Nope. I just skip to battle scenes, because that's the only thing history movies are good for. Modern artists usually cannot comprehend the medieval mind.

>Modern artists usually cannot comprehend the medieval mind.
True, but the film was essentially made by the Thai King and his royal family. So they had to present it accordingly. It's very rigid, and culture-y.

You should watch the entire film.

For me its when the Burma King shows up in golden armor that mogs even excalibur

This was literally the most expensive movie from Thailand until 2013
>>
>>214542405
So it cost what- three fiddy in US dollars?
>>
>>214542426
>>214542405
the actual cost of the film is unknown, but astronomically high. they enlisted 20,000 soldiers to be the extras and to build the sets which were full scale and had fully build internal.

Found this old article saying it cost "more than $20m" and had a marketing budget of $5.6m, so at least $25.6m in total

The Last Samurai came out 2 years later, made on 6x more budget and looks worse. But I digress. Like I said, the film was supported by the Thai king, several princes and princesses were involved, so likely the true budget is unknown. Cheap labor really helps. Lack of CGI. They used traditional composite shots and matte paintings.

It's worth noting that from the 16th-18th century up until it was destroyed Ayutthaya was one of the world's most populous and richest cities with an estimated population of 700,000-1.5 million people when it became a mass center of trade between India, Europe and China.

When was the last time the west made a historical film this good? Have they lost the ability?
>>
A picture of trannime feet is on page 1 but this kino is on page 9
>>
>>214543856
I'm not convinced it's good yet. I'm 40 minutes in and there's a hell of a lot more telling than showing going on. A very dramatically static film thus far. Hopefully it gets better as the action ramps up, and hope it doesn't take 3 hours to get there.
>>
>>214545288
There’s at least 8 battle scenes and they are quite epic and fun in the traditional grand scale. You’ll see.
What version are you watching?
>>
>>214545372
5 hour version of course. I won't tolerate a butchered cut made without the original director.
>>
>>214545459
good call. I really prefer the color grading on the thai version too, it's much more colorful. The other cut has better sound and it's a little higher resolution too. a 1080p BD of a 480p transfer.
