They made very pretty films but none that are very memorable. Most of the good media that came from communism were television shows, not films.

Konrad Wolf, Konrad Petzold, Egon Günther did a couple of decent dramas but nothing worth of mention.
Wolf is only remembered because his brother was the director of the fucking STASI.

Honestly it's embarrassing how Poland is a hundred times better in cinema than both Germanies together.

Ernst Thalmann the son of his class is their most notable film. It details the life of the head of the communist party of Germany during the Sparticist uprising and during his impirsonment in Buchenwald.

Ernst Thalmann was to DDR what George washington is in the states. It was mandated all school age kids would see this film.

The lead actor was actually in the Nazi army however. He was a parachutist at D day.
